Tape 1 A Mother and Her Young Learning English

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 1: wake up in the morning
(Mrs. Lee, a Korean housewife, decides to teach English to her son Minsu. She
will nickname minsu “Michael” from now on. So she also decides to speak only
English to him.)
Michael, it is time to wake up.
Huh?
Yes, it is time to wake up. And, also, from now on I will speak only English to
you. And you should speak only English to me, too.
Okay, mom.
Right. That’s good.
It will be hard at first, but I think I can do it.
I know you can do it.
I will do my best.
That is great. All I want is for you to do your best in everything you do.
Mom, what time is it?
It is seven o’clock in the morning.
Seven o’clock? I have to go to school by eight.
Yes, so come and eat your breakfast.
Okay, I will wash my face, brush my teeth, and then I will eat breakfast.
Don’t forget to wash your hands, too.
Mom, when I wash my face, I am also washing my hands.
That’s true. Okay, then don’t forget to brush your hair.
I won’t. I always brush my hair before I go to school.
You’ve never brushed your hair or your teeth before? When did your start?
Mom, now that I’m in middle school, I have a girl friend. So now I have to look
good.
A girlfriend? When I was in middle school I never thought of boys.
I know, Mom. You told me – twenty times.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 2: Eating breakfast

(Michael goes into the kitchen and sits down at the table. His mom and
dad are already there.)

Michael, what do you want for breakfast?
I would like some cereal, please.
Cereal? Wouldn’t you still be hungry?
Dad, you’re speaking English, too?
Yes, you mother said it would help you. So I am speaking English, too.
It feels strange speaking English to you, Dad.
Don't worry about that. What you should worry about is your breakfast. How can
you eat only cereal?
It is not only cereal. He will be eating it with milk.
That doesn’t matter. I don’t think only milk and cereal is enough. You also
need to eat some rice and kimchi.
Dad, young don’t like kimchi for breakfast.
Yes, dear, you know Michael doesn’t like spicy food in the morning.
When I was young, we ate kimchi three times a day and liked it. And if d don’t
eat rich I would be still hungry.
You always say that, Dad. But grandpa said you only liked bread and chocolate.
That’s not true.
Well, that’s what grandpa said.
Michael, it is seven-thirty. You will be late.
Okay, let me eat this cereal, and then I’ll catch the bus at seven-forty-five.
Hurry up.
And tomorrow you should eat some lice.
Dad, that’s not right. It’s “rice” with an “R”, not “lice” with and
“L”. And, I’ll eat some rice today.
You will? Good. Here, have some right now.
No, dad, I’ll eat it for lunch and dinner. I just don’t like it or breakfast.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 3: going to school
(Michael finishes his breakfast and then walks to bus stop. A little while later
a school bus comes and he gets o it. On the bus he meets his friend, Andy)
Andy, how are you?
Huh?
No, not “huh?” you should say, “what?”
What?
That’s better. Let’s speak in English.
Okay, but why?
Well, my mom decided that the best way to learn English is to practice it all
the time.
Everybody knows that.
Yes, everybody knows it, but nobody does it. So we are going to do it.
It sounds like a good idea.
It’s a great idea. Maybe we should tell our friends and teachers about it.
Maybe. But we should think about it first.
You’re right. Let’s think about it before we decide.
What are you doing at lunch time?
I don’t know. Why?
We can talk about it more then.
That’s a good idea. Let’s talk about it more at lunch time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 4: back at home

(Mr. And Mrs. Lee are still back at home. They are talking about the idea of
speaking only English.)

