Greetings!
Ok, here's the question......
If'in you could only go to ONE faire this season, on the East coast,
which one would it be?

There is a method to my madness...
our budget is tight this year, (getting married in October :-o ) and
trying to decide which one.

Well, I may be disqualified because I have already been to two this season--VA
and NCRF.

Hard question. From my experience, I would have to say Maryland as
well---although I really like PA.

Well, before I recommend one, I need to ask you what is important to you at a
faire/festival.

Do you need to wear weapons/steel to feel happy?
How important is an accurate joust to you?
Do you want juried crafts?
Do you want a variety of Beer/Mead/Cider/Wine and freedom to carry it anywhere?
In shows, what is more important, music or stage acts, mud show or not, roving
music or general ambience?
Do you like lots of street characters or don't want to be bothered?
Do you prefer more or less historical accuracy?
Tudor or Elizabethan or Medival period?
Do you like to be able to go back to your car during the day?
Do you like sunny sites or lots of trees?

If I think of more I shall let you know. I have been to PA, MD, VA, and CO.
Md is my favorite, I like the shows, the high quality crafts, the music
everywhere, the ability to go back to your car and not have to repay, old
looking weatherbuildings and trees all over.

To me it feels like home, and most do like it alot, but it doesn't allow steel
and others do not like it as well as I do. To each their own.
:-)

Well? What are your preferences?

OK, I'm biased, but the New York Renaissance Faire is the only show on
the east coast where you can see The Flaming Idiots. Nowhere else can
you also see The (original) Mud Show, Brother Donald (storyteller),
Magical Mystical Michael, and the Earthquest falconry show all at one
faire. If you're on a tight budget, visit the website
(www.renfair.com/newyork.htm) for a super discount ticket offer --
$11.50 adult ticket price and FREE tickets if you order 4 or more
(offer valid until June 30.)

The lovely Michele asked:

>>> Do you need to wear weapons/steel to feel happy?

I wouldn't say I need to, but I prefer to (when I'm not
wearing a guitar). I also like the fact that *lots* of
people are armed; it adds greatly to the ambience. But
I can be happy at a faire with no steel.

============================================================

>>> How important is an accurate joust to you?

I *much* prefer an accurate one. I have read a little about
medieval tournaments, and they were *very* entertaining,
exciting contests (also very dangerous -- let's stay safe
out there!). I can enjoy a "silly" joust, but I prefer an
accurate one.

============================================================

>>> Do you want juried crafts?

Yes. Definitely. I like to shop, and cheesy merchandise
is a waste of time.

But. I want the jury to allow a lot of flexibility, so
there's selection for both novice and expert, a lot of
choice for both those on a budget and those who can afford
more. I also like finding things that aren't necessarily
"period," but I won't likely find in other places.

============================================================

>>> Do you want a variety of Beer/Mead/Cider/Wine and
>>> freedom to carry it anywhere?

It's not a big deal to me, since I don't do beer or cider
and only occasionally other stuff (when I am offered single
malt or mead from the Godess, well... mmmmmmmmm). I could
easily enjoy a *dry* faire, and it does have one big
advantage -- no drunken jerks (just a few sober ones).

Generally, though, I prefer a "wet" faire, as most of my
friends would like to enjoy a wee draught. And I think one
of the appeals of those olden times is that despite all the
heirarchy of aristocracy, they had fewer *rules* to live by;
and "no alcohol" was certainly *not* a rule back then!

As for freedom to carry it anywhere, I'm undecided. VA
has alcohol, but restricted to certain areas. It may have
dampened the mood a little, but it may also have made for
a very civilized day. The jury's still out.

============================================================

>>> In shows, what is more important, music or stage acts,
>>> mud show or not, roving music or general ambience?

First let me emphasize: I want "all of the above."

Music is most important to me (but stage acts are close).
I must qualify, that I have my own taste in music, and
unless the group "strikes the right chord" I may listen
only briefly. I guess I'm a tough audience for musicians.
If they do strike the right chord, I may go out of my way
to see *all* their shows -- even to the detriment of my
shopping time.

I love stage shows, especially comedy, and I'm likely to
watch the entire show, and enjoy it all the way through.
I'm an easy audience for comedians -- I love to laugh!

