Hitting animals with bikes isn't that uncommon. I've hit 3 possums, 2 at 70
mph. Several people I know have hit deer, and one tried riding under a
moose. Totaled his bike and messed up his hands. He bought the bike back
from the insurance and had it redone. "Moosekiller" is now painted blood
red, fading to black.
As a rule of thumb, I won't swerve to miss a small animal. I'd rather hit it
straight on, with the forks pointed ahead. If you're turned, you'll usually
go down. Small dogs, cats, squirrels, possums... Straight ahead and no
brakes. Sounds cruel, but you're more likely to actually miss 'em this way,
and if you don't, at least you can ride it out. Feels like hitting a speed
bump.

It must take some kinda' 'guts' to even attempt riding under a moose.

Sounds logical.
My only biking experience, if one could call it that, was over 35
years ago and back then we were all so high that if we hit something
we never knew if real of simply a figment of our 'high'.

Not much choice when you go around a curve at 3 AM and it's standin' across
the road in front of you. If he hadn't had apehangers, he might have made
it. His first instinct was "Duck!"

I went to a benefit in Owasso awhile back for a guy that tried missing a dog
at low speed. He went down and ruptured his spleen. He's lucky to be alive.

We make a point out of tryin' to stay in camp once sunset hits. We were
headin' back a little late in '00, and had about 6-8 deer run in between the
first, 2nd, and 3rd bikes. We were lucky, all 5 bikes made it thru without
problems. Sure was a good test of the brakes though.
This weekend outta be a blast. There could be as many as 8-10 bikes. Around
20 people... I've got pics on my web site from '00 & will add more after
this weekend. If I can dig up pics from other years, I'll add 'em too. This
is a yearly event that we started in '98.

Quite frankly, there's not much forward to find about Okahoma with a pitiful
part of it being that Okahoma has a number of advantages compared to other
states, but seems too paralyzed to run forward with them. For instance, Tulsa
is rated as the second best place in the nation to do business, but Citgo wants
to move to Houston. Economy. com ranked Oklahoma as the fourth least expensive
state in the nation to do business, but Bass Pro wouldn't come to OKC unless it
got a special deal from city hall. Oklahoma has the 2nd lowest tax burden in
the nation when federal taxes are also figured in, but politicians tell us that
Oklahomans are over taxed, and industry won't come to Oklahoma because the
state income tax is too high. However, media companies don't have to pay state
income taxes, but name one media chain that has chosen Oklahoma as its
headquarters. The state seems to be more interested in maintaining its
position for being no. 1 in the nation, possibly the world, for putting women
in prison than doing something about being no. 49 in teacher pay. And who
knows maybe the latest populaton estimates will find that Oklahoma is starting
to lose people. If Oklahoma as a state can't move forward, then how do you
expect a lot of people think they're gonna be able to move forward with their
lives by staying around here? Face it, Oklahoma is in a severe state of
decline and will continue that way until some leadership comes along bright
enough to find the light at the end of the tunnel. Boomer

Nah.
It started back in the spring of last year and hasn't ebbed yet so it
can't be related to phases of the moon.
A solar cycle might explain it, as the sun spot cycle is 11 years.

Well, like I said I'm just an unadventurous Oklahoma homebody more so than Gov.
Keating who left the state after he served his terms in office. Kinda makes me
wish I was borned to be a homebody in a more advanced, really booming state
like Colorado, so I wouldn't notice so much that's bad to complain about.
Oklahoma is likely to become even more paralyzed in 2005 since the state house
is expected to become Republican dominated since nearly twice as many current
Democrats have to go out then Republicans. Then the Senate and the House may
not agree on much of anything of major importance. Meanwhile, the more you NOT
notice what's wrong with Oklahoma the more stupid you are.

I had a rotten branch fall from a tree a couple of years ago, just as I
drove under it. The piece that fell was about 1-1/2" dia & 12" long. It was
so rotten you could almost crumble it. It hit end first and came thru the
windshield. I couldn't believe it, I was only going about 35 or so.

People refusing to clean packed snow and ice off their before *before*
driving is a pet peeve of mine and has been for a long time.
Over the years I've even followed (at a safe distance) a few of them
to inform them of the dangers of hauling a few hundred pounds of ice
around on their vehicles.
Most folks seem to have never thought of the dangers a block of ice
flying off their vehicle presents to those around them.
And of course a few simply don't care.
Or worse, think it's funny that they are 'ice bombing' those around
them.

That most 'ice blocks' flying off vehicles are flat on one side does
mean they will sail, turn and sometimes dive as they pass through the
air makes it almost impossible to guess exactly where they are headed
at any given point in time.