I am not sure that speaking only English is a good idea.
Why not?
Well, I’m worried that Michael will forget Korean.
That is impossible.
No, it’s not.
Of course it is. Even if we speak English to Michael, he will watch Korean
television, listen to Korean songs, and go to Korean school. How can he forge?
You’re right. I don’t have to worry. But why are speaking English to each
other?
Because if we don’t speak English, then Michael won’t either.
But y English is not very good.
Yes it is. And it will get better if you speak it more.
That is true. And even though it will be difficult, I will do it for my son.
Thank you. I knew you would understand.
That is what parents are for. It is our job to help him.
Yes.
(Mrs. Lee looks at the clock.)
what time do you have to go to work?
By nine o’clock. Why?
Well, it’s already eight-fifteen.
Oh. I should go.
Good-bye. See you tonight.
Good-bye. I’ll be home by seven.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 5: a telephone call
(Mrs. Lee makes a telephone call to Andy’s mother, Mrs. Cho.)
hello. May I please speak with Mrs. Cho?
This is she. May I ask who is calling?
Yes, it’s Mrs. Lee, Michael’s mother.
Oh, hello. How are you?
I’m fine, thank you. How have you been?
Fine, thank you. May I ask you a question?
Of course.
Why are we speaking in English?
Oh, yes. I am trying to teach English to Michael by speaking only English to
him. Then I remembered that you majored in English literature in college. So I
was wondering if you would help me.
I would be happy to help you. But I graduated from college fifteen years ago. My
English is not very fluent.
Then it will be good practice for you, too.
That’s true. And it will be great for Andy. He really wants to improve his
English.
I am so happy. Thank you so much.
You are very welcome.
By the way what are you doing this afternoon?
I have no plans. Why?
Well, I’m going to go to the supermarket. Would you like to go with me?
Yes. That would be great. I need to go grocery shopping, too.
I will drive my car. What time should I pick you up?
How is two o’clock?
Perfect. I’ll see you then.
Okay, see you then.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 6: grocery shopping

(Mrs. Lee drives her car to Mrs. Cho’s house then they drive together to the
supermarket.)

Sorry I’m late.
That’s okay. It’s only two-ten.
Yes, but it’s cold outside. I’m sorry.
No, really, it is no problem. where are we going grocery shopping?
Let’s go to the LG Supermarket.
It’s really nice. The prices and the services are very good.
(They arrive at the LG Supermarket, park the car, and go inside.)
Wow, this really nice. They have everything.
Yes, they do have a very good selection. What do you need to buy today?
Today I need to buy vegetables.
What vegetables are you going to buy?
I’m going to buy lettuce, mushrooms, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, and garlic.
But tomato is not a fruit, it ‘s a vegetable.
Oh, really? I didn’t know that. What are you going to buy?
My husband really likes meat, so I have to buy a lot of meat
What kind of meat are you going to buy?
I’m going to buy pork ribs beef steaks, ad chicken breasts.
Oh, I almost forgot. I am also going to buy some shrimp, crab, and tuna.
That’s a lot of meat, and a lot of seafood.
Yes, but my family eats a lot.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 7: At a Cafe
(Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Cho finish their shopping and decide to go to a cafe to talk
some more.)
Going to a cafe was a great idea. I have almost no time to rest during the day.
I understand how you feel. That is why I go to a cafe for one hour every day. It
gives me a chance to rest, to think, and sometimes, to talk.
Yes, I think resting and talking are bot very important. Especially when you are
always busy.
Why don’t we order first?
That’s a good idea. Let’s order. Waiter!
Excuse me.
Yes, may I take your order?
Yes I would like an espresso, please.
I am coffee.
Oh, that’s a Korean expression. You should say, “I’ll have a coffee.”
Thank you. I didn’t know that. I’ll have a coffee, please.
One espresso and one coffee, would you like anything else?
No, thank you.
Uhm, actually, could I also have a piece of cake?
Of couse. I’ll get that for you now.
I like cake too, but I’m on a diet.
Why? You’re so thin.
My husband says I need to lose weight.
That’s funny.
Why?
Because my husband always says I need to gain weight. He thinks I’m skinny.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 8: Lunch at School

(Back at school, Michael and Andy are eating lunch together.)