I've never much cared for mud shows -- mildly amusing, but
"if you've seen one..." Still, other folks love 'em --
especially the non-rennie patrons (and we need to take good
care of them!!), so I'd want one at my faire.

I like roving music, but I think I prefer general ambiance.
It often gives me an opportunity to stop, take a break,
relax. The musicians are usually very glad to have a small
"audience," and are very open to chatting, sharing ideas
(and songs), taking requests, and generally sowing the seeds
of friendship; it's a very *personal* experience.

And by God! I want a Shakespeare play!

============================================================

>>> Do you like lots of street characters or don't want
>>> to be bothered?

LOTS!!! I think this is one of the most fun things about
faire. It makes the whole mood so jovial. I like my street
characters comical (most of them, anyway).

============================================================

>>> Do you prefer more or less historical accuracy?

Again, I want it all! I want fairies and elves, *and*
Queen Elizabeth's court -- but I think I want them at
opposite ends of the fairegrounds, or even at different
faires. Perhaps I like my medieval faires fantastical
and my renaissance faires more historical.

A note on historical accuracy: when done well, it's amazing!
But I won't cut you much slack; when done not so well (and
it's all too easy to do it not so well), it's cheesy as
hell. When Queen Elizabeth uses period speech *badly*
(this is the Queen for God's sake! who hired this person?)
and stumbles and halts because she's obviously having
difficulty finding words, it becomes painfully bad. I am
much more forgiving to fantasy characters.

============================================================

>>> Tudor or Elizabethan or Medival period?

Either medieval or Elizabethan. Medieval has more of the
"Knights in armor" mood, more of the spirit of magic and
mystery (wizards and sorcerers don't really fit the
renaissance). And it's *crude* -- which has a certain
appeal.

As for renaissance, it's not that I don't like the Tudor
idea (Henry VIII), but I'd much rather have Elizabeth,
and Shakespeare, Dowland, Galileo, ... The Elizabethan
renaissance has a *refinement* that is rarely matched in
modern life! Yet this refinement is mingled with crudeness,
too -- it makes for a fascinating combination.

============================================================

>>> Do you like to be able to go back to your car during
>>> the day?

Oh yes. Most definitely. Not allowing customers to go to
the car, then reenter, is *really* crude (an not in an
appealing way).

============================================================

>>> Do you like sunny sites or lots of trees?

*Definitely* trees. Lots of trees. In fact, I think I want
a forest (and a castle, and ...). Yes, I'd like some sun
in places, even a nice sunny clearing, but... I want *wood*.

============================================================

>>> Well? What are your preferences?

Now *that* is an interesting question! :-)

============================================================

>>> Forgot one more question, when do you want to go,
>>> what month?

Hmmmm... I have 12 answers for one question...

But seriously, folks, I think autumn, when the leaves are
changing, is the best. September-October, I guess.

============================================================
>>> ... I have been to PA, MD, VA, and CO.

I have been to KRF (Carver), Hammond Castle, NC, AZ, and VA,
looking forward this year to making Sterling, MD, and the
new faire in Maine.

KRF is my favorite (and it does feel like home), for the
good shows, many street actors, wooded fairegrounds, good
shopping. And so many friends!!! There are some things
about KRF I don't like (no re-entry first on the list), but
if you're prepared for the minuses, the pluses are plenty;
there's a good time to be had by all.

Naa..

realism is always fun ;-}

>Do you want juried crafts?

I hate "craft-nazi's", but I have to say I hate to go to booths that
have the same crafts as the next guy, over and over again. Especially
those crafts that look like they were made from kits from the Rag Shop
or Frank's Nursery and Crafts, you know what I mean? ( pardon if I
offend any crafters here, but my opinion was asked :-)

Yippee!

>In shows, what is more important, music or stage acts, mud show or not, roving

Most definitely music is very important to us, it really can carry us
away, and the best times we've had are when there is alot of music.
As far as acts go, we tend to love comedy, but we like to watch any
quality performance.
I have been to acts that felt like I was at a high school play,
y'know? Good acting is always eye candy. That opinion applys for
street performers as well.
Gosh, I hope I'm not insulting anyone....

