Anyway, took it home and of course put it in my Gamecube GBA player (the ONLY
way to play GBA games if ya can!). This version of Space Invaders is EXTREMELY
SIMILER to the Nintendo 64 version. So if ya like the N64 Space Invaders, you
will surely like the GBA version. But let's move on to what's really relevant
to this newsgroup...
What sets the GBA version apart from the other is that it contains a "CLASSIC
MODE" - Everything looks to be "perfect" at first glance, but there are some
glaring flaws... First off, there is no "attract mode", you choose classic, you
play, and you go back to the main menu and that's IT. No turning the "Y" around
or anything. Another ODD thing is that the sound of the marching invaders never
changes. It starts medium, speeds up a little bit, slows down, speeds up a
little bit, etc. -- no matter how many invaders are on the screen - there is
nothing "in synch" about the background noise and the invaders.. Very odd
indeed. Even when you are down to your LAST INVADER, you are hearing the same
sound as a full screen. Other that that though, this seems to be a very
entertaining game --- Buggy and interesting enough to be a "must have" for
classic gamers if you know what I mean. I did get a kick out of it. And it is
the only "full" version to play on the go really.
In closing, I just want to say that when playing Game Boy/Advance games on the
GBA player, you really can sometimes forget that it's a GBA game you're
playing!!
Space Invaders for Gameboy Advance was an overpriced ($40) Toys R Us
exclusive.
On a related note, if you're a Colecovision fan, Eduardo Mello just released
the Space Invader Collection for it. It's the first time Space Invaders Part
2/Deluxe has ever been ported to a home console EVER. And it's especially
cool since it's on the Colecovision. Since he ported the actual arcade code,
it's pretty much arcade PERFECT in that it has every nuance, every bug, and
every trick you can think of. If it worked in the arcade, it will work on
the Colecovision version. It's perfect. The packaging is very nice as well.
For only $25, I highly recommend it if you're a Colecovision and SPACE
INVADERS fan.

And by the way.. I have the GBA Space Invaders. It's sort of fun.. nothing
special. And the "classic" version leaves a lot to be desired. Bottom line,
it's 'ok' but it aint the real Space Invaders.

You'll forgive me, I hope, for chiming in about the "normal" Game Boy
(B&W) version of Space Invaders. If you think you're impressed by the
GBA version, well, you ain't seen nothing yet.
I tend to agree that a GameCube GBA player-like set-up is the only way
to play, and still do most of my GB playing on my old SNES and
SuperGB. And it's here that the original really shines. Though I
didn't waste too many quarters on Space Invaders in the arcade (and I
mean waste -- I stunk at SI back then), the GB version's Super Game
Boy mode was pretty much an exact replica of what I'd remembered. I
can't help but think that SI for the SGB is the only game written
expressly *for the SGB*.
Attract mode is there, down to the invader that comes out and puts a
letter in backwards. There's even an option to emulate the colored
overlay for the cabinet that would make the B&W coin-op "have color"
-- B&W and "true color" modes are also included. The sounds are great
(I'll have to check on the speed issue you mention; haven't played in
a while), and reminded me of some old-time arcade action where you'd
always hear SI going off in the background as you Skeeballed or played
Atari's Fire Truck (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=F&game_id=7814)
or some such.
The SGB extensions to the B&W GB's SI (boy, there's a fed gov't-worthy
string of acronyms!) really make that game a must-have. It's a shame
the game on the GB (without the SGB) stinks, however. But if you
really must have SI done right on your big screen -- from a small
cart, even -- it sounds like there's still no better version than the
original SI for the Game Boy. Course it doesn't play so well on the
go. Too bad the GBA doesn't do SGB.
-- As a quick aside, I forgot to bring SI up the last time I was near
a GBA player. I'm betting it doesn't do Super GB extensions. Anybody
know for sure?
Thanks for the post,

I didn't realize this. Mine didn't come with a box since it was used. It's a
pretty expensive used game as well by the way...
Yes, not only that, but the full version is also on the Game Boy (regular) via
the Super Game Boy... I was kind of shocked after buying the SNES version that
the exact same thing was a FREEBIE on the Game Boy cart!

Right you are! It even has the background graphics.

And the regular gameboy too, don't forget...

Now how are you going to port arcade code from the arcade to a home console?
And if so, why weren't they doing this in 1983??
I think somehow that DONKEY KONG had some extras for the SGB, but I'm not sure.
>It's a shame
>the game on the GB (without the SGB) stinks, however.
No. No, not really, it's a pretty nice port. There is like 1 row less invaders
or something, but it's still a fun game to play. I play it on the GBA player in
full screen mode still for a little variety.

Sadly, it does not :(
But it's a good excuse to buy a SNES and a GBA anyway since they are so cheap
and no serious gamer should be without one :)
Yeah sorry my mistake, that's actually the one I'm talking about. :)
I can't remember anymore if those carts were GB, "SGB" or CGB.. I guess
they're all the same to me since you can play em all pretty much universally
:-P
Donkey Kong (and some others) were also Super Game Boy enhanced.
However, in DK's case, that only means a custom frame (or whatever
it's called) and, IIRC, a custom pallette with more than four colors.
I know it was custom, but forget for sure how many colors it had.
SGB Space Invaders blew me away the first time I turned it on. I
can't say for sure whether any other SGB-enhanced carts had completely
different SGB content like it, but would tend to doubt it, given the
simple nature of GB SI compared to other GB games.

I agree more with the previous poster. I wasn't impressed with Space
Invaders for the GB. I understand there are technical issues with the
screen resolution, but it still could have been better. I was even
less impressed with it after playing the SGB version.