Michael, did you speak English in your classes?
I tried to, but some of the wouldn’t let me.
Me too. When spoke English in my Korean language class, the teacher it my hands
with a stick.
Yeah, that happened to me, too. But it was my math teacher who hit me. He said
we live in Korea and we should speak only Korean.
Really? I didn’t think anyone still thought like that.
I know, but they do. There are still many people who think that Koreans cant
speak English well. But I think if you practice, you can speak English very
well.
I think you are right.
Of course I am. I am very smart.
I know but I am even smarter.
Do you think so?
Yes I do. Why? Don’t you agree with me?
No. I think I am smarter than you. Why don’t we make a bet?
Okay. What is the bet?
Ten thousand won.
Okay. How will we know who is smarter?
Let’s see who gets a higher score on the next English test.
It’s a bet.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 9: Back at home
(Michael goes home and talks to his mother about school.)
Mom, I had a great day at school.
Really? You usually hate school.
I know, but today was different.
Why? What was different about it?
Today I spoke only English and I had a lot of fun.
Did your teacher understand?
Yes, they all understand. Well, actually, one got mad and hit me.
Who was it? I will talk to him.
No. Don’t worry about it. He only hit my hands.
All right, if you say so. But it still makes me mad. By the way, who did you
speak English with?
I spoke English with Andy. Do you remember him?
Of course I remember him that is so funny.
Why is it funny?
Because I met Andy’s mother today, and we decided to speak English, too.
Really? But Andy’s mother was an English major in college. Can you speak
English with her?
Why not? Even if her English is better than mine, I can still practice.
That’s true. Wow, Mom, you are really smart.
No, I’m not smart. But I have lived a long tie, so I understand life a little
better than you. That’s all.
Anyway I always learn a lot from you.
I’m happy to hear that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 10: Telephone conversation

(Mrs. Lee decided to call Mrs. Cho on the phone and talk more about their
children and about English. The telephone rings and Mrs. Cho answers.)

Hello.
Hello, may I please speak with Mrs. Cho?
This is she. Is that you Mrs. Lee?
Yes. How did you know?
You have a very unique voice.
Is that good or bad?
Good. Of course. Your voice is soft and you are always very polite.
Oh, thank you.
You’re welcome. By the way, why did you call?
Oh, yes, I wanted to talk about Andy and Michael. Michael told me they are
speaking only English to each other.
Yes, Andy told me.
What do you think about that? Do you think it’s a god idea?
I think it’s a fine idea. We are speaking English to each other. So it’s also
good if our children do the same.
That makes sense. As usual, you are right.
Why don’t we take the two boys to the movies this weekend? If they see a
foreigh movie they can practice their listen, too.
That’s a good idea. How is Saturday?
Sunday is better for me.
Okay, Sunday. What time?
How about three o’clock?
Three is fine. Where shall we meet?
Do you know the Kinema theater?
I’m not sure.
It’s very near the Galleria Department Store in Apkujongdong.
Oh, yes, I know it. It has King Kong hanging from it, right?
Right. That’s the one.
See you then, good-bye.
Good-bye.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 11: Mrs. Cho and Andy
(After talking on the phone with Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Cho talks to Andy.)
Andy, do you have any plans for Sunday?
No, Mom, why?
Well, Mrs. Lee and I decided to take you and Michael to the movies.
Cool. Which theater are we going to?
We are going to meet them at the Kiema Theater.
Okay. But what movie are we going to see?
You should watch a movie in English to practice your English listening
That's true. But even the movies in English all have Korean subtitles.
Well, you’ll just have to not read them. Do you promise?
I promise what movie are we going to see?
I was thinking about “The Beach”.
“The Beach”? isn’t Leonardo DiCaprio in that?
Yes, he is. Isn’t he handsome?
Handsome? He looks like a girl. I hate him.
But wasn’t he handsome in “Titanic”?
He was stupid I “Titanic”. He’s so skinny, just like a little girl.
Okay, we can see something else. How about “Sleepy Hollow”?
That’s better. Johnny Depp is in movie. He was so cool in the movie, “Dead
Man”.
Great, then we’ll watch “Sleepy Hollow”
Thanks, Mom.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 12: Mr. Lee comes Home from Work

(Mr. Lee comes home form work and he, Mrs. Lee and Michael talk about their
day.)

