There's a bigger issue here, the point is being made extreme because
that's the only way most people listen.
Yesterday, people lost accounts (or in one case, a job) for posting
offtopic at AFU, today it's cascades, tomorrow it may be what's not
considered to be politically correct.
Obviously, UseNet is more than the just the US, and free speech isn't a
guarantee in many countries that have access to it, but I think it's
reasonable to expect that people should have to ability to post
whatever they want - uncensored. I think it speaks volumes about the
people that want to curtail the ability to speak without restriction,
usually people that can't control themselves, so they do the next best
thing and try to control others.
People that are running commercial servers have to remember that they
didn't start provisioning the news to make Bill Gate's dollars, the
major importance they serve is to enable people to speak their minds,
unedited by some stupid self-serving AUP/TOS, they do so much like a
teacher doesn't chose that field based on economics.
You have Stephen K. Gielda of Cotse.com, he understands and I will quote
from his open letter posted at his web site, it's about why he runs his
posting service:
===
Freedom of Speech is the foundation of a free society. Our country (USA)
was founded upon it. But it is under attack now. The problem is that the
only speech that needs protecting is unpopular speech. In order to
protect freedom of speech for all you must protect unpopular speech. If
you give away that freedom and censor, you'll have no recourse later if
someday it is your own speech that has become unpopular. But if you
support unpopular speech you will get attacked, and attacked viciously.
We believe in it enough to offer these services free with no revenue
return at all. It is our way of taking a stand. This may only be a tiny
stand, but freedom is being taken away in tiny pieces in the name of
protecting against unpopular speech. What is popular today will change
tomorrow, but the restrictions passed will stay. Freedom of speech must
not be forced out because someone does not like what someone else says.
This has been our stand against the eating away of that freedom.
Running Cotse is no picnic. It is a very large site and service,
administration is a 24x7 job. It means dealing with DoS attacks, hacking
attempts, complaints, and visits from the FBI. It means dealing with
harassment, threats, and personal attacks. It means 24x7 monitoring of
security lists and issues to fend off cracking attempts. It means not
spending time with my family, going on vacations, or away for the
weekend. No, it is definitely no picnic.
Why is it so difficult? Besides being a large reference site with a lot
of traffic and operating on a shoe-string (we like to call it
boot-strapping)? It is difficult only because we gave people the ability
to post to Usenet. Usenet is a battleground. It is global unmoderated
anarchy at it's finest where law is attempted through intimidation and
cyber attacks. If those don't work, the ante is raised to include real
life attacks.
We created the ability to post to help protect individuals from these
types of attacks. We shielded their IP address so they could not be
attacked for what they said. We have been very successful in this with a
user base of over 10,000 on our webmail service. Our service was
utilized during the Malaysian elections and the Yugoslavian conflict to
enable people to speak, and it has protected thousands of individuals
from real life attacks due to a disagreement in an on-line discussion.
But I'm battle scarred and shell shocked. It hasn't been an easy fight.
Those against us are not the governments, they are not the corporations,
they are not the legal system. They are individuals self-righteous in
their views. They are the very people who's freedom of speech we are
trying to protect. They have a right to be heard. But at the same time
they work hard to squelch any opposing opinions or speech, those others
also have a right to be heard. If they succeed, they will only have
given away their own freedom.
They don't seem to understand this, or if they do, they don't seem to
care. They forge our headers and commit net abuse to get support in
their war against us. They sign up for accounts and skirt the edges of
our policies to irritate others and build support against us. They have
one goal, shut us down or get me to shut it down because we shield
someone they want to attack. All because that person said something
unpopular or disagreed with their views.
I've been threatened, attacked, and harassed. We've had to change our
phone number due to 47 untraceable calls in a 24 hour period just to
call my wife nasty names. We've lost advertisers due to forged e-mail.
We've had attempted mails to our employers (fortunately we are our
employers and it's actually kind of amusing to get a message sent from
you to you to try to get you fired). Our family has gotten calls. This
is just what I know about, what I don't know is probably twice as much.
I've been forged all over usenet, been called every name in the book,
and have had my name forged to some of the bomb and death threats sent.
People have done everything they can to make my name mud. Recent
postings to alt.prisons have been made in an attempt to stir up attacks
on me and my family. Why? Because one of our users called someone
posting racist messages a racist name. The one who started the entire
racism stuff is now angry that he got called a name.
Why do I still do it? Everyone I know asks me that question. People
think I am nuts for putting up with everything. People think I should
just close it down. After all, it makes us no money, why bother?
These attacks we get are not because of illegal activity from our
services, that can be addressed legally. They are not from harassment
from our service, if they were we would be working with law enforcement.
These attacks are not from net abuse from our service, we worked hard
developing strict policies regarding abuse. Our policies were discussed
and adopted with help from the net-abuse groups and we continue to be an
active member in those groups.
No, these attacks are because someone said something unpopular or got
involved in a flamefest. They are because the attacker has no valid
legal recourse and no valid complaints of real abuse. These attacks
exist only to squelch an opposing viewpoint or to win a flamewar by
account term in an attempt to effect banishment from the Internet for
that opposing view. Everyone has a right to express their view, even if
it is found distasteful by others.
So on to the main question: Is it worth it? They are hoping that I
eventually decide no. I don't think I am going to do that.