Doesn't matter

No

Trees! This, believe it or not, is a biggie for us.
I am a whiter shade of pale :-} Also, if it's too hot it tends to zap
us and we don't enjoy ourselves as much.

then I would reccommend a faire nearby. Possibly New York? I'v never

Well, to be honest, since you don't care about having swords, want the cider,
mead, ale, etc to flow freely (and not in a limited area I am assuming), want
lots of ambient music, trees (everywhere BUT the jousting field), good stage
acts, and quality shops that don't look the same from shop to shop, I honestly
HAVE to recommend MD. My only concern is when you would be attending. Your
wedding is in October and I am not sure HOW MUCH free time you will have so
close to the wedding. But if you can make it, it is one of the best. (and you
can see my show there...I apologize for the shameless plug, but I felt it
necessary. ;-) )

If you would like swords and don't need to go back to your car, try KRF. It is
the priciest one on this coast, and that might leave you a little less for
shopping, but it is said to have good street.

I have over the years heard Sterling (WAAAAAYYYYYY Up north) raved about, I am
sure that is worth seeing.

But I still vote for MD. and if you do make it, let me know and I will try to
help you find a way to arrange a discount on the tickets.

VERY !!! I think this is mostly because my first (25) experiences
with the joust were at Ohio with the new riders .. and their show
is/was VERY well done and very accurate (as far as I can tell) I have
been somewhat dissapouinted with the jousts I have seen at other

Yes, however I do understand that in many places it must be consumed

The more street actors the better .. as long as they are not going to

I'm always doing *something* with my hands, so I guess you could call

If an accurate (real actual) joust is what you want, I would this year have you
stay in your own Ohio. The best Jousting co (IMO) is going to be there for the

No they are not, but people who truly appreciate good work are not
afraid to pluck down their money.
I'm sure I'm rehashing an age-old argument on this NG.
I would rather spend alot of money on something handcrafted, than
buying alot of "stuff" made in Tiawan.
As an artist myself, I honor the exchange.
I wonder how many people would go into their doctors office and say,

I wasn't quarreling with the time and skill required for good work so
much as bemoaning my lack of dollars that would make it worthwhilfe
for the craftsman to want to produce for me.

I must say that sterling in oswego is one of the nicest faires I have
been to out of all the faires. The people are friendly, the food is
good, the performers are very good and the atmosphere is jovial and
friendly. It's definitely my favorite faire. Its a bit of a hike even
from NYC (about a 5 hour drive i think) If you do go you absolutely must
see Don Juan and Miguels show, it a riot! They have 3 during the day all
slightly different. And master mario is a trip!!! Oh, don't let him
sucker you into a pillow fight with him, find someone else to fight, I
don't think he has ever been knocked off that damn log! *L* The only
thing that sterling lacks are blade merchants, but at least they aren't
hipcrits where they will sell you blades but not let you carry them on
site like some other faires. (please no flames I don't want to start
_THAT_ thread again) Other than that, the site is beautiful and has many
merchants, especially if you like jewelry!

I've just had a rather jolting thought ... do you realize that all across
America, hundreds of unsuspecting teenaged moppets are posting or e-mailing to

I must step in here....while I lived in Jersey, I couldn't WAIT to get the
hell out of that state. So, I moved...to LOUISIANA! Now, all I want is to go
back to Jersey. Just got back from a weekend there, and I'm homesick already.
As soon as I can find a decent job up there, I'm outta New Orleans!

Almost as nice as nearby Brick (near Wall) where I grew up. :)

Guess this is my delurk, though I've posted a time or two before.

I volunteer at NJRK. I happen to love it, some don't, many are
indifferent. I just ask that people judge for themselves. We do
some things very well, and some things, well, need improvement.
One thing I've seen about all the volunteers involved is a great
enthusiasm. But anyway, this isn't about NJRK in general, just in
specific. :)

This past weekend was our opening weekend, and I think it went
quite nicely. The storyline this year is really good, and the
final battle (as always) is not to be missed. Lots of fighting,
lots of good dramatic bits. I haven't gotten to see most of the
shows yet, but I've had fun at what I have seen.

