ALT.RAP XIV:XIX feedback

I first heard "Battle Mode" when I barely knew any of
you folks... I guess I haven't been around that long.
[Checking this post before I hit the send button I
realize it doesn't contain anything substantial.
But I couldn't be bothered to write another one.
So congrats on another CD fellas. I'm out.]
Anyways, let's get to it:
The line-up is really none of my business, but as much
as I'm pleased to see one of the old school alt.rap heads
on this CD (Laze), I regret that someone like Mr. Bravo
is not on it. Oh well, he probably didn't submit.
Artwork is once again doper than on many other
independent releases.
"Intro" (Timid)
Timid pitched down. The reference to 'alt.rap.unsigned.tape'
def. gets the thumbs up. Timid has some type of refined
accent that makes him perfect for the job: "The gods have
re-convened their council once more...", dope.
Not sure about the rap part though. Is this a freestyle?
I don't think freestyles should be on albums, but... moving on...
"Half Yall" (Analyze)
"Y'all out there don't know me all". Indeed... Track is
interesting. Flow is too hysteric, forced 'conversational'
tone a la Cam'ron. Okay concept, decent lyrics.
"1st Infiltry Radio" (All Topics and Fayce)
Guess the beat programming is supposed to be on some
military vibe? Flows are solid, but damn these keyboard
sounds. Cheesy as hell. That just won't do.
"The best runners-up since Eric B. For President", haha.
The fast fade-out is not very professional.
"Blood-Ink" (Timid)
Dope intro. The rhythm is a notch too experimental.
But probably done on purpose. Nice bass tone.
The chorus is another thing that's weird. What's
the connection between "I bleed ink from pens
like blood from veins" and "I'm sick/ill/dope/hot"?
Makes not much sense.
Other than that, quality lyrics from Timid, albeit
a tad bit simpler than usual.
"Gun Symphony" (Killah and Analyze)
Nice idea to mix up gunfire and strings for the
chorus. Not executed to pefection though.
Kinda diggin' the Killah slang. Good thing he's not
shouting but keeps his voice at normal level.
The same goes for Analyze who sounds more
natural than on "Half Yall". Very dope final
minute.
"2 in the Mornin'"
See my "inTimidation" review. Nice to see it
included here. I swear this is one of my most
played songs this year. Oh, and has this one
been 'mastered' as well? Methinks so. There's
definitely an improvement.
"Alt.Rap Idol" (skit)
Is this a Paget parody? ROFLMAO.
Who did this? Dave himself? This is
hilarious. WTF.
"You Wanna Battle Me?" (Rhythmic AKA Parks and Chill)
Finally something that you might read in an alt.rap online
battle coming alive, especially Parks' part. Very nice beat.
First track that really impresses me.
Would be even doper if it was a Parks solo cut.
"Save Me" (Analyze)
I appreciate the personal touch. Thankfully none
of the forced delivery. But that's the third time this
guy pops up and it's only the 9th track. Does he
know what alt.rap is? Just being sarcastic now.
Anyway, thumbs up.

"Bloody Basics 3" (Killah and Timid)
Uhm...okay.
"Showboat" (Skrabble)
That's Holy Child, the Dirty South representative, haha.
Where is this guy, BTW? Wasn't he kinda spiritual?
Right, there it is. And all the way still "bangin' chopped up
Screw". Anyway, don't like the voice at all. Flow is okay,
very varied, rappin' robots should take notice.
"Final Magnus 2" (Killah and Darth)
Magnus? Sounds like Latin. Or a Swedish first name.
As usual they put in a lot of work with sound effects,
building tracks, creating moods, etc. Lots of polishing
diamonds in the rough, but so far no real banger from
anything that had Killah's name on it.
Indimidating voices and unusual lyrics, that's their forte.
"Voicemail"
Nice touch. There's no MJ on it because there doesn't
need to be.
"Who's that Writing?" (Laze)
Oh boy. You got years of experience adding up to a
nice little ditty that doesn't take itself too serious.
Serene, superior. One of the top 3 cuts here.
"Speak on It (Timid and Rhythmic AKA Parks)
Glad to see Rhythmic making another appearance.
But when it comes to reflective stuff like that, Timid's
the reference. Not much going on w/ the beat.
"Lick it Bitch" (A to the L)
A to the L is a man of many talents but does he really
have to rap? I mean I dug the "Battle Mode" songs
because they had a lot going on, but here he sounds
like the average wanna-be rapper. Just sounds forced.
Props for getting personal, but what's the purpose of a line
like "A to the L is back, a shining light in the field of rap"?
Sounds like he's seriously considering a rap career.
"I do your ass worse than Freaky Tah." Damn kid, you slippin'.
"When Darkness Reflects" (Andrew Octopus, Killah and Darth)
Octopuss does some poetry/battle mixture thing. Somewhere
between chilling and wack. What's really dope though
is the contrast to the Killah/Darth vocals. Eerie effect.
They'd be a dope crew. Diggin' the surreal track.
"Alt.Rap 2K2" (Timid, A to the L, UNIVERsON, Pizon, Analyze, Killah)
The grande finale. Do you guys realize how absurd it is to put
UNIVERsON and Pizon on the same track? Especially when
the one's echo still lingers when the other has already begun...
A to the L sounds a lot better on this one. Too bad UNIVERsON is
limited to this one performance. He's one rapper that catches
you off guard with his sheer engery/speed. Pizon came nice as well.
Ultimately prolly better than the "Battle Mode" posse cut.
"Gangsta Medley (Outro)" (Rane)
"Scarface" soundbites are always welcome. Is there
a better sounding version available?

