NWA Popularity Ratings for week ending 7/28/91:
1. Vampiro Canadiense (North American face)
2. Conan (Cuban-American face)
3. Atlantis (masked face)
4. Lizmark (masked face)
5. Cien Caras (heel)
6. Octagon (masked face)
7. El Rayo de Jalisco (masked face)
8. Mascara An~o 2000 (masked heel)
9. Hijo de ? (masked ?)
10. Kato Kung Lee (Panamanian face)
COMMENT: Two weeks in a row for the Canadian Vampire. Octagon has
dropped, probably because he hasn't been seen much over the past month.
An injury, perhaps? Biggest surprise to me is the appearance of El Hijo
de ?, someone I have never seen, nor heard of. I have no idea who this
guy is, what his angles are...nothing.
RESULTS:
Match 1: El Espectrito, Jr., Piratita Morgan, and Jerrito Estrada
(heels) def. Octagoncito, Aguilita Solitaria, and Mascarita Sagrada
(faces) in straight falls in midget tag team action.
Referees: El Gran Davis, Mini Davis (midget).
Match 2: Emilio Charles, Jr., El Gran Sheik, and Javier Cruz defeated
Blue Demon, Jr., Mano Negra, and Apolo Dantes, 2/3 falls.
In the first fall, Emilio Charles forced Blue Demon to submit to an
unnamed pretzel hold and the Sheik pinned Mano Negra; meanwhile, Apolo
Dantes brawled with Javier Cruz (to no avail) on the arena floor.
In the second fall, Cruz and Dantes generated a lot of heat, with
Dantes tossing Cruz around pretty good. In short order, Apolo Dantes
pinned Javier Cruz with a very nicely executed Karl Gotch suplex.
The final fall began to loud crowd noise (rare in Mexico), with Cruz
smashing Dantes, and Dantes coming back with a tilt-a-whirl back
breaker followed by a nasty clothes line. Dantes then executed another
Gotch suplex, but the pin was broken up by outside interference from
the Sheik. He tried once again, but both Sheik and Charles kicked him
off. Finally, while the other participants were brawling on the arena
floor, and while the camera was away from the ring, Cruz pinned Dantes.
Bad guys win, 2/3 falls.
Referees: Gato Montini, Roberto Rangel
Match 3: Los Brazos (Brazo de Oro, Brazo de Plata, Brazo -- heels)
defeated the Guerrero brothers (Eddy, Chavo, Mando -- faces) 2/3
falls.
The first fall ended with Mando drop kicking Brazo de Plata from the
corner turnbuckle, then pinning him. Meanwhile, the other Guerreros
pinned the other Brazos.
The second fall began with El Brazo and Mando exchanging slaps in the
center of the ring. Soon all six brothers were in the ring,
simultaneously raising Hell and trying to calm one another down. Lots
of heat, no work. The fall ended with Brazo de Oro pinning Mando, and
Brazo de Plata executing a plancha on Chavo from the corner turn
buckle.
The third fall began with the Guerreros all ganging up on Brazo de
Plata. There were two near pins of the Brazos (all 3) by the Guerreros
(all 3), but both were broken up at the last moment. After some more
hot action, Mando threw Brazo to the arena floor, then, running full
speed, lept onto the top rope and threw himself headfirst onto Brazo on
the arena floor (we're talking a MAJOR plancha, here). In quick
succession the Brazos and Guerreros traded headfirst dives between the
top and middle ropes onto the arena floor. Once everybody but Brazo de
Plata was gathered together in a heap on the arena floor, it was
Plata's turn to shine. A large, fat man, he climbed to the top
turnbuckle and planchaed head first into the lot of the Guerreros and
Brazos. Finally, Plata pinned Chavo cleanly in the center of the ring
after Chavo missed a sunset flip off the top rope. As the match winds
down, the crowd shouts, Porky! Porky! Porky! Porky!
Referees: Roberto Rangel, El Gran Davis
Match 4: Los Hermanos Dinamitas (Universo 2000, Mascara An~o 2000, Cien
Caras -- heels) lost to Conan, Anibal, and Pirata Morgan (faces), 2/3
falls.
In the first fall, the heels all ganged up on Conan and kicked him
senseless. After all 3 faces were brutally beaten (smile) on the arena
floor, Universo 2000 pinned Pirata Morgan cleanly in the center of the
ring.
Second fall: Conan again takes a beating. Anibal enters the ring
against all 3 heels and begins whailing on them all. The Dynamite
Brothers begin missing drop kicks, clotheslines, etc. and smacking one
another, usually winding up being tossed over the top rope to the arena
floor. Finally, Conan superplexes Universo 2000 for the pin.
In the third fall, Conan showed a flair for acrobatics that I haven't
seen from him previously. The most interesting move was when he had a
Greco-Roman knuckle lock on Universo 2000, leapt from a standing start
to the middle rope, then from there to the top rope, then off into the
center of the ring, flipping Universo over his head as he did so. Then
he did it again! After several miscues by the heels, the faces won the
final fall when Cien Caras kicked Conan below the belt. The heels were
disqualified immediately.
Referees: Roberto Rangel, El Gran Davis
Match 5: Septiembre Negro and anonymous (heels) vs. El Felino and El
Justiciero (faces)
I was out of the room when the wrestlers were announced, and I'd never
seen the anonymous masked heel before, so I don't know what to call
him.
First fall: Septiembre Negro put a Boston crab on El Justiciero.
Second fall: The heels put a double submission hold on the faces. Two
straight falls.
Notes on previously unmentioned luchadores:
El Hijo de ? is a complete unknown to me. I don't even know if he's a
face or a heel.
Emilio Charles, Jr. (it's pronounced CHARless) is your basic thug heel.
Tough guy, but unspectacular.
El Gran Sheik (The Great Sheik) is a very minor masked heel. Nothing
remarkable.
Blue Demon, Jr. is a brand new masked face, said by the announcers to
be the son of the original Blue Demon (smile). I'm dubious, but this
guy looks good. Good heat, good work rate, quite acrobatic...looks like
a comer.
Los Brazos are the Alvarado brothers, El Brazo ("the arm" - Juan
Alvarado), Brazo de Oro ("golden arm" - Chucho Alvarado), and Brazo de
Plata ("silver arm" aka "Super Porky" - Pepe Alvarado. These guys
remind me of Arn Anderson...nothing spectacular, but real hard workers,
good fundamentalists (not like Tully Blanchard). Brazo de Plata, in
particular, is a big fan favorite in spite of nominally being a heel.
He's very fat, with a huge pot belly, and he's quite humorous in the
ring. Additionally, he's the most agile fat slob I've ever seen (I'm
exclusing the likes of Bam Bam Bigelow, who transcends being a fat
slob, and P.N. News, who transcends being a human being). Oftentimes
they play the old Warner Bros. Looney Tunes theme over the arena P.A.
system when he comes to the ring. Note that Brazo de Oro and Brazo de
Plata are the UWA (rival Mexican federation) tag team champions. Brazo
de Oro wears golden tights and a gold band on his arm; Brazo de Plata
wears silver tights and a silver band on his arm; El Br
Conan is the Mexican (really Cuban-American) Ultimate Warrior with one
BIG difference -- he can wrestle! He's an obvious roider (besides his
build, his back is covered with acne -- a sure sign), but a truly
outstanding wrestler. Combines strength, agility, and acrobatics with
great heat and work rates -- he could easily be a star in the US. In
fact, he DID wrestle here earlier in the year (or was it late last
year?) both in WCW and in the WWF, wearing a mask in both federations.
He since unmasked himself -- real name Carlos Santiago Espata.
According to the Galavision announcers, he's from the Miami, Florida
area. Does anybody out there know if this is legit?
Pirata Morgan (Morgan the Pirate) is a long-time heel who made a face
turn about two months ago. The heat is always high when he's in the
ring, and he's very, very tough. About 5 months ago he and El Faraon
wrestled the bloodiest match I've ever seen on TV. At one point, El
Pirata bit into Faraon's already juiced forehead, sucked up a mouthful,
and spat it into the kleig lights. An awesome (if tasteless) sight.
Faraon eventually won the match when Pirata was so bloodied, he
couldn't continue. His gimmick (besides wearing Pirate garb to the
ring) is wearing an eye patch over his right eye. How it stays on, I
don't know (glue?), but it's always attached.
Septiembre Negro (Black September) is a minor masked heel. Apparently
the name comes from the Palestinian terrorist group...remember the guys
at the Munich Olympics in 1972?
El Justiciero (difficult to translate -- "Justice" will do) is a minor
masked face. A pretty good worker, he just doesn't appear often enough
to develop a following.
El Felino (The Feline) is a minor masked face with the ratiest looking
ring attire I've ever seen. The mask looks like a very cheap children's
Halloween mask, complete with cheesy whiskers and the awfulest, dirty
brown "fur" you can imagine. The rest of the outfit matches. Anyway,
he's quite good in spite of his outfit, given to Jushin Riger-like
front flips off the top turnbuckle onto his opponent on the arena
floor. Good heat, good work rate...he'd be a real star if he didn't
have such a crappy looking costume.

