These are last week's results. I won't be posting the current results
because my VCR didn't tape them (probably due to user error) while I
was watching Halloween Havoc at Chez Onder.
Popularity rankings for the week ending October 20, 1991:
Heels Faces
----- -----
1 - Cien Caras 1 - Atlantis
2 - Pierroth, Jr. 2 - Octagon
3 - Javier Cruz 3 - Conan
4 - Mascara An~o 2000 4 - Vampiro Canadiense (Casanova)
5 - Fuerza Guerrera 5 - El Rayo de Jalisco, Jr.
News: Not much to report. They ran a strange skit showing Octagon
meeting some Japanese masked man in a Japanese garden. Octagon explains
that this individual is the "ultimate Octagon," but I was unable to
detect the guy's name, even after I re-ran the tape several times. It
was NOT Jushin Liger. I guess this is somebody who will be appearing in
CMLL rings shortly, but given the history of CMLL taped skits, don't
bet on it (for example, where are The Animals?).
NEW WRESTLERS:
MOGUR: A face of no particular note. I can't find a meaning for "Mogur"
in any of my Spanish language dictionaries, so all I can tell you is
that he's fairly young, doesn't wear a mask, and doesn't do much. He's
been around for awhile, but this was his first televised appearance in
some time.
Results from Arena Mexico, Mexico City, D.F.:
FIRST MATCH:
Vulcano, Tony Arce, and Bestia Salvaje (heels) vs. Ciclon Ramirez, El
Pantera, and Aguila Solitaria (faces); Gato Montini and El Gran Davis
(referees); faces win 2/3 falls.
First Fall: Pantera opens against the Savage Beast. After lots of
unremarkable mat work, Pantera arm drags Bestia out of the ring. Ciclon
tags in and first surfboards, then throws Vulcano. Vulcano works on
Ciclon's left leg for awhile to no result. The Lone Eagle tags in and
engages in some fast exchanges with Tony Arce - again, to no result.
Pantera enters to a Bestia Salvage drop kick, then both miss several
drop kicks and leave. After several equally boring exchanges between
various men, Bestia Salvalje drop kicks Pantera from the top turnbuckle
and pins him.
Second Fall: Pantera opens against Tony Arce and throws him out of the
ring. Ciclon tags in and does the same to Bestia Salvaje. Pantera pins
Tony Arce with a Frankensteiner.
Third Fall: 3 on 3 chaos to the advantage of the faces. After
widespread plancha mania, Ciclon pins Bestia Salvaje in under a minute
with a Frankensteiner.
SECOND MATCH:
Fuerza Guerrera, Angel Blanco, Jr., and El Egipcio (heels) vs. Mogur,
Mano Negra, and El Dandy (faces); Roberto Rangel and Gato Montini
(referees), heels win 2/3 falls.
First Fall: Mogur throws Angel Blanco twice then head scissor throws
him out of the ring. Dandy is ganged up on by Egipcio and Fuerza
Guerrera. All 3 rudos gang up on the tecnicos, but after some more
chaos all three faces pin all three heels.
Second Fall: Egipcio and Dandy quickly trade throws and then exit.
After some indiscriminate and unremarkable work from both sides, Angel
Blanco pins El Dandy.
Third Fall: Complete and total chaos both inside and outside the ring.
Too much action to call. Fuerza Guerrera pins El Dandy.
THIRD MATCH:
Black Magic, Ringo Mendoza, and Super Astro (faces) vs. Jerry Estrada,
MS-1, and Masakre (heels); Gato Montini and Pancho Ramirez (referees),
faces win 2/3 falls.
First Fall: Jerry Estrada and Black Magic engage in several tests of
strength, all of which are won by Black Magic. Eventually, Estrada
gives up and leaves. MS-1 tags in to take on Super Astro, who does
several very clever reversals, fakes MS-1 out of the ring, and then
executes one of his patented fake plancha dives. Black Magic
clotheslines Estrada and throws him out of the ring. Ringo superkicks,
suplexes, and pins Masakre.
Second Fall: MS-1 opens against Ringo, who quickly gives way to Super
Astro. Super Astro takes on all three heels at once, going into his
combination dancing-bull fighting act, then flooring Jerry Estrada with
a hard left hook. After a 3 on 3 gangup by the rudos, Super Astro
submits to MS-1's sharpshooter.
Third Fall: The rudos gang up on Ringo, then Black Magic. Super Astro
throws Jerry Estrada out of the ring, then does an over the top rope
plancha. Black Magic gets Masakre to submit to a bear hug.
FOURTH MATCH:
Fabuloso Blondy, Nitron, Pierroth, Jr., (heels) vs. Mascara Sagrada,
Atlantis, and Vampiro Canadiense (faces); Roberto Rangel and Gato
Montini (referees); faces win 2/3 falls.
First Fall: El Vampiro clotheslines and tackles Blondy. Pierroth slugs
Atlantis, then Irish whips him into a corner. Atlantis counters with a
drop kick from the top rope. Nitron enters and flattens Mascara
Sagrada. He recovers to punch Nitron, but then is slammed hard to the
mat. Recovering once again, Mascara Sagrada drop kicks the mighty
Nitron. Blondy comes in to slug El Vampiro, who returns the favor and
then clobbers Nitron as well. Vampiro posts Nitron on the arena floor
while Atlantis is pinning Pierroth.
Second Fall: Vampiro knocks Nitron to the mat, then chases him from the
ring. Pierroth whacks Atlantis, then drags him to the heel corner for
more punishment. Blondy clotheslines Mascara Sagrada out of the ring.
El Vampiro is jumped by all three rudos, and Atlantis submits to
Pierroth's half crab.
Third Fall: Pierroth and Blondy work on Atlantis' mask while Nitro
posts El Vampiro. Pierroth unlaces Mascara Sagrada's mask while Blondy
and Nitron boot the Sacred Mask over and over again. Blondy and
Atlantis trade punches, but as Blondy attempts a body slam, Atlantis
rolls him up into a small package for the pin.

