I don't have any insider information, but I suspect you're correct --
they're probably just made up. It's really hard to tell because all the
"hijos" I know of are masked, as were their "padres." Kind of hard to
see facial resemblances. :-)

This situation is entirely different from the "Jr." wrestlers, who
don't claim to be related to the originals. The juniors just use the
same names as the originals.

News for the week:

Pierroth, Jr. did a video "interview" where he talked about his
upcoming match for the CMLL Mexican National Lightheavyweight
Championship with champ Mascara Sagrada (apparently it's a mask vs.
mask match). Pierroth does a really good heel (better than any other
Mexican wrestler IMHO), and spent the last part of the piece telling
the camera how he was going to plant Mascara Sagrada right in the
second row of the arena (seat 13) and that he's the best wrestler in
Mexico. He then exited laughing maniacally.

A really nice looking red haired woman named Gloria Mayo then came on
and talked about how she was training with Misterioso and a Japanese
man whose name I didn't catch. My Spanish wasn't good enough to follow
much of anything she was saying (I guess the visual distraction didn't
help (-:), but I got the impression she was at least new to CMLL rings.
Does anybody know anything about her? She might be the woman I
mentioned several weeks ago who was holding the UWA women's
championship belt.

They showed an old black and white tape from Coliseo de Monterrey,
August 13, 1966 with the original Solitario (Roberto Gonzalez Cruz)
and Marco Tulio teaming against Polo Torres and El Rebelde (Chu Chu
Garcia). Regarding a question from Maurice Forrester, I'll have to
revise my opinion on whether all these "Hijos" are really sons of the
originals or not. El Solitario and Hijo del Solitario have virtually
identical bodies. Additionally, the announcers said that El Rebelde
(not a masked wrestler) was the father of current masked wrestler Mano
Negra. There does seem to be a number of these father-son things that
are legitimate (Gory Guerrero and his four sons, for example). So
Maurice, I really don't know. Maybe they are; maybe they aren't.

New wrestlers:

AGUILA SOLITARIA (Lone Eagle) is an excellent masked face. Good worker,
good moves. Always interesting.

JAQUE MATE (Checkmate), a masked heel, has always been a favorite of
mine, but I'm not sure why. He's not an acrobat, and not the hardest
worker in CMLL rings, but he works the crowd really well and he's
always interesting to watch.

CESAR DANTES is the brother of another baby face, Apolo Dantes. They
look and wrestle very much alike. Sort of smaller versions of Jim
Powers.

Popularity ratings for the week ending October 13, 1991:

Heels Faces
----- -----

1 - Cien Caras 1 - Octagon
2 - Fuerza Guerrera 2 - Atlantis
3 - Mascara An~o 2000 3 - Conan
4 - Pierroth, Jr. 4 - Vampiro Canadiense (Casanova)
5 - Javier Cruz 5 - El Rayo de Jalisco, Jr.

Final news note: It looks like Eddy Guerrero may be making a heel turn.
Stay tuned for further developments.

MATCH 1: Ponzon~a, El Espectro, Jr., and El Espectro de Ultratumba
(heels) vs. Aguila Solitaria, El Pantera, and Ciclon Ramirez (faces);

Gato Montini and Pancho Ramirez (referees); faces win 2/3 falls.

First Fall: Ponzon~a throws Ciclon, then gets the same treatment in
return. Ciclon manages to put Ponzon~a into a surfboard, but Los
Espectros come in to break it up. There's lots of mat work for awhile,
then Los Espectros gang up on Pantera - first on the floor, then in the
ring. El Espectro pounds on Pantera in the heel corner for a bit, then
all 3 rudos gang up on the tecnicos. Finally, Ponzon~a pins Aguila
Solitaria.

Second Fall: All three rudos come in and trash first Aguila and then
Ciclon. Ciclon is mangled first by Ponzon~a, then by Ultratumba. Ciclon
tilt-a-whirls Ultratumba. Ciclon throws El Espectro out of the ring,
then does a WOWEE! suicide plancha over the top rope. Aguila Solitaria
holds El Espectro on his shoulders while Pantera and Ciclon climb to
adjacent top turnbuckles. Both then simultaneously drop kick El
Espectro in the head, and he's covered by Aguila for the pin.

Third Fall: Pantera catapults El Espectro. Aguila Solitaria comes in
and is trashed by all 3 rudos. As Ultratumba climbs to the top rope to
execute a plancha, he is surprised by a drop kick from behind and
hammered to the arena floor by Aguila Solitaria. (At this point there
were so many crazy plancha dives going on, I couldn't write them all
down). Ciclon suicide planchas Ultratumba through the ropes, then
Pantera does an over the top rope front flip plancha onto all 3 rudos
on the arena floor. Ciclon pins El Espectro for the victory.