Trolls often point out the absurdities in bad policy (BOMP, BOS, etc.)
and are the major part of causing more representative and reasonable
principles at Usenet. We are here to teach people that just because you
disagree with what a post may say, you need to learn to live with it and
develop tolerance, whether it's a smiley or offtopic post.

I waited a bit before I replied, and I can tell you it's just as bad as
ever and I can tell you that the people involved are only getting more
and more pissed off, so I don't see it getting any better soon.
In fact, I see it worsening.

No, not much time for me, I see all these posts where people are saying
that I'm posting as Folklore Unit, Adie, Zenwolf, Natasha, etc, it just
makes everyone feel that most here are even more stupid than originally
thought. Whatever happened, wasn't AFU infamous for doing proper
research?
We also laugh reading about all the guessing at what's *really* at work
here, and it couldn't more more simpler.
It's not about Kounas.
It's not about Simon.
It's not about smileys.
It *is* about having the freedom to post whatever you want, and you are
seeing an aggravated version of it.
Individuals that post non-commercial to UseNet can *not* be spammers,
and there's an attempt to link the hated *spammer* term to people that
fight for freedom of speech, this subject just was discussed and agreed
upon over at nanau and nana-p. Adims and UseNettians came to the
consensus that individuals that post in a non-commercial manner, even if
they have a high BI>, *should not* be TOS'ed off as breaking AUP for
spamming and/or have their posts canceled, at least that what the people
that participated felt.
It's yet another dirty trick that people who want to deny your freedom
use and it's what's being put to the test here at AFU.

Groups can't die, they only exist virtually, interconnected with servers
around the world.
And we are here because of how much we love UseNet.

No, and I don't think that'll ever happen, if for no other reason out of
pure spite of the anal, embittered regs here, cause this seems to be the
UseNet capital for it.

I think the commercial providers remember very well the major
importance they serve, i.e.. allowing people to download warez and
pr0n. This is demonstrated by the number of commercial Usenet
providers who don't offer cheap(er) text-only accounts, and have
provisions against people posting whatever they like.