Monday, despite the rain, turned out to be a gorgeous day for
doing the faire. I was doing pedestrian control ("Good day,
please do be sure to cross when the constable doth give you
leave to do so!") all 3 days from 10:30 til noon (Yep, I was
the one with the floppy green hat and the scary level of
enthusiasm :) and on Monday, I swear there wasn't a group
that came in that first 45 minutes or so without at least one
renrat in it. :) Plus, the crowds were really enthusiastic.

We've got a bunch of new merchants this year, including what
appears to be at least *three* new clothing merchants. Woohoo!
I do miss Lundegaard Armory and Fellowship Foundry (from where
my wedding toasting goblets came) a lot, though I *did* get to
see Bethany on Sunday and pass my "Ren Geek" pin test. :)

I staffed the axe throw for a few hours on Sunday and Monday
and got to perfect a new spiel. I still need to find a way to
work in the line "I went to the New Jersey Renaissance Kingdom
and all I got was this lousy flesh wound!" though. :)

Oh, and two special thank yous must go out to Brian, who fixed
my feet so thoroughly on Monday that I could stand for an hour
and a half later that day and not notice, and Sue, who sewed me
a great new skirt, charged me a pittance, and made it of fabric
that magically shed all the mud I got on it on Monday when I
fell. Stop by the massage booth and Dress Your Dreams!

So, here I sit on Thursday, waiting impatiently for Saturday.

Funny thing...Lisa and I have travelled here and there since we've been
together, and one of my fondest wishes has been to retire and leave this area
for someplace nice with a lower cost of living (which would be *almost*
anyplace else not adjoining a major metropolis). But no matter where we go,
there always seems to be something that's better about Jersey. Not saying I've
changed my mind about leaving someday, just that it's not as bad as everyone
makes it out to be. Lots of people are surprised to find that it's not one
giant toxic waste dump here. Prolly way better than half the state is suburban
to rural in nature.

If you base your whole impression of a state on limited contact, you wind up
saying things like "Pennsylvania must always be under construction", or "Rhode
Island? I was in Rhode Island?" (just kidding folks...been to both, liked
both)

Oh, and for the record...Exit 1 (PIP), exit 18W/E (Turnpike), exit 67 (I-80) or
exit 161 (GSP), depending on where you're coming from. *G*

It's a very small faire, but the people are nice and very enthusiastic -
at least the volunteers definitely are. I signed up to volunteer, but I
think it may be too late for this year...

I went on Saturday for a few hours until closing. I've always been
impressed by the acting at this faire and since everyone is a volunteer,
everyone who's there *wants* to be there. I also had lots of fun watching
the Brigadier and his fencers, and participating in an archery shoot (made
it to the second round and it was my very first time pulling a bow!).

The last time I went was two years ago and there seemed to be more
merchants then. I overheard someone saying that many merchants left last
year. But there were new ones this year, so hopefully it will build back
up.

before that too. Hope to see you there! (I usually wear my wine-colored

Well we try to make the faire as interesting as possible since you can
realistically walk the entire faire in less than 40 minutes if you don't stop
and see the shows. I must say that the vendor quality is going downhill as of
late, there are fewer and fewer actual crafters as opposed to resellers there
anymore. Its a shame really.

Thank you whizzr, its about time someone said something nice about jersey.
Everybody always make fun of it like its one gigantic toxic waste dump or
something, especially new yorkers, but I can't blame them too much because all they
ever see from that side of the river is the turnpike, and I have to say, it ain't
pretty round that part of jersey. Over 90% of the rest of the state is either
suburban or farm land which make for veyr nice living and scenery. But the state
does have a fewe drawbacks. Insurance, road signs (they never seem to go where they
say or just plain aren't maked), NJ DMV (WHO REALLY SUCK!) and a few other minor
annoyances but on the whole it's very pleasant and safe.

I'll have to admit, even though I live just down the street from VARF, it
would have to be the Maryland Festival in the fall. It just seems to have
the proverbial "little bit of everything." (Also it's been around for over
20 years --plenty of time to work out the glitches.)

It's more than a shame. It's official, I will not be back at NJRK next
year. It is not a renaissance fair, it is community theatre. Now that's
fine and I wish them luck, but I wish that they would stop pretending that
they want merchants there when they do everything possible to drive them
away. Cavalier Attitudes (Kate Stafford, the blade seller) will also be
pulling out. Fencing may continue under the management of my two Majors, but
at this time they have not made a final decision.