SECOND MATCH: Canelo Casas and Archangel de la Muerte (heels) vs.
Talisman and Guerrero Samuray (faces); Pancho Ramirez and Gato Montini
(referees); heels win 2/3 falls.

This was a rematch from last week's card. These fours guys put on a
really good show.

First Fall: Talisman and Archangel open with lots of heat, and are soon
joined by their respective partners. Finally, it's back to Talisman and
Archangel again, and lots of well executed mat work. Canelo Casas and
the Samurai Warrior trades many throws and also do lots of mat work --
so much that the fans begin to get impatient and start whistling
derisively. Archangel and Talisman come in and do lots of rope razzle
dazzle stuff. The Samurai Warrior does a double throw of Canelo and
Archangel followed by some more fancy flips. Talisman tilt-a-whirls
Archangel, then pins him.

Second Fall: Canelo Casas clotheslines Talisman, then superkicks him.
For his part, Talisman tilt-a-whirls Canelo. Canelo superkicks Talisman
hard in the face. Archangel comes in to arm wring Talisman. Then, as
Canelo holds Talisman's arm in the wringing maneuver, Archangel twice
does a double ax handle from the top rope on the arm. Archangel gives
Guerrero Samuray a very high back body drop, throws him, and then pins
him.

Third Fall: Archangel and Canelo gang up on the Samurai Warrior, then
there is 2-on-2 chaos for awhile. Talisman tilt-a-whirls Canelo, but
the two rudos gang up on Guerrero Samuray and pin him for the victory.

THIRD MATCH: Fuerza Guerrera, Jaque Mate, and Supremo I (heels) vs.
Cesar Dantes, Apolo Dantes, and Eddy Guerrero (faces); Roberto Rangel
and Pancho Ramirez (referees); heels win 2/3 falls.

First Fall: Supremo and Cesar open with a lot of mat work to nobody's
advantage. Jaque Mate and Apolo follow up with more of the same. Eddy
and Fuerza come in and immediately begin doing a school yard bully
chest shoving routine. Fuerza starts it off, and Eddy returns it by
flattening the much smaller Fuerza. At this point, all 3 rudos come in
and mop up the arena with the tecnicos. In a reversal, Cesar catapults
Supremo out of the ring.

The Dantes brothers gang up on Fuerza Guerrera and catapult him high
and far across the ring. Cesar lifts Jaque Mate into a half suplex
(image Koko B. Ware balancing a jobber just before a ghost buster), and
Apolo executes a high cross body block off the second rope to pin the
masked villain.

Second Fall: Supremo and Cesar trade tosses and kicks. Apolo throws
Fuerza out of the ring. Eddy comes in to face Jaque Mate, who flexes
for the crowd Lex Luger style (boos all around). They then go into a
"test of strength" top knuckle lock. Jaque Mate takes Eddy to the mat
with this move (no screw job). Eddy then throws JM twice, but is
clotheslined in return. Eddy does a plancha throw on JM, whipping him
out of the ring.

Apolo throws Supremo out of the ring. Cesar comes in and twice
catapults Fuerza Guerrera in razzle dazzle moves. Apolo is dragged into
the heel corner by JM and trashed. JM takes on Apolo in center ring and
flattens him. He and Fuerza then gang up on Eddy. Fuerza Guerrera and
Eddy brawl on the arena floor while Jaque Mate and Cesar fight in the
ring. Supremo suplexes and pins Apolo Dantes.

Third Fall: Fuerza Guerrera slugs Eddy to the mat, then drags him to
the rudo corner for a mugging. Eddy takes the advantage on Fuerza,
slugging him to the mat. Apolo tilt-a-whirls Fuerza and then Cesar
catapults the diminutive villain. Eddy belly-to-belly suplexes Fuerza,
but is accidentally drop kicked by Cesar. Apolo then accidentally drop
kicks Eddy from the top rope, and Eddy is pinned by the rudos.

After the rudos leave the ring, Eddy jumps the Dantes brothers and
pretty much mops up the ring with them. The crowd watches in stunned
silence (remember, even though they're norteamericanos, the Guerreros
are to Mexican wrestling what the Von Erichs are to Texas wrestling -
daddy Gory is a national hero, and the four brothers are really over
down there).

A heel turn for Eddy Guerrero? Who knows? Even the announcers were
speculating on the question. Stay tuned for further developments...

Bien venidos