Of course individuals posting non-commercial messages to Usenet can be
spammers. You see, spam isn't about determining the intent of the
post. No, that would be too close to, ahem, restricting freedom of
speech. Spam is excessive multi-posting - repeating the same thing
many times over.
If you post 'snuh', and nothing but that, so that the BI of those
posts is 20 or greater during a 45-day period, it is cancelable spam.
Even in lesser quantities those posts can be called spam, even if they
aren't cancelable (in the Big Eight and alt.*), or all that abusive.

cogently and passionately expressed, dean.
thank you for posting. :)
little toad
This was exactly what discussed the last two weeks over at nanau and
nana-p, in regards to the Spelling Troll.
The consensus was that the Spelling Troll, though under the Breidbart
Index qualifies as spam, in actuality was not and thus not cancelable.
The Breidbart Index is used just an excuse by censors to cancel whatever
they want, and hide behind it when they are held to account.
I think it's best that we decide for ourselves what we should and
shouldn't read, not some out of touch adim that might not even read
news.
RFC-1036 forbids third party cancels:
3.1. Cancel
cancel <Message-ID>
If a message with the given Message-ID is present on the local system,
the message is cancelled. This mechanism allows a user to cancel a
message after the message has been distributed over the network.
If the system is unable to cancel the message as requested, it should
not forward the cancellation request to its neighbor systems.
Only the author of the message or the local news administrator is
allowed to send this message. The verified sender of a message is the
"Sender" line, or if no "Sender" line is present, the "From" line. The
verified sender of the cancel message must be the same as either the
"Sender" or "From" field of the original message. A verified sender in
the cancel message is allowed to match an unverified "From" in the
original message.

First, I appreciate your taking the time to give me a thoughtful reply.
Second, I have always felt that meta-discussions are off-topic and
should be kept to a minimum. Although I find some of what you say
interesting, I don't want to spend a great deal of time talking about it
on a.f.u. Yet since I also feel that rational discussion is better than
the gibberish we got before, I am willing to give this a little more
space than I might otherwise.
Are you indeed Dean, as some others said you are? I find the idea of
rapidly changing one's identity to be very disconcerting. Today you are
"Plus minus." If tomorrow you are something else, I won't recognize you.
I have to say I'm a bit nervous about talking to you at all. Some people
have never forgiven "Hanoi Jane" for daring to talk to the North
Vietnamese. (That's just an analogy, never mind that now.)
> Yesterday, people lost accounts (or in one case, a job) for posting

At this point, I don't know what happened that actually triggered off
the trouble. Maybe you've said it somewhere else. I don't think I need
to know the details, but I'm not sure.
On the thought that some people might well have killfiled you and not
seen your post, I will leave it here unsnipped. Those who have seen it,
scroll long.
All right, so you and your friends see this as a free speech issue, I
got it. You are willing to suffer for the cause -- got it.
Do we, by the way, agree that the right to free speech does not cover
every single utterance that might come out of your mouth, or be typed on
a keyboard? The right to free speech does not permit you to slander, or
lie under oath, or to commit fraud, or create false panic, or conspire
to commit crimes, etc, etc. Please understand I'm not accusing you of
doing any of these things, I'm just making sure that we agree that the
right of free speech doesn't cover everything one is *able* to say. It's
limited somewhere. Abilities or powers are one thing, and rights are
another. I suppose you've had many lively discussions on just those
matters.
Back to the matter at hand. The place in which one utters the speech
matters. An analogy. Do you think a kid has the right to go into a
public library, or a public hospital, with a boom-box and turn on it on
full volume? Do you believe that the staff of those places or even the
patrons are right to request, then instruct him to turn it off?
We're trying to keep a discussion group here. Believe it or not, it
takes effort and a lot of individual decisions to create a useful,
informative discussion group in a public forum. If the equivalent of a
kid with a boom-box wanders in, we, who came here for other, stated
purposes, feel we have the right to ask him to turn that down or to
leave. If he stubbornly refused, we would call for help.
But we here in Usenet have no last resort. We can't call the cops or the
security guards. The closest we have is to tell our ISPs (or whatever)
that there's somebody here causing a problem. Exactly what they do about
it is not our affair. Oh, maybe if cops dragged the kid with the
boom-box away and tortured him, then we should know about that. It's out
of proportion to the offense. Are you saying that is what's happening to
you?
Well, they can suffer virtual deaths, then. I've seen ghost towns:
Usenet groups, Yahoo clubs, mail lists that no longer have any
participants. When enough people who used to post there decide it's no
longer worth the hassle and leave, the group dies.
> And we are here because of how much we love UseNet.