honey, I’m home.
Hello, dear. How was your day?
It was okay, but I’m very tired. Is Michael here?
Yeah, Dad, I’m right here.
Hi, son how was school today?
It was al right. I spoke English all day long and only got hit oce.
Who hit you?
I’ll tell you later, dear.
Yeah, Dad, let’s talk about that later.
If you say so, son.
I met with Mrs. Cho. You know Andy’s mother, don’t you?
Of course I do. What did you two do?
They went shopping.
What? I hope you didn’t spend a lot of money.
Don’t worry, we only went grocery shopping. We didn’t go clothes shopping.
Are you sure you didn’t spend any more money?
Well, we did go to a cafe after we went shopping.
How much was it?
Only ten thousand won for bot of us.
What did you have, Mom?
I had coffee and a piece of cake I am trying to gain weight because your father
thinks I am too skinny.
You ate some cake? Why didn’t you say so? That’s good. You are too skinny. You
need to some weight.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 13: Dinner
(After they finish talking, the whole family eats dinner together.)
all this talk about cake is making me hungry. What’s for dinner?
Yeah, Mom, what’s for dinner tonight?
Tonight I made Pulgogi.
That sounds good. What do you think, Michael?
That sounds great. Pulgogi is my favorite food.
Yesterday you side kalbi was your favorite. Which one is it?
I like them both. Is it okay to have tow favorites?
No. Favorite manes the one you like best. I think it’s okay to have more than
on favorite.
Mom, all your food is my favorite. You’re the world’s best cook.
That’s true. You make een better food than my mother.
Better than grandma? Wow. Dad, I thought you said grandma was the best cook.
She was. But now your mother is.
Thank you, dear. But don’t say that in front of your mother. She’ll be upset.
And michael, don’t you tell grandma, either.
I won’t. I promise. But I’m really hungry. Can we eat now?
Oh, I’m sorry. Of course we can eat now. Here’s the pulgogi. Help yourself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 14: Watching TV

(After dinner, the family goes into the living room to watch TV together.)

Michael, what do you want to watch?
I really like “Bay Watch”. Can we watch it?
That depends. Have you finished your homework?
Yes. I finished it as soon as I came home.
Are you sure?
Yes. If you don’t believe me just ask Mom.
Well, dear. Did he finish his homework?
Yes, he did. Michael has been a very good student these days.
I told you, Dad. Now can we watch “Bay Watch”?
I’m not sure. What is the show about?
It’s about the beach.
Dear, you know that show with all the pretty young girl wearing bathing suits.
Oh, that show. Um, yes of course you can watch that show. Why don’t we watch it
together?
Great. Do you like that show too, Dad?
Well, I was born in Kangwon-do so I spent a lot of time at the beach when I was
young.
Is that the only reason you like it, Dad.
Well….um….
It’s all right, dear. I know ou watch that show.
You do?
Yes. I do.
And it’s okay?
Yes, it’s okay.
So tell me the truth, Dad. Why do ou like that show?
The truth? Pamela Anderson is so beautiful. I love watching her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 15: Going to Bed
(After “Bay Watch” ends it is time for Michael to go to bed.)
Michael, it’s eleven o’clock. It’s your bed time.
Mom, can I stay up until twelve? I’m in seventh grade now.
I know you are. But your bed time is still eleven. Now be a good boy and go to
sleep.
What if Dad says I can stay up until twelve?
If your father says it’s okay, then it’s okay with me, too. But remember,
he’s the one who decided on eleven.
Dad, can I stay up until twelve?
When you are in high school.
High school? But, Dad, that’s two years from now. I can’t wait that long.
Okay, maybe next year, if you study hard.
Really? Thanks Mom. I promise I’ll study hard. I’ll get all “A”s. I promise.
I hope you do get all “A’s. That would be wonderful.
That would e great. If you get all “A’s. I’ll buy you a new bike, too.
Do you promise?
Yes, I promise. But right ow you still have to go to bed.
But, Dad.
No buts! Go to bed right now!
Yes, sir.
Sweet dreams.
Thanks, Mom.
Good night, son.
Good night, Dad.
(Michael goes into his bedroom.)
Do you think I was too strict.
No. Michael is a teenager. He needs you to be strict with him.
Okay, if you say so. Thank you, Dear.
You’re welcome. And you’re a good father and a good husband.
Don't worry about our son. He is a good boy and I bet he really will get all
Tape 2 A Father and His Doughter Go To America
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 1: Talking About America

(Mr. Park, a Korean father, decides to go to American with his daughter Su-mi.
To get ready to go to America, he also thinks it would be good if they speak
only in English.)

