After a two-year wait, I finally received comedian Raymond Griffith's military
service record from the U.S. National Military Records Center. It had a
surprise on it in that he gave his birthdate to the Navy as January 23, 1892.
Since his birthday was really in 1895, and he joined the Navy on January 17,
1910, this means that he had not quite turned 15 when he enlisted! He served
from 1910 until the middle of 1912, on five different ships. His service record
does not show him being drafted by the Navy during World War I, as an article in
GRIFFITHIANA claimed.