Well, I don't know what to say. There are a lot of regulars I admire. If
they are embittered, I have to think that it is for good cause. And yes,
they certainly are a tough crew. Does that mean the group is doomed to
perpetual attack? Are you the Irresistible Forces and we're the
Immovable Objects?

Some people brought it up, but they were shouted down. Rightly so, in
my opinion. After all, determining what's commercial and what's not
requires that the spam canceler looks at the content of the post.
That's a bad thing.
>The consensus was that the Spelling Troll, though under the Breidbart
>Index qualifies as spam, in actuality was not and thus not cancelable.
I read the same debate, and... well, no.
First of all, the BI has nothing to do with what is spam. It's a
mathematical formula used to calculate how much weight a given set of
articles places on the network. It can be, and often is, applied to
articles that definitely are not spam. In the NANAP discussion someone
mentioned that the Spelling Troll posts enough that his articles' BI
is over 20. Then they debated whether the content of those articles is
substantively identical.
Spam is the same thing repeated many times over. Some said that since
the Spelling Troll's articles could be fairly easily created by a bot,
they were substantively identical. They argued that the spelling
corrections were a hashbuster. Others pointed out that ST targeted
certain groups and certain individuals, and that he'd occasionally add
further comments than just the spelling correction. According to them
this suggested that though the content was highly repetitive, it
wasn't substantively identical, and that his articles are not
cancelable spam.
Nothing even close to consensus was reached. This seems to be enough
to maintain the status quo - the Spelling Troll's posts are not
cancelable.
>The Breidbart Index is used just an excuse by censors to cancel whatever
>they want, and hide behind it when they are held to account.
See my description of the BI above.
>I think it's best that we decide for ourselves what we should and

The problem is that spammers post their articles in huge volumes.
Users may be able to decide for themselves, but newsservers are
adversely affected by the sheer number of messages these people pump
out.
>RFC-1036 forbids third party cancels:
It also says that the From header must consist of an e-mail address
and optionally the user's full name.
Besides, the letters stand for Request For Comments.
Whatever it is, rest assured it will be far more creative than the sum

See, that's the image that AFU regs try and project, but it's not true.
Now, if that was the case there wouldn't be a problem here.
The majority of the people here are pussy-assed, lying netKKKops, Phil
Little-Dick himself has already posted about what happens when he isn't
happy when a admin won't cancel an account.
He just carefully reads through the providers AUP/TOS and tries to find
a rule that he can twist to get an account canceled, after all, as he
says, *anything* to save AFU.
Yet, even after he posts dangerous sounding drivel like that, many
AFU'ers seem to make-believe they didn't read it.
You certainly aren't the my-word-is-my-sword types, you seem to be
scared by words, not use them in battle.

One that was part of the *good 'ol boys* network, that's part of adim
mailing lists that some of the AFU regs belong to.
One that was sent a copy of the *bogus* charter, which says that only
ontopic discussion is allowed (let alone that most of the regs here post
offtopic on a regular basis).
Don't be surprised if we start doing the same thing, maybe target *you*,
we'll spam the ab...@worldnet.att.net mailbox and I bet we will get
results.
You know, *Viv*, you are already breaking AT&T's AUP, you aren't posting
with your full name, and if you think I'm joking, go climb through their
poorly designed web site and see for yourself.

Lie worse, than let's say...Simon?
The man that posts about how he recently called for a 30-Day no
NetKKKoping period (showing how reasonable he has tried to be), but now
says that this *sooper sekrit 30-Day no netKKKoping period* happened
last year.
Some of the worst liars I've ever witnessed on the net reside at AFU,
they make all these proclamations, yet never post anything to back up
their claims, and this after we continually back-up what we post.
When we do that, we are called *liars*, wonder what you call people that
don't post any sort of proof of what they talk about?