Su- mi, would you like to go to America?
What?
I asked you if you want to go to America with me. I will go next Tuesday. I
think you will learn a lot if you go with me.
Dad, of course I want to go with you, but why are you speaking English to me?
Well, next Tuesday is only five days from now. If we are going to America we
should practice our English every day.
That is a good idea, Dad. If we speak English together until next Tuesday,
speaking English in America will be easier.
That’s right. So do you promise?
Yes, Dad, I promise to speak only English until next Tuesday.
No, you must promise to speak only English until the week after next Tuesday.
Why?
Because we will be in America for one week and you have to speak only English
until we come back to Korea.
Yea, I promise.
That’s a good girl.
Is Mom going with us?
No, your mother has to stay here and take care of your younger brother.
So Tae- gyun is staying in Korea with Mom?
Yes, your brother Tae-gyun is only twelve years old. He doesn’t know much
English yet.
But I am only fifteen years old.
I know, but that means you have already learned English in school. Now I want
you to practice your English with me and with people in America.
Okay, Dad. But I don’t think Mom and Tae-gyun are going to be happy.
Don’t worry. I will explain it to your mother and your brother.
Okay, Dad. Good luck.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 2: Explaining to Mrs. Pak and Tae- gyun
(Mr. Pak and Su-mi go into the living room. Mrs. Pak and her son Tae-gyun are
there watching television.)
Um, I have something I want to tell you.
Okay, but why are you telling me in English?
Well, that is what I want to tell you. Su-mi and I are going to America next
week. That is why I am practicing my English.
What? You are going where?
We are going to visit America. I want Su-mi to see America and practice her
English.
And when did you decide this?
I decided last week.
And why didn’t you tell me?
Well, I wasn’t sure until just now.
Why not?
Because I just asked Su-mi?
And what did she say?
I said yes. I really want to visit America. Please.
I don’t know.
It would be a very good chance for to practice her English and to see many new
things, too.
Yeah, Mom, it would be a good chance. Please let me go.
What about Tae-gyun? It’s not fair if only Su-mi goes.
Yeah, what about me? I want to go to.
What? Where did you learn English? You are only twelve.
Dad, now we learn English even in elementary school. I started learning English
two years ago.
Okay, Tae-gyun , I promise to take you to America next year. But this year, only
Su-mi and I will go.
Okay.
And what about me? When will I go to America?
I don’t know, but I will buy you a present.
That sounds good. I want a Burberry’s coat.
But those are very expensive.
If you don’t buy me a coat, you cannot go to America.
Okay, you win. I will buy you a Burberry’s coat.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 3: Talking about the vacation.

(Su-mi goes home and talks to her father about their vacation.)

Dad, I want to talk to you about our trip.
Okay, what do you want to talk about?
I want to talk about where we will go.
Well, my sister, your aunt, lives in Los Angeles. So I thought we would go there
first.
Great! Then can we go to New York, Boston and San Francisco?
I don’t know. We will be there only for a week. And New York and Boston are
very far from Los Angeles. But I think we can go to San Francisco.
Okay, what about Yellowstone Park and the Grand Canyon? Can we go there, too?
I don’t know about Yellowstone, it’s also very far. But the Grand Canyon is
pretty close to L.A., so maybe we can go there.
That’s great. I am going to see L.A., San Francisco, and the Grand Canyon.
I said “maybe”. I cant promise you anything. First, we have to go there and
ask your aunt about travelling inside the Unite States.
I know, Dad, but I am still very happy and excited about this trip
Good. I know we will have fun wherever we go.
Yes, but we will have more fun if we go to more places.
That’s true. I will try my best to visit San Francisco and the Grand Canyon.
Thanks. Dad. You’re the best.
Well I still be the best if we only go to Los Angeles?
Of course. You’ll always be the best dad to me.
And you will always be the prettiest daughter to me.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 4: Going to the Airport
(Next Tuesday comes and Mr. Pak and Su-mi are going to the airport)
Su-mi, are you ready to go?
Almost. I’ll be ready in five minutes.
Okay, I am going to say good-bye to your mother and brother.
(Mr. Pak goes into the livingroom where Mrs. Pak and tae-gyun are waiting.)
Su-mi and I will be leaving in about five minutes. Don’t worry Tae-gyun, we
will go next year.
And next year I will get a Burberry’s scarf to go with my coat.
No, next year you can go with us.
What if I don’t want to go?
Then I will buy you anything you want.
I want to go. I don’t want a present.
Okay, I’m ready. Let’s go.
(Su-mi goes to her mother and brother.)
mom, we will be back in one-week, don’t worry. Tae-gyun, you be good and listen
to Mom.
Yes, listen to your mother. We will see you in one week. Good-bye.
Good-bye.
(Mr. Pak and Su-mi go out of the house and get in their car.)
let’s go.
Yeah, lets go to America.
Well, first we have to go to the airport. Do you kknow the name of our airport I
English.
Yes, it’s called Kimpo.
That’s right, but its full name is Kimpo International Airport.
Okay, then let’s go to Kimpo International Airport, and then to Los Angeles
International airport.
Very good you learn quickly.
Of course I do. I am your daughter.
That’s true. I am pretty smart too. So you should thank me for your
intelligent.
Thanks, Dad, for my intelligence, and for this vacation.
You are welcome for the vacation, but I really think you should thank your
mother for your intelligence. She is much smarter than I am.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 5: At the Airport

