BEST NY CORP??????

[BUZZKIL148]

Does anyone have any Ideas on who is and was the best JR corp in New York? Any
year and rank them as you see it. No flaming PLEASE. Remember this is just for
fun and to see what others think. Then we can do other states if anyone cares
to. But I would like to start with NY first.

That's easy...1955 & 1956 Summerville Shoremen from Rochester, NY We won
the NY State Legion those years beating the likes of the Sienna Queensmen
and Manhattan Toppers!

but ... can't help but think that one of the good St. Joe's years must have
been the best NY corps...

Tom--That was a great corps(Starlighters)--and the only time I saw them was at
an indoor show at the War Memorial in Rochester. Garfield and Blue Rock were
there also. My favorite NY corps though is the 1960 Queensmen.

Not an easy choice...Mt Carmel (Pepe's original corps) won NYState
Championships, and placed 5th in AL National back in the early 50s....as I
--only vaguely --recall the story turned legend, they lost winning second
place because of a torn drum sling, and some other freaky equipment infraction
during inspection... PLEASE don't hold me to the exactness of the
cause............and then there was St. Catherine's, Loretto, St. Joe's, Wynn
Center, OLPH, St. Rita's....but we'll discuss this in another message....age

New York State Produced many really good corps during the 60's, and 70's. To
say who was the best all these years later would be an
injustice to the memory of all the great New York Corps. I will however list my
personal favoruite New York Corps from the 60's and the 70's:

New York Skyliners.
St. Rita's Brassmen
St. Joe's Bativa
CMCC Warories
Purple Lancers.

Tis true that there were MANY great NY corps over the years, but if we are
talking junior corps during the DCI years then, the most successful NY corps
were:

Avant Garde
Long Island Kingsmen
St. Ignatius All Girls
Watkins Glen Squires
now, we also have all the corps that made it big in Class "A"/Division II and
III that would make this list MUCH longer. To list only a few of them would

Barons of Steuben
Long Island Grenadiers
CMCC Warriors
NY Lancers

but certainly our Div II championship year was most successful...

and mention must be given to DCI Class A champion in 1975 - The Greece

National finalists from NYS.

That being said...since Auburn is the only one to make DCI finals, they would
have to be the best.

The only ones who can debate that would be whomever placed the highest at
Nationals prior to 1972. I don't know who that would be.

don't be so cynical... I agree with everything you say and I didn't bring up
Patriots...

As far as national ranking and quality of corps... you have to go with
Auburn in 1975... for DCI era

but frankly... and my young Tommie I am able to judge this better than
yourself due strictly to age... St. Joe's at their best - I believe was
better than the 12th place Auburn corps in 1974... so whether it was 69 or
71.... or maybe even earlier... Joe's was better... in my humble
opinion... and - although I don't have the figures at hand... I believe
they finished higher than 12th a couple of times in shows where virtually
anyone who might be able to beat them were there... VFW 69 for one...

Post 41 still exists in Downtown Syracuse... yes it was the precursor of
the brigs... not sure when they moved to the PLAV but I would guess shortly

good class 'B' corps, at any rate. We never came close to them when I marched in

I think young Tommy Allen was at the VFW in Cleveland in 1964 with Walt and
Monnie to see his much older brother Jimmy, who was with Joe's. We finished 6th
and were the top Eastern Corps that night, topping the likes of St. Kevins,
Blessed Sac, Boston Crusaders and Garfield.

Funny no one has mentioned Utica Yankees. At the NYS AL in Syracuse earlier
that same year, 1964, Joe's took third behind the Yankees and Frankfort
Starlighters. Never could figure out what those judges were smoking. Just to
jog your memory, Tom Peashe, that was the year of the Rat. Remember?

nope... hardly ever forget... that Legion show was one of the most
competitive ever upstate... with the top 4 being Utica Yankees, Frankfurt
Starlighters, St. Joe's, and Statesmen...

with so many friends that marched that day... I will only say the results
were "controversial" and that Frankfurt's performance that day was one of my
fondest memories...

I stand by what I said about St. Joe's being the best pre DCI junior corps
in NY State - and that happened during numerous seasons..

As for the judging that day, who could forget the famous "screwed by Alden
Miller" T shirts that Crusaders had. I believe that day was the only time
Brigs beat them in 1964... and only a short time later Cru became the first
corps to beat Hawthorne Caballeros in many many contests...

It WAS an interesting day...

Being in both St.Joe's from 66 to the corps folded in 72...then on to the
Purple Lancers from 72-75, I will attest to both of organizations as being
among the elite "upstate" junior corps in NYS. While St.Joe's was always in the
national finals of VFW< AL< WORLD OPEN CYO....etc., Auburn had just begun to
blossom as one of the top 12 corps.

In Comparison...St. Joe's always could play the horns, and the drumline was in
fact one of the best in the country, marching was never a strength for the
corps from Batavia. Auburn probably matched up in brass with an extremely
difficult musical program, marching was probably better than St. Joe's, but
drums didnt quite match up.

Both were the states representives in national competiton, while the fine metro
corps never seemed to travel too far west.

A blast from the past...1967 New York Kingsmen in the orange and white spanish
uniforms! Scared everyone from Upstate in State Competition at The old
"rockpile" in Buffalo. They were a little pissed off after that show!

Well, since you opened THAT can of worms.....

Listen to Skyliners in the early 70's, although their sops weren't bad in the
mid 60's either.

FWIW, I don't think the Brassmen soprano line was ever exceptional.
