"OH BOY. . or girl"

I think this is WAY too much information that we need on dear Alexa.
Especially about her schooling (and I am not referring to anyone here,
just that this became a concern issue a while back). Information on
where she can be located is not needed. Let's keep stuff like that
out of the newsgroup. You never know who's out there that may cause
her harm.

I feel like a stiff for saying that, but I just fear for her safety.
Billy certainly doesn't need another heartache.

Mandy,

I agree with you, however, many people on this newsgroup may not know
about the massive stir-up that this type of thing caused a couple of months ago
-- resulting in a posted "caution" by Maritime that authorities at Alexa's
school had been notified and that Billy and Alexa really needed to be left to
their privacy. So, by saying this, I'm telling those who read here what you
are referring to. We don't need to get too deep into the "Alexa" subject, for
her own sake.

I understand what you mean, and I've read that post. My Aunt is a teacher out
in East Hampton, NY and there's at least about 7 schools she could go to
within Billy's area. Besides I too have read were it stated that she goes to
a public school. Also I've read in articles that Christie has done she's even
told what street they live on. Now tell me that's not scary. it's no secret
there's not private schools out in that area anyway. Besides Christie herself
has said that Alexa has played the violin and xylophone in the school
orchestra. So it isen't this person who gave this information away he/she
must have gotten it from some article or something, because I too have read
some of the stuff that was posted in other sources that have been done, about
either Billy or Christie. And what could it hurt to tell what grade the kids
in. That can't hurt anybody.

We should leave Billy and Christie's daughter alone. And I disagree, I
think it is scary. There are too many nuts in this world. I'm sure the
person at DMV who gave out Rebecca Schaffer's address didn't think the nut
would go over there and kill her!!! That to me is SCARY. Maybe I'm being
extreme, but I know I'm very protective about my kids and when your a
celebrity I'm sure your even more cautious, even though you try to give the
kid a normal life you don't sacrifice their safety. Keep the newsgroup on
Billy and leave Alexa alone!!! Eileen :I

I think this is nuts because We should not be worried over the safety of this

articles were Christie's been interviewed and she has actually given the
street that they live on. So if it's anyone who should be worried about that
child it should not be us on this newsgroup, Christie should be more careful
about what she says to people about her kids, ESPEICALLY since she was the
one who said, that she didn't want her kids on the covers of magazines and
talked about, yet were was Alexa on the cover of Redbook, January issue. And
she and Jack were both in the 1996 milk ad with Christie, also she and Jack
were also on the cover of Ladies Home Journal in July of 1996 with Christie I
think?. She complains about her kids being talked about and yet she's the one
doing all the talking.

I think that Billy and Maritime would appreciate our efforts if we ended this
thread. He's an extremely protective father ... and Alexa is the love of his
life. Let's let the father-daughter relationship grow and bloom and talk about
Billy here. There is nothing to be gained by continuing to exploit Alexa's
name.

Not to be an ass, but last I remembered, there were to laws governing what can and
can't be discussed in newsgroups. I think that some people are curious about
Billy Joel's daughter, Alexa. I don't think it's that big a deal to wonder what
grade she's in or if she's showing musical talent like her father has. Also, so
what if we discuss her birthday? I'm sure Billy would be happy and proud to know
that we're interested and care. This is NOT exploitation. Now, yes, we shouldn't
be discussing what school she's going to or the route she takes room from school
every day. I think most people in this world realize that.

The point is, we don't need someone coming around preaching to us like we're 8
years old and your our mother.

Oh, by the way, if Billy is such a protective father and doesn't want his
daughter's name exploited, then what's up with the song The Downeaster
'Alexa'???? Hummmmmmmm??????????

I agree that there are general questions we all would like to know the answers
to, but as it has been said many times before, we don't need details on where
they live, or where she goes to school, it's not our business. Just because
that information was given in an interview, doesnt mean we have to spread it
around... this internet thing is way too powerful, it reaches far too many
people, and as was stated before, you don't know who is looking in. Those of
us that respond regularly would never think about doing something terrible, but
who's to say "Big Brother" isn't watching. We all care for Billy AND his
family, so lets stick to arguing about when her birthday is, and not where they
will be celebrating.....

Sorry just had enough of this and I had to put in my two cents.