(Mr. Pak and Su-mi arrive at Kimpo International Airport and get ready to go.)

we are here. Let’s go get our tickets.
What? We don’t have tickets yet?
Yes, we have tickets, but I bought them on the internet. Now we have to get
them.
Okay, where do we have to go to get them?
Well, we are flying Asiana Airlines, so we should go to the Asiana ticket
window.
Good. Let’s go.
(Mr. Pak and Su-mi go to the Asiana ticket window.)
hello, may I help you?
Yes, please. My name is Pak Chun-hyok and this is my daughter Pak Su-mi. We are
travelling to Los Angeles today, and want to get our tickets.
Please wait, sir.
(The Asiana employee looks at the computer.)
yes, Mr. Pak, I have two tickets for you. Here you are. Have a nice trip.
Thank you very much. Have a nice day.
(Mr. Pak takes his ticket and gives the other ticket to SU-mi.)
Here is your ticket. Don’t lose it.
Thanks, Dad.
You are welcome. Let’s go to the restaurant and wait for our airplane. There
are still two hours before we leave.
That sounds good. I am thirsty.
(Mr. Pak and Su-mi go to the restaurant inside the airport.)
hello, may I take your order.
Yes, I would like a cup of coffee, please.
No, you’re too young to drink coffee.
Okay, one hot cocoa, please.
One cop of coffee and one cup of hot cocoa, would you like anthing else?
No, thank you.
Dad, can I have a sandwich, too?
Are you hungry?
Yes, I am very hungry.
Okay, you can have a sandwich, too.
All right, then I will get your drinks now; your sandwich will ready in a few
minutes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 6: On the Airplane
(Mr. Pak and Su-mi finish their drinks and food. they are now ready to get on
the airplane.)
it’s twelve o’clock. Our plane leaves at twelve-thirty. I think we should get
on it.
Okay, where do we go to get on the plane?
Our plane leaves form gate number six, so we have to go there.
(Mr. Pak and Su-mi go to gate nmuber six.)
here it is, Dad, gate munber six.
Yes, let’s get on the airplane.
(At the gate an Asiana employee is taking tickets.)
good afternoon, may I have your tickets?
Dad, do you have the tickets?
Yes, here they are.
Thank you, sir. You are in seats number twenty-nine A and twenty-nine B.
Thank you very much.
Yes, thanks a lot.
You are very welcome. Have a nice trip
(Mr. Pak and Su-mi go to take their seats.)
these are great seats we are close to the window and the bathroom.
Dad, can I sit by the window?
Of course you can.
Thanks. I want to see Seoul from the air.
That’s a good idea. You can also see Los Angeles from the air later.
Hey, that’s a good idea, too. Dad, how long is the flight from Seoul to L.A.?
I think it takes ten hours.
Ten hours? That is a really long time!
Yes, it is. But you can watch two free movies.
Two free movies? That’s great. Two movies take four hours, so we will only have
to wait six more hours.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 7: Arriving in Los Angels

(Mr. Pak and Su-mi finish their flight and arrive in Los Angels.)

