The 1962 St. Catherine's Queensmen from St. Alban's, NY
featured what I believe to be one of the best overall Junior
programs for that year. However, they did not attend the VFW
or AL Nationals that year. (Their last, by the way).
My question, for those RAMD contibutors from that era:
Had the Queensmen been able to attend the VFW or AL
Nationals, where do you think they would have placed?
To refresh your memory Chicago won the VFW and Garfield
the AL.

Carmen Cluna drill, Bob Thompson drums. Their repertoire included" Start of
Something Big", "Exodus" and, "Theme From the Apartment". They were so
good, in fact, that they tied Blessed Sac in 1961.
But please don't forget my own long gone Brooklyn corps, "Our Lady of
Loretto Knights" whose instructional staff was the same as that of St..
Cath's, (with the exception of the innovative mind of Don Freising on
drums), and who placed second only to the great St.Kevin's in the previous
year's Dream Contest, (by .7 , part of which was .4 equipmet penalty) . In
the previous year we had also beaten a now faltering, but still
competitive, St Vincent's Cadets five times. And our hornline, (part of
which graduated" to the Skyliners in 1963, and provided them with an influx
ofmore than a dozen gifted musicians), not only looked like the
Skyliners-only in orange and black-but sounded like them in style and
volume--very "New York" with Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Broadway show tunes.
It was sad that both these corps--as well as the very entertaining
Selden Lancers--never lasted long enough to really get out to the big
national shows to truly establish themselves as contenders. In both cases,
the problem was financial--not everyone was as fortunate as Garfield in
sponsorship. But had these twocorps the chance to make it to the Nationals
that year......................stuf that those of us who lived it will
always speculate about. BTW EXCELLENT POST for us very oldtimers!

PS I went to the CABS...we won the Nationals for the next two

VERY HIGH with out question they were unbelievable however i don't think
they were giving the powers of the day a run . Forgive me please if i'm
wrong' but they only managed a tie with Golden Knights , an awsome fete
don't get me wrong ,and i don't think they ever beat the Cavies. They were
beating Garfield and Vinnie's So who knows . interesting question
............ I was there when they were disqualifid for not wearing there
uniforms in the rain at the states ( NY} Remember those UNIFORMS
,,,,,,,,,,man they were beauiful . Years latter Bobby Thompson brought
the arrangment of Dancing Serinade to my junior corp, OLPH Ridgemen, and i
remember how honered we were to have it . Played it for two years and tryed
hard to do it justice .
Their horn book was very demanding even by todays standards and
i'm not sure if they could have cleaned it enough to compete with Chicagos
minimalist , but smart , approch to programming

Chicago who? Da Bears? For the many who don't remember this time,
it was the Cavaliers. (their second of three in a row)
The Cavaliers of course, are not the only corps from Chicago to win
a major title.

Sorry, growing up in the East "Chicago" was the identifier
for the Cavaliers, the Royal Airs were, well, the Royal Airs,
and the Vanguard was "Skokie". BTW, in 1962, the Royal Airs
placed second to the Cavaliers. In 1965, it was the exact
opposite. How about that for a crosstown rivalry!