FIRST MATCH: Comando Ruso, Sultan Gargola, and Canelo Casas (heels) vs.
El Felino, El Justiciero, and Ciclon Ramirez (faces); El Gran Davis and
Pancho Ramirez (referees); faces win 2/3 falls; ***
First Fall: Felino opens by pushing Comando Ruso to the canvas twice.
Gargola and Justiciero trade arm drag takedowns. Justiciero hip tosses
Gargola who uses a rolling arm drag takedown on Justiciero in return.
Ciclon and Canelo Casas trade takedowns, then Ciclon goes to work on
Casas' leg Arn Anderson-style. Comando Ruso clotheslines Felino who
retaliates with two straight flying head scissors takedowns. Justiciero
throws Gargola out of the ring, then fakes a suicide plancha. Felino
pins Canelo Casas with a Gotch suplex.
Second Fall: Gargola kicks Justiciero to the mat several times. Ruso
clotheslines Ciclon. Ciclon uses a top turnbuckle knuckle lock throw to
take Ruso down. Canelo misses a flying kick attempt on Ciclon and
emasculates himself on the post. Gargola gets Justiciero to submit
quickly while the other rudos trash the faces all over the arena.
Third Fall: Opens with a 3-on-3 rudo rout. Canelo unlaces and tries to
unmask Ciclon. Suddenly, Justiciero recovers and cleans out the ring.
Ciclon kicks Canelo Casas through the ropes. Justiciero executes a
plancha against Gargola, but Canelo Casas removes Ciclon's mask,
resulting in an immediate disqualification.
SECOND MATCH: Los Brazos (heels) vs. Kato Kung Lee, Volador, and Super
Astro (faces); Gran Davis and Roberto Rangel (referees); heels win 2/3
falls; *** 1/2
First Fall: Los Brazos Pearl Harbor the faces before the ringside
announcements can be made. Brazo de Plata, el Super Porky, just sits
down hard on Super Astro's chest for the pin in under 1 1/2 minutes.
Second Fall: The 3 Brazos open in succession against Kato Kung Lee, but
the Panamanian martial artist reverses the trend against Super Porky.
Volador presses the advantage against Brazo de Oro. Kato takes on Brazo
de Plata, then El Brazo to good effect. Brazo clowns around with a
pseudo-Sumo opening, so Kato Kung Lee kicks him twice in the back of
the head with crescent kicks. Los Brazos go into their comedy routine
at this point with Super Astro setting up all the moves.
As always, the end result is Brazo de Plata doing a 747 on his brothers
"accidentally" as Super Astro moves out of the way, always just at the
last possible moment. Kato Kung Lee does some more comedy with the
Alvarado brothers, doing a limited edition of his patented rope run,
and setting up a Volador sneak-in to clobber and pin Brazo de Oro.
Third Fall: Super Astro uses his incredible acrobatic moves to throw
Brazo de Oro all over the place. Super Porky comes in and throws Super
Astro out of the ring. Volador throws Brazo all over the ring. Finally,
while his brothers hold Super Astro prone, Super Porky executes a 747
splash from the corner turnbuckle and pins the little guy.
THIRD MATCH: Kung Fu, Universo 2000, and Mascara An~o 2000 (heels) vs.
Atlantis, El Rayo de Jalisco, Jr., and Lizmark (faces); El Gran Davis
and Roberto Rangel (referees); faces win 2/3 falls, *****
Any match with Atlantis and Kung Fu is bound to be great, and this was
one of the best. Los Hermanos Reyes (the 2000 masked guys minus
Carmelo) are also a treat. Sean Ryan once wrote here that the Mexican
fans usually sit on their hands because they see everything that can be
seen in the ring night after night - normally a correct observation.
Well, not tonight! *Lots* of heat.
First Fall: Opens with a sneak attack from the heels. Kung Fu holds El
Rayo so Mascara An~o 2000 can beat the snot out of him. After this, all
3 rudos gang up on Atlantis. El Rayo comes in to try to even the odds,