Ask the regs of nanau about db6's magical charter.
It's OK to abuse the net, as long as it's not one of the Burnore's pet
groups.
Now, Phil, don't try and netKKKop those that give answers you don't
like.

I surely hope you include that ASCII-smiley in your complaint.
Actually, you ought to include a snuh cascade in it as well. I am sure
the admin will appreciate your effort. We surely do.
Cheers, HWM
What does this have to do with AT&T having a AUP that bars your right to
privacy, that you must post to UseNet with YOUR REAL NAME if you want to
use them as a provider?
So, if I was a single female AT&T user that had a stalker on the loose,
and if I wanted to post via AT&T, I better choose between making my
location known (AT&T posts a IP that indicates the city you're posting
from) or not being able to post to UseNet.
That's an example what these AFU human scum cause, exploiting loop holes
of TOS/AUP's that can have far more serious implications than posting to
UseNet should have.
Henry, didn't I explain to you that all of your posts are against the
charter of alt.snuh?
>
> Cheers, HWM
What affects AUP/TOS the most?
Lawsuits.
Just wait until they get their pants sued off, after a stalker has
tracked down someone that used AT&T to post from.

That's your opinion.
Do you think repeating it over and over will make it catch on?
Now, for once and for all, explain how not morphing makes it OK for a
UseNet provider to cut off normal conversation in newsgroups?
> Omissions can be most telling..
I see you snipping away all sorts of my questions, but I'm too lazy to
do the grepping and anyway, I can do this with one hand tied behind my
back.
Here's another one that you have been dodging:
If morphing is done to *force* people to read posts, who *opens* the
post and reads it to them?
A little UseNet fairy?
While I'm asking questions that you seem to be avoiding (hey, you
brought it up, babe), what about that proof about how I've been morphing
over the last week?
Still waiting.

Who decides what's net abuse?
Even Phil "Little-Dick" Edwards, asswipe of AFU, agrees that there's no
way to be decisive about it.
Maybe the best way is for everyone to decide for themselves and find a
provider that matches their vision of an abuse-free UseNet, Supernews
comes to mind.

As I said, do what's right for you, no one should have to be forced to
have someone decide what's right and wrong for them.

My agenda is that I've been subbed to AFU for a while.
I enjoy posting there and I've opened-up quite a few eyes of the regs of
the group, more than you'd ever dreamed of possible at AHM.
That's been the mating call of the Burnores for a while now, are you

answer a post.

As I said before, you obviously haven't been reading the groups.
I've seen plenty of people post questioning the tactics of the nazi's
there.
You also haven't answered why you lie about describing a AFU is that is
awash in Snuh cascades.
I'd reckon that we take them more straight on then you did the regs of
AHM, during your invasion of it.
> Be fucking honest, asshole. You do it *Because *It *Drives *Them *Nuts.

It's not a crusade, but the more you try and push that lie, the more
people will question just how much of the truth you are saying, so,
please, indulge yourself.

You post regurgitated donkeyshit.

You and your "m'kay's*, I think that's *sweet*!.
This, coming from someone that posts a petitmorte.net addy and lives off
the shit that dangles from Stooges ass?

No, it's like this, Chuckles.
In Southern California this week, it's been in the eighties with blue
skies above and the water has been hovering at 70 degrees.
About the time you're pounding out your clever missives to UseNet, I'm
sitting at a beach bar having a drink with some pleasant looking young
lady in a bikini, as Mission Beach puts on a boardwalk show full of
beautiful freaks.
In a passing moment, I'll think about all the people locked in their
rooms, furiously posting Usenet must feel.
I'm sorry, darling, you'll just have to wait for my posts.