Su-mi, how was the flight?
It was long and boring, but the movies were fun.
Really? I don’t know because I was asleep most of the time.
Where do we go now?
Now we have to go through immigration.
Immigration, what’s that?
Immigration is where they check your passport. Don’t worry, it’s very esy.
Okay, I won’t worry if we can go through immigration together.
(Su-mi and Mr. Pak go to immigration together.)
Hello, may I please see your passports?
Yes, here they are.
Is she your daughter.
Yes, she is.
What will you do in America?
We are going to see Los Angeles and San Francisco.
And where will you be staying?
My sister lives in L.A. . We will be staying at her house.
All right. I hope you have a nice trip.
Thanks.
No, Su-mi, you should say “Thank you, sir.” It’s more polite.
Oh, I’m sorry. Thank you, sir.
You are very welcome.
(Mr. Pak and Su-mi go out of immigration and meet with Mr. Pak’s sister, Mrs.
Kim.)
Chun-hyok, it is so good to see you. And Su-mi, you are so big. How old are you
now?
I am fifteen years old. I was only eleven years old the last time I saw.
Well, you have grown a lot. You are now a young woman. Chun-hyok, you must be
tired. Let’s go to my house.
Yes, I am very tired. Let’s go to your house now.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 8: At Mrs. Kim’s House
(All three of them get in Mrs. Kim’s car and drive to her house.)
Auntie, your house is very cloe to the airport.
Yes, it only took twenty minutes to drive from the airport to your house.
Yes, it is very convenient to live close to the airport. Let’s go inside and
get soething to eat.
That sounds great. I’m really hungry.
(All three of them go into Mrs. Kim’s house.)
What would you like to eat?
I would like some kimch’i chige and rice.
No, Dad, we are in America. We should eat American food.
She is right. You can eat rice and kimch’i every day in Korea. How about eating
some pizza?
I know, but American pizza is different from Korean pizza. Why don’t you try
it?
Yeah, dad, I want to try American pizza.
All right, you win. We’ll try American pizza.
Thanks, Dad.
Jimmy will be coming home soon so we should order two large pizzas. Jimmy eats a
lot.
Who is Jimmy?
Jimmy is the American name of your cousin Jin-sok.
Jin-sok is a good name. Why does he need am American name?
He doesn’t need one, but he wanted one.
Dad, I want an American name, too.
No, your name is Su-mi. I gave you that name and you will use it.
What about Sue? Sue is a good American name, and it sounds the same as the first
half of Su-mi.
Yeah, dad, what about Sue?
Sue is okay, but when we go back to Korea, you are Su-mi again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 9: walking in Los Angels

(Mr. Pak and Su-mi decide to go for a walk near Mrs. Kim’s house.)