Nancy,

Thanks. I was gonna respond to t hat guy, but I stopped myself. My
concern was just that people stop the Alexa stuff (at least the personal stuff)
because Maritime reads this NG and the mailing list, and there was a problem in
April on the list wherein a rather extreme fan wanted to visit Alexa's school.
Maritime responded to the list at Billy's request ... here it is in case you
never saw it ... now you'll know why I was trying to quiet this down:

From: MaritmInc
To: owner...@chaos.taylored.com, Dan6971

The following statement is the official response from Maritime Music regarding
Dan6971's posting:

We are writing in response to several postings from Dan6971 which have come to
our attention. Please be advised that although we don’t participate in chat
groups or post regular messages, we do monitor what the rest of you are
saying. In general, our impression is that you are all good people who share
a fun common interest. At Mr. Joel’s instruction and in accordance with his
wishes, we try to accommodate fan requests whenever possible. However, as you
all know, this does not include backstage passes or personal meetings with Mr.
Joel.

What has us particularly worried is the idea that Dan thinks it would be OK to
track down Alexa Joel at school as a means of meeting her father. This is
incredibly disturbing for several reasons. For starters, she is a small child
who is entitled to privacy in her own right. Mr. Joel has made every effort
to ensure that she is not bothered or approached by his admirers. After all,
she did not ask to have famous parents. We can’t think of anything worse than
trying to use a child to get to someone else. Further, no matter how much you
may want to meet Billy Joel, shake his hand or hang out with him, remember
that he is also entitled to privacy, especially when he is with his daughter.
So, our message to Dan and anyone else who thinks this is a good idea is that
we have already notified her school about the possibility of a stranger
calling for schedules or trying to attend school events and that if anyone
attempts to go there, the authorities (police) will be notified. End of
discussion.

Maritime Music, Inc.

Thanks again.

First off Alexa Ray Joel has great musical talent and she's a very creative

first of all like I said before my Aunt teaches out in East Hampton, NY and
there are about 7 different schools she could go to. Besides as long as no
one says what the name of the school is or what street Billy lives on that's
fine. Besides like I also side that this person who wrote this thresd in the
first place must have gotten this stuff from magazines, because I too have
read some stuff about Alexa that Christie thinks it's funny to share. Back in
1994 Christie even gave the name of Alexa's second grade teacher(The article

Billy used her name in the song the Downeaster 'Alexa' because it's about his
38 foot trawler boat that's named after Alexa. And I too agree with Joe that
Billy would be proud that were taking an interest in his family life. And
getting back to her birthday it's JANUARY 1ST, 1986. And I can prove it!

This newsgroup should be about Billy and his music -not about Alexa - so
this is the last time I'll say anything about this and as for when her
birthday is - enough already!!! The only people who know for sure are her
parents since obviously they were THERE for I have seen in print anything
from Dec. 30, 1985 to Jan. 1, 1986. As far as proof goes - what did Billy
and Christie send YOU a birth announcement? Get a life! (that felt
good to get off my chest!) Eileen :)
P.S. - I'm sure she resembles BOTH her parents!!

I've had some people in my family who were musicians, actors, etc., so on
behalf of them, and from my experience, here's what I'd like to say.

When Billy puts out a record, or does a show, that's his JOB. Now, we may all
forget that, but it really is what he does for a living. At the end of the day
when he drives out of the stadium, or finishes a day of signing autographs at
Maritime, he's not working anymore... Billy Joel the singer/songwriter is also
Bill, the family man. (Well, he did say awhile back that he didn't feel like a
"Billy" anymore.) And when Bill goes home every day, he's an ordinary guy just
like us. And he's got a family that really has nothing to do with his
professional life. By Billy drawing on his personal experiences with his
family for inspiration or songwriting, or music videos, or whatever, it's like
a businessman who keeps a photo of his family on his desk.

We can touch Billy Joel the musician, or Billy Joel the rock star, or Billy
Joel with the extravagant tabloid headlines if you believe them... but let's
leave Bill and his family out of it.

I really just think that we should respect Alexa's privacy and let her have as
normal of a childhood as possible. I know that I would be freaking out if a
bunch of people I'd never met knew what school I went to, and really cared

Apparently, she is going into 7th grade and we all know what a rough time that

Respecting her privacy means leaving her alone personally. If anyone
on the newsgroup begins to stalk her, then I'd say we have a problem.