Wow, and I always thought acne on the back could be a natural
thing. I guess now, whenever I see someone that has a good build
and acne on their back, I can also assume they are serious 'roiders.
Get a grip...
BTW, thanks for the excellent match report.

Dave,
Please explain to me why this is a safe assumption. In my bigger days,
I was quite cut and had some good mass along with a massive acne prob
on my back. I never roided. I can think of several of my friends with
the same problem, some have *serious* acne some not so *serious*. None
of them use the roids either. I also have a few friends in the drug-free
powerlifting federation with pretty serious acne problems, not always
confined to their backs. So, tell me, how is this a safe assumption?
Roid-o-mania seems to be running wild these days...
It's probably a safe assumption to make, believe it or not. And Conan
has a *serious* case of acne on his back. It's not just a few zits.
And I'm glad to know that somebody finds the lucha reports of interest.
Thanks for the feedback.
Best regards,
Dave

All opinions are mine, only mine, and nothing but mine. Really.
If your acne and theirs is/was so serious that it would be QUITE
visible on a long view of a wrestling ring -- a VERY long view -- then
I will concede the point. Until recently, I just thought the man had
very large freckles on his back. Then I saw a good closeup.
Acne on the back is obviously not a diagnostic, and I'm not contending
it is. It is, however, a common sign of steroid abuse. I have never --
EVER -- seen a back like Conan's. Let me put it this way...I would be
VERY surprised to find that he's NOT a roider.
I doubt anyone else cares any further about this point, so if you want
to continue the discussion, I suggest we do it directly rather than
through the group. Sound OK?
Regards,