but they all gang up on *him* and he submits to the Reyes brothers in
center ring while Kung Fu kicks the Hell out of Atlantis on the arena
floor.
Second Fall: Complete and utter chaos. El Rayo beats the crap out of
the Reyes brothers in the ring and Atlantis picks up Kung Fu and posts
his back *hard*. Atlantis pins Universo 2000 as El Rayo and Lizmark
make mincemeat of Mascara An~o 2000.
Third Fall: Kung Fu fouls Atlantis twice with hard low blows, but
neither referee sees it :-). El Rayo beats the living crap out of
Mascara An~o 2000, but as he goes for the submission, Kung Fu and
Universo 2000 break it up.
Atlantis is pounding the daylights out of Kung Fu and taking away all
his little goodies ("International" objects) and using them against
him. First, he rifles through Kung Fu's gi and finds his vial of fluid
used to blind his opponents (OK, so it's only water, but the marks
don't know that). Atlantis opens the vial and squirts the entire
contents into Kung Fu's eyes. Next he pulls the garrote cord out of
Kung Fu's sleeve and chokes the tears out of the evil little cheat :-).
As heel referee Gran Davis pulls Atlantis off Kung Fu, the rudo knees
Atlantis in the balls, but it isn't called.
Atlantis quickly recovers and kicks the crap out of Kung Fu. Meanwhile,
El Rayo is getting Mascara An~o 2000 to submit in the center of the
ring and Lizmark is trashing Universo 2000. Atlantis continues to mop
up the arena with Kung Fu in grand style. Best tag match I've seen in
many moons.
FOURTH MATCH: Octagon (face) vs. Fuerza Guerrera (heel); Gran Davis
(referee); Octagon wins 2/3 falls; ***** +
Clearly the best televised singles match since El Faraon's bloodfest
against Pirata Morgan almost a year ago. Great work rates, great heat,
just wonderful, wonderful stuff.
First Fall: As Octagon is climbing through the ropes, he's ambushed
from behind by Kung Fu. Fuerza Guerrera takes quick advantage of the
situation and cleans up the ring with an already trashed Octagon. At
this, Fuerza throws Octagon out of the ring and continues to trash him
out there. Back in the ring, Octagon gets his second wind and delivers
a *very* high back body drop to Fuerza, then drop kicks him and takes
him out of the ring. As Octagon is working on Fuerza Guerrera on the
arena floor, heel referee El Gran Davis grabs him and pulls him off the
little heel, giving the CMLL World's Welterweight champ just the chance
he needs to get a little rest.
Back in the ring, CMLL Mexican National Middleweight champ Octagon
delivers a superkick to Fuerza's head, applies a spinning bear hug (new
move to me), and then pins Fuerza Guerrera in spite of Davis'
agonizingly slow count.
Second Fall: Octagon opens with a hard drop kick and modified power
bomb on Fuerza Guerrera and is warned by Davis about fouling (it
clearly wasn't a foul, but the maneuver was performed in such a way
that everybody in the house *thought* it was going to be a foul). As
Davis is distracting Octagon with his lecture, Fuerza Guerrera clearly
fouls the fan favorite with an obvious kick to the balls (lots of heat
at this point), but the ref doesn't call it.
Fuerza Guerrera ties Octagon to the top rope by his mask streamers and
pounds the daylights out of him. It looks like Fuerza did a little bit
too good a job of knotting the streamers, because Davis is having a
real hard time untying them (not a work). While Davis is unable to
untie the knot, Fuerza Guerrera tauts the crowd.
When the knot is finally untied, Fuerza pulls Octagon over to the
corner post and from the arena floor grabs both of Octagon's legs and
pulls him hard twice, doing everything he can to make a soprano out of