But until then, there's NOTHING wrong with talking about her. Of
course, it's probably not a great idea to give out information such as
what school she goes to or where she lives, but if someone wants to
discuss what he thinks her birthday is, that's FINE. Likewise, if
someone posts an article they found in a magazine about her, everyone
shouldn't throw a fit about it. For god's sake, it was PUBLISHED
ALREADY.

So many of you "claim" that this is supposed to be a newsgroup about
Billy and his music. Isn't Alexa a part of Billy's life?

In short, WHO CARES if someone is posting messages to the newsgroup
about Alexa. It is perfectly normal to be curious about the offspring
or family of a popular icon.

Except for the fact that the majority of people on this NG and Billy Joel

This doesn't make it right.

>It is perfectly normal to be curious about the offspring

True, but it is not normal or acceptable to verbalize a desire to visit said
offspring at school. Plus, I'm sure Billy and everyone else would not have any
problems with "Happy Birthday Alexa" posts, or occasional posts on what she's
up to. It gets extreme when people start asking about the poor kid's school
schedule in hopes of seeing Billy. How do you think Billy would react to
meeting someone in this manner? "Hi, Billy... I've been watching your daugher
get dropped off at school hoping to meet you, and that day has finally come!!"
Can you say, "restraining order?" Give me a freakin' break.

Ok, this post keeps going on and on, so what the heck, I'll post my two
cents.
Yes, Alexa is Billy's daughter, which is unfortunate for her. She and
other celebrity children (think how Chelsea Clinton feels right now!!)
have to deal with mom and/or dad being famous, and sometimes the fame
turns on them.
This is ok, if it doesn't get out of hand. Like it was said
earlier, if u wanna post "Happy Birthday Alexa" at the appropriate time,
discuss how old she is and what grade she's in, that's totally fine.
Now what do I mean by getting out of hand? When it starts to involve
what school she goes to, the location of her after-school activities or
her friends houses, thats gone too far. I'm sorry if this sounds
repetitive, since I'm basically summing up most of the posts. If people
are doing this, whether its to meet Billy or trying to harm Alexa (God
help us all) you just can't, and police will step in if you do.
So there you have it...who's next?-Nick

I'm new to this newsgroup, but since everyone else is replying to this thread, I'll
add my two cents. I'm not going to take sides in this discussion. First: It's not
Alexa's fault that she has a famous dad and an ignorant (what kind of mother would
give out personal information like what street they live on!!!) mother (no offense
meant towards any women reading this thread). Second: Why not just give Alexa her
privacy and respect that? Some people act as if that is a difficult thing.

>Can you say, "restraining order?"

Restraining order would be lucky. I'm sorry, but if I was in Billy's shoes, I
could understand and maybe even justify breaking the guys neck. Remember that
story that Alec Baldwin (anothing Long Islander..) punched a photographer who
followed him and Kim Basinger home to get a photo of the new baby? You know
what? I say good! If those assholes were famous for a day, then they'd
probably hate it too.

Now, in my opinon, here's an example of what I think is appropriate. On
Rolling Stone online, I listened to a RealAudio interview with Billy (the link
is on my site), and the reporter had arranged for a phone call to Billy's
house, and Alexa, in the backround, asked who was on the phone, and Billy
mentioned to the reporter that she was becoming a good pianist. Mentioning
something like that to a newsgroup is fine. In fact, I think it would be
really neat to have two generations of Joels in the music biz. Now, if someone
said, "I know where her piano teacher lives [assuming Billy doesn't teach her],
would you like me to snap a photo of her on the way there" I think that would
be out of line. I think using Alexa in any way to try to get to Billy is out
of line. She's off-limits. No ends, ifs, or buts, and and sorry to anyone who
has a fantasy of marrying her to get into the family, it's just a FANTASY! But
it probably would not be wise to go tell a newsgroup monitored by Billy's
people!

I hate to break this to you (and to all of you, who obviously don't

invasion of her privacy, no matter what you guys think.