For that I am very sorry. One of the best things that we did this year (our
first at NJRK) was watching the kids "fence". Everyone was very friendly to my
little renrugrats, and even "let" my six year old son win. I wanted to say
thank you Devon for showing my kids why I love faire.

This may be the biggest blow to the NJRF. Hopefully now they'll treat
the vendors with some respect, considering half of the reason that I go
is for the fencing, like many others. Devon, I shall miss you, but at
least for now, I'll still be able to fence for the remainder of this
run. Too bad though, I figured by next season I might be able to win
the daily prize fight at least once and win a nice t-shirt. Well, looks
like I'll just have to start coming out to the fencing practices then.

To give people an idea of the idiocy of the management at NJ, my
girlfriend who happens to be hawking parasols and fans for one of the
booths there is now restricted to the nice shady, wooded path of the
faire grounds, instead of being allowed to wander about. To explain, NJ
is shaped like an "L", with the lower part being in the woods and the
rest of the faire all in the sun. My girlfriend is not allowed near any
of the shows that keep the patrons in the bright sun. Why is this?
Because, supposedly another vendor complained about the wandering
hawkers. Yet no other vendor at the faire is selling fans or parasols,
so where does the problem come from? Now, this past Sunday, one of the
faire’s own security personnel passed out due to heat stroke. You would
think that selling parasols to the patrons would be a good idea (maybe
by preventing a bad experience by people suffering form heat
stroke/exhaustion?)

I'll be there this weekend. Why? Cause it's so damn close to my house,
I like the fencing booth, my girlfriend and friends will be there, and
cause I was stupid enough to buy a season pass.

Devon, you know I'm sorry about this. Not surprised in the slightest that it has

Umm, sorry to tell you this, but the Flaming Idiots are in another
east coast faire, the Ft. Lauderdale Renaissance Faire. Granted, it
is in February, but it is on the east coast.

Errr.... In the first place, Newark isn't _that_ nasty.

But more to the point, unless you're actually _in_ Newark, there's no
point in going through Newark to get to the airport. All the branches
of the NJ Turnpike (I-95), US 22, I-78, US 1, US 9 and NJ 28 all
converge there.

Have I told you lately that I love you, Wulfie?

I suppose Newark is not that nasty compared to, oh, say, some areas of
N'Awlins (if you're familiar w/ n'awlins, back me up!! back me up!!): the
Ninth Ward, the Desire Projects, the St. Bernanrd Projects, Washington Ave.
Palmetto St., the Quarter, even!!!

IMHO, Newark is less desirable than Philly. I'd fly into AC, but I've not
found an inexpensive flight there...YET.

Regarding Newark, AND Philadelphia for that matter... I am reluctant to share
most of my (overwhemingly negative) opinions of these cities and others, out of
the knowledge that there is likely someone on AFR who calls such places home,
and who loves them as much as I love my home.

I will say that upon one of my visits to Newark (NJ, so we avoid the DE

Mr. Wulf must not have paid his tolls on the turnpike then. You can see lots
of green then.

I won't knock all of Jersey, I live here and there are parts that are
beautiful, but I've been to Newark. It's pretty nasty.

Alright, you dragged this outta me.

To clarify, I meant I didn't remember any green *in Newark*. I've seen grass
and trees elsewhere in NJ. HOWEVER... and this post may actually belong in the
weird signs thread... here's a true anecdote that sticks in my craw... er, mind
about my whole experience living there:

I lived in Jersey for seven months. I worked in Philadelphia, across the
Delaware river, for most of that time. And every day, when I'd be heading home
from work, I'd cross the Ben Franklin bridge, pay the toll (::grumble::), and
pull away from the toll plaza when, there amidst the greenery (I'm being a
little generous here) on the right shoulder, stood the sign:

WARNING - EVERGREEN TREES TREATED WITH NOXIOUS SPRAY

In the next seconds, you're not even done contemplating the usage of the word
"Noxious" on a sign that has "Warning" written in bold red letters, when you've
travelled the next few dozen yards to the next sign: "Welcome to New Jersey,
the Garden State."

I can't be the only person who worries about this.