actually the verse for the posse cut is one of the weakest things I've
ever done IMO - not to get all Paget-ified on y'all, but I was dying
from a cold, and Drill Sergeant Timid was barking for a verse so I
cobbled this together real quick...
Lick It Bitch was also a last minute type thing - it wasn't meant to
take itself seriously, hence the non-relevant name, and a lot of the
lines were scribbled down to fit in around a few lines I already had
sitting... it was originally set over a different beat, but I forgot
about the Mike S one, and thought it would be cool to use it...
I don't mean to bring down the tone of the compilation together by
saying shit was thrown in at the last minute either - I simply meant
that it was submitted at the last possible second before the deadline
because:
1) I'd said I would come thru with something
2) I thought it came out pretty good...

this was horrible. the cheap ass keyboard guitar effect (yea i know you
actually have a cheap keyboard now timid, i saw it in yer vid) is

yeah it was dave...funny as fuck, except why did you fade dave out in mid
sentence? I guess it would have been hard to get a definite end to that
actually, so that was probably right thing.

this was such a fucking piss track. Generic wack battle netcee checklist -
gay pimply teenager voice? check. wordplay on "bar"? check. wordplay on
"mic"/"mike"? check. silly puns that dont even make sense? check. forgot
about dre-style rhyme pattern that strings together a whole load of
completely unrelated phrases? check. horrible.

I think the contrast is what makes it, too. Killah and I are actually (sort of
slowly but surely) working on an EP to come out later this year.

Bravo was gonna submit and he sent me two cd's in the mail with stuff on it

well the song just came from listening to the bassline...just started
babbling to myself and the chorus came out. the "I bleed ink from pens like
blood from veins" is basically saying that this is in my blood and natural
to me. the odd voice saying it is me fuckin around and i was like....hey i'm
gonna use that it. just buggin, gotta have fun with ya stuff ya know. and
the "I'm sick/ill/dope/hot" was delivered the way it is; plain and with
boredom to show that it's just so natural and easy for me to be this
way..."oh yea i'm dope whatever it's normal, nothing new...i'm actually
kinda tired of it"

this is a parody of the American Idol tv show. yes that's Paget and the
emcee in the background getting dissed is Pizon. Pizon's idea, we wanted
DOKool to be the emcee but he wouldn't do it. Paget is only finding out that
he was dissing Pizon now as he is reading this because I had him record his
shit and email it to me before the rest of it was put together. Pi went
ahead and put himself out there for the benefit of getting it done. Paget go
ahead and jizz on yourself, you get to diss Pizon on CD. YOu should buy all
the copies and distribute them for free just for that. haha btw, Pizon was
the one that faded out the end....i thought he should have left it...Dave
said some funny shit in his next few words on that Snoop Dogg freestyle bit.

it sounded wack as fuck, but everyone, well, some people seem

It is absurd. I commented before that I had initially wanted to be
taken off when I heard that it had become wack (Timid had assured
me that Pizon wasn't going to be on it, then later he told me that
Pizon had recorded a verse). I guess it's my Echo that lingers, I know
that it got one added to it.
I love the way you say I catch you off gaurd. But i'm laughing, because
it wouldn't be the energy/speed of the track I submitted that would
catch you off gaurd.
Last comment on this... How the eff could it be any worse than last
years posse cut? I backed out after hearing a couple of the verses
knowing that they were all going on. URGH...

No really, this is the opposite of robotic. That doesn't make
it good, but at least there's some variation in the flow.

It's simple: your performance stands out here because of your
high energy level. But if I might add, it would be interesting to
hear you do some full tracks, without any sore throat, no
throwaway tracks on your pal's sexual escapades.

nope I never said that Pi wasn't going to be on the track...I told you that
he was on it from the get go...hell he had his verse done before anyone and
I told you that it wasn't going to change and was up to you if you wanted to

There is a place for "freestyles" on an album. I of all people

Pizon was infact the first person to record his verse, but when you
approached me to be on it, I asked who was on it... You said that it
was just You, Me, Killah and maybe AtotheL. I said something along
the lines of "good, aslong as pizons not on it" in some sort of
jocular sarcastic manner, and you said that Pizon didn't want to be
on it... Later you told me that he was on it, and had recorded a verse,
at which point I said that i'd rather not be on it, and then you convinced
me that I should be on it... and in the end I saw sense, even though it
does mean lowering of standards on my part. Compromise...

At first I did think someone was parodying you. And then,
since you're the only English bloke (apart from Redeem
who would sound very diff.) involved, they might just
could have used anybody who was able to imitate a
stereotypical English accent and the tone of your voice.
Now I realize that you yourself gave a parody. Another
question can be also ruled out, given your answer: You're
not parodying yourself but ultimately the 'American Idol'
(or the UK version of it) show. STILL I inevitably think
of hypercritical Dave dismissing any newcomer (although
wack he may be) when I listen to the skit. The fact that
you're cutting Pizon short certainly does help.

is back" part. Obviously you're back, feel free to state that
you're back. But "a shinging light in the field of rap"?! I'm not

like I said the whole thing was built around a few lines I had lying
around - i agree it does jump around a lot... but I was going thru a
little drama at the time, so those lines were applicable and kinda
suited the mood I was in, and the aggressive tone of the rest of it...

well this was basically a continuation of that in my eyes (obviously