I know you all have her (and Billy's) best interests in mind, but you

to the effect of wanting to "watch Alexa at school to try and meet

am, however, sensitive to the fact that there are a lot of loonies out there,
and out of concern for Billy and Alexa, I'm trying to point out the fact that
some of the things which have been said on this NG are simply wrong. Sometimes
even disturbing. It is not an invasion of Alexa's privacy to occasionally post
things like, "I read that Alexa is playing in her school orchestra," or "Alexa
turned 16 today..." It is very intruding to post the location of her school,
her friend's houses, or any kind of daily schedule. Even if the person who is
posting this means no harm, it only takes one twisted person with this
intensely personal information... I mean, does the name Mark David Chapman mean
anything to you?? I don't see why this has to be such an issue for some
people. Just keep postings about the guy's daughter to a minimum and things
will be peachy. I am so sick of this bullshit thread.

Maybe or maybe not. However, Alexa did not ask to be born into a
family that is famous. How would you like to be a young girl and have
your father's (and maybe even mother's) fans trying to get to them any
way they can. . . or maybe even you. Put yourself in her shoes.

>I know you all have her (and Billy's) best interests in mind, but you

Apparently, you haven't been here very long. Someone already did this
past spring, which caused chaos to break out for a short while here on
the newsgroup. The issue got so out-of-hand that Maritime Music
stepped in and responded. Thus, it must be a pretty serious issue if
even Maritime is putting their two cents in, don't you think?

>I'm
>sure Billy can protect his daughter just fine, and doesn't need a

You probably think we are goody-goodies. Well, it's like this. As it
has already been stated there has already been information leaks,
thanks to Christie, about Alexa. Billy wants his daughter to be left
alone. Can't you have enough respect for Billy and his daughter to
not allow information to spill out here about the girl? It is bad
enough that there are people out there, and probably lurking here,
that are trying to track Billy down. They don't need to go through
Alexa to get to him. (I must say that not all lurkers are bad, but
you never know who is "watching.)

Billy can protect Alexa, but only to a point. When he is on tour
(both concerts and lectures) or when he has business across country,
he can not always be there to protect her. Plus, what do you expect
him to do? Be by her side 24/7? With a little help from members on
this group, we certainly can do our part to make sure no harm comes to
her.

Do you really think Billy needs another heartbreak in his life?

I thought that happened on some mailing list? I've been on this newsgroup for
quite awhile now, and I've never seen anyone say they were going to track Alexa
down at school, nor have I ever seen any posts from Maritime regarding this
subject.

bahahahahahaa, if you've EVER mentioned any female in a message, then
you're posting about someone's daughter.

BTW, I never posted anything about Alexa, I'm just responding to the
idiocy that I see here in the newsgroup.

I totally agree with this. However, nobody on this newsgroup has yet
done anything as such, so I don't know why everyone is making such a
big deal out of one post.

Oh I see..... its idiotic to worry about a child's safety, in case you
didn't know there was someone who tried to step over the edge and Maritime
stepped in. would you tell them that they were acting idiotic? Sorry, but
I'm just responding to the idiocy that I see in your posts!!

Ok, before you bash me PERSONALLY (which I have not done to anyone
else), perhaps you should learn the facts.

1. This case that you refer to happened on the Billy Joel MAILING
LIST, NOT THE NEWSGROUP.

2. Nobody on this newsgroup has yet posted anything that could be
considered a concern for Alexa's safety.

3. Everybody has taken it upon themselves to become a crusader for
Alexa's safety just because someone posted a copy of an article that
was PUBLISHED IN A MAGAZINE.

Now that you know the facts, take a minute to think about them, and
STOP trying to get involved in something that really is NOTHING.

In response, nobody has YET posted anything that could be considered a
concern for Alexa's safety - so people are trying to nip things in the bud
before something does happen - is that a CRIME? And sorry, but if I
remember correctly this is a free country and I can get involved if I want
to - the problem today is that noone gets involved. and calling everyone's
posts on this subject that does not agree to you as idoicy is bashing as
well -

I agree. This thread's getting a little out of hand, because it's beginning to get
personal. We are all in agreement that we want the best for Alexa, and I also
have seen no evidence of anyone "posting too far". Those of you concerned about
Alexa's safety can rest assured that all of us will pounce on anyone who
jeopardizes that here.

Now let's DROP IT!

I couldn't agree w/ you more. These people are hurting Billy through his
daughter!!! Billy may have money now but look at the hard life he had to live to
finally get it, let's give him a little happiness by leaving his pride and joy ,
Alexa, alone!!!!!!!!