[roll] <tap, tap> [roll, roll, roll], Dean.
>Flames aren't as impressive when you turn off your spell checker.
What makes you think I use them for the sake of the odd r and h missing here
and there.
Speaking of spelling (the only thing about my post you are able to pick-at)
why is that most Snuh-er posts are mis-spelled net-cop warnings or other
"trollings" is there another reason besides lack of snuher-creativity?
--
S mhm28x28
Poaster of teh fine family taht si petitmorte.net ok bye
You'll have to reach further into your snuh manual to find an "insult" runs a
little smoother than that last attempt. Ever since I attributed Snuh to
diarrhoea you seem to start talking about shit a lot.
You obviously live off other peoples creative work, otherwise you wouldn't be
using symbols from the display of a Geller TOMI ECR as a nym would you? What
will it be next? "o" or perhaps you could pick the easiest and go for " 1"
Can't you just make something up yourself or would you like me to send you
some insults for you to use?

I wouldn't mind waiting if your posts were worth waiting for, besides that,
I'm sure you can find another excuse to make for putting time in between
somebody posting an insult, and you pasting and reusing it against somebody

Because you take too long to come up with something funny that's not been
copied from somebody else.
This is really embarrassing, I'd expect better from a school kid.

Let's back this up.
Because I've used a symbol from the display of a Geller TOMI ECR, that
means I'm living off other peoples creative work.
Does that mean that others using any sort of type characters are doing
so as well, or is it only the people using Geller TOMI ECR?

You still make no sense, whatsoever.
By your reasoning, since you use characters (other than the Geller TOMI
ECR, but characters, nonetheless), "you look like a complete and total
pratt"?
And how does one emulate a till?
Maybe you mean Emmit Till, a black man that was shot for whistling at a
white woman?
Mheh.

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
This is priceless, you don't even see that you admit you have yet to
insult.
Guess you weren't trying, 'eh?
This aint config, boy, the marks don't come in already trolled.

Again, not much sense there.
Now, talking about excuses, where's the proof of the excessive morphing

The correct cliche unoriginal is "barge pole"
Need I remind you that in the United Kingdom summer holidays start in July.
>Great, it'll give you *some* character.
Quite a bit of added character, considering the front line job I hold.

I'm not buying any of this crap. Here's a hint to help you understand that
one:

>By your reasoning, since you use characters (other than the Geller TOMI
>ECR, but characters, nonetheless), "you look like a complete and total

By using display-symbols from one, instead of normal words, perhaps?

That's a new one, how does that fit into your snuh cascades?

Then how the fuck can anybody ring it in?

The aim behind living isn't to insult and abuse people y'know. You shouldn't
encourage stuck up people like me to go around looking for fights. We
posh'ens leave that to the gyppo wannabes.
>Guess you weren't trying, 'eh?
You've guessed a lot of things about me and they all turned out to be wrong.
Try not to be so ass-umptuous next time. HTH.

It's a problem on your part. You'd better wise up, I hear the English GCSE
paper you'll sit soon has quite a few comprehension questions on it.

Oh dear. If you morph excessivly, then how does one keep up with your nyms?

>Using my lines again, good, it proves that you're capable of learning.
How did I know you were going to lay claim to something I said as "your
line." Oh I know, it's because you're being accused of being unoriginal, so
you want to make it look like other people are too.
Didn't your mummy tell you the story of the boy who cried wolf?

on their own and as a result developed severe cancer to the brain causing
several brain fuctions to cease, as a result empowering them to do unsual
things such as switching a display fridge off in their local convinience
store causing several asshole-customers to purchase curdled milk and butter
causing food-poisining to them and their family?

Idiot? I'm sure that would reduce even the most emotionally strong to tears.
Policy of Teh Folnk tends to be that posts are not snipped, as people like to
see a complete history of the thread. I hope this helps your understanding,
though I seriously doubt it will manage to "break through"
You gotta love it when they research your posting habits. How trolled is
that?