the little ninja. Fuerza Guerrera walks over to Don~a Vicky and trades
barbs, bringing the crowd to its feet.
Octagon magically recovers (-: and executes a cross body block from the
top turnbuckle on Fuerza Guerrera in the ring, then lands a hard
superkick on Fuerza. Unfortunately (-:, Octagon misses a superkick and
hits the corner ring post, allowing Fuerza Guerrera to pin him with a
pretzel hold.
Third Fall: Fuerza Guerrera kicks Octagon out of the ring and follows
him outside, using the vacated seat right next to Don~a Vicky to smash
Octagon's head (not a planned vacancy: Fuerza dragged Octagon over to
the seat and the fan sitting there quickly bailed out). At this point,
Octagon is juicing heavily and not in real good shape.
Back in the ring, Fuerza ties Octagon up in the ropes and bites his
fingers. Octagon then reverses an Irish whip and throws Fuerza through
the ropes into the ring post head first (pretty spectacular maneuver -
at this point, even I'm screaming my brains out like an idiot). Octagon
drags Fuerza over to the (again) vacated seat next to Don~a Vicky and
smashes him into it. By now, Fuerza is juicing pretty heavily as well.
Back in the ring, Octagon tilt-a-whirls Fuerza, who falls face first
through the ropes back to the floor. Back in the ring, Octagon posts
himself as Fuerza gets out of the way at the last moment. Fuerza
executes a modified power bomb on Octagon and climbs to the top
turnbuckle for a leg drop. Incredibly (-:, he misses when Octagon rolls
out of the way. Octagon only gets a 2-count on the prone Fuerza,
though, due to the again agonizingly slow count from Davis.
There are several spectacular near pins from both men at this point,
and Fuerza somehow just manages to escape from a camel clutch. Octagon
kicks Fuerza through the ropes and then does a spectacular, over the
top rope suicide plancha dive way up the aisle. Both men, clearly
legitimately exhausted, use this as an opportunity to catch their
breath.
Both masks are pretty ripped up by this time, and both men are bathed
in crimson, looking very different from their appearance at the match's
onset.
Back in the ring, Octagon nearly gains a submission from Fuerza, who in
turn just misses a back drop plancha from the top turnbuckle. Again,
Octagon narrowly misses the pin. Octagon goes to the top and misses a
747 plancha when Fuerza rolls out of the way just at the last possible
moment. Fuerza applies a back breaker on the exhausted Octagon, but the
wily ninja reverses it and rolls Fuerza up for another pin attempt,
again just missing the 3-count.
Fuerza Guerrera *finally* submits to a highly modified arm bar after
Octagon threw him from the top rope in a botched plancha attempt. The
ring and both wrestlers are covered with blood, and both are clearly
exhausted.
Both are justly cheered by the fans for their efforts. A truly great
match.

I agree. I only got to see the singles matchup all the way through,
but it was the haute cuisine of wrestling fare.

Lots of juice. Lots of heat. Excellent workrate.

That was fun. She started kicking him at one point, and he looked all
innocent, like "hey, what's the problem? I'm just bashing this guy's
head in!"

I think this is where Dave and I see things a bit differently. I
think the blades were hidden under the chair, and when Octagon gets
tossed under the seat, he blades himself. When he gets into the ring,
he's juicing heavily. The same happens with Fuerza later.
I think the chair bit was a work. That promoter guy comes up and gets
our attention each time; the next thing we know, the guy under the
chair is juicing.

Uh huh... :)

I was most impressed by how quickly the ring mat turned from blue to
red. Amazing. :)

Yep.