Are you tired?
No, I feel fine. What about you, Sue?
No, I’m not tired. Why do you ask?
Well, in front of our house there are many nice stores. I thought you might want
to take a walk and see some of them.
Okay, that sounds fun. Do you want to go too, Sue?
Of course I want to go. I love shopping.
Well, I can’t promise you whether you can buy anything or not. So it won’t
really be shopping.
That’s all right. I like window shopping, too.
Okay, let’s go. We’ll come back in about thirty minutes.
Thirty minutes? All right. See you then.
(Mr. Pak and Su-mi go out of the house and go down the street to where there are
many stores.)
Hey, there is a store that sells food and drinks.
Can we go in? I am thirsty.
Yes, I’m thirsty, too.
(Mr. Pak and Su-mi go into the store, but they cannot find the mild. Mr. Pak
asks the man working at the store where it is.)
Excuse me, but where is the “milku”?
I am sorry, what are you looking for?
“Milku.” I want to know where the “milku” is.
I am very sorry, but I can’t understand.
We are looking for some mild.
Oh, milk. Thank you. It is in the back of the store, next to the chess and eggs.
Wow, Sue, your pronunciation is very good. That is the difference between the
old and the new generation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 10: Seeing Los Angeles
(Jimmy comes home and he, MR. Pak, Su-mi, and Mrs. Kim all finish eating the
pizza. Then they decide to see Los Angeles.)
if you want to see L.A., just ask me.
Of course we want to see Los Angeles, but how can you help us?
Uncle, I am eighteen. I can drive a car.
Really? Are you a good driver?
Jimmy is a very good and very safe driver.
Yeah, dad, let’s go with Jimmy oppa and see L.A..
Sue, you don’t have to call me oppa in America. You can just call me Jimmy.
Let’s go.
(They get in the car and begin to drive.)
Where are we going first?
First. We will go to the ocean. The ocean and the beaches here are very famous.
That will be very nice. I love the ocean.
Where will we go after that?
After that we can go to Hollywood.
Cool! Hollywood! Will we see some movie stars?
No. But we will see some movie studios.
What are movie studios?
Dad, movie studios are where movies are made.
How did you know that?
Yeah, Sue, how did you know that?
I saw it on the internet. Before coming to L.A., I look on the internet for
information.
Do you have the internet in Korea, too.
Of course we do. The internet and computers are very popular in Korea.
Yes, even I learned how to use e-mail last year.
Really? How did you learn?
Sue taught me.
And how did Sue learn?
All young people in Korea know about computers. We learn about them in school.
That is enough about computers. Let’s go to the beach.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 11: Meeting Jimmy’s Friend

(Su-mi’s cousin Jimmy takes her to meet his friend Tommy.)

Sue, this my friend Tommy. He is my best friend.
Hello, Tommy, it is very nice to meet you.
Hi, good to meet you, too.
Sue just came here from Korea. She is going to stay for one week.
From Korea? Cool. Where is Korea? Is it in China?
No, Korea is not in China. Korea is between China and Japan.
Oh, sorry. But you speak Chinese, right?
No, of course not. I speak Korean.
Really? I didn’t know that. In America we don’t have many chances to learn
about Korea. Can you tell me some more tings about your country?
Of course. Ask anything you want and I will try to answer as well as I can.
Well, what do you eat in Korea?
We eat a lot of rice and kimch’i.
Kimch’I? Isn’t that really hot and spicy?
Yes, sometimes. But there are many kinds of kimch’i.
Really? I didn’t know that. But if you eat only rice and kimch’I don’t you
get bored?
That is not all we eat. There are hundreds of kinds of Korean food. We eat all
kinds of Korean food. We eat all kinds of meat, fish, and vegetables. And these
days young people also eat pizza, hamburgers, and spaghetti. Seoul is becoming a
very international city.
Wow, I didn’t know that. Is Seoul a big city?
It’s very big. About fourteen million people live there.
Fourteen million?? That’s bigger than L.A.!
Yes, you should come with Jimmy to visit Korea.
Yeah, let’s go to Soul next summer.
I would like that very much.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 12: Going to San Francisco
(The next day Mr. Pak and Su-mi take an airplane to San Francisco.)
Dad, I am really tired. I don’t want to fly again.
Sue, don’t worry. This flight is only one hour, not ten.
Oh, that’s different. One hour is easy.
(One hour later they arrive in San Francisco. They leave the airport and catch a
taxi.)
Where to?
Excuse me?
Where do you want to go?
Oh, we are going to the Marriott Hotel.
Okay, the Marriott Hotel. Are you here for business.
No, my daughter and I are here for sightseeing.
Well, San Francisco is a wonderful city. What are you going to see?
How long will you be here?
We will only be here for on day.
Oh, that’s not much time. If you only have one day, you should see the Golden
Gate bridge and Golden gate Park.
Yeah, I learned about the Golden gate Bridge in school; I really want to see it.
Okay. Where else should we visit?
You should also visit Chinatown. It is very old and has many good places to eat.
I love Chinese food. My favorite is t’angsuyuk.
What is that? I’ve never heard of it before.
Oh, that is the Korean name for sweet and sour pork.
Sweet and sour pork? That’s my favorite, too.
Okay, why don’t we go to chinatown first? We can lunch there, and then go to
see the Golden gate Bridge.
I know a very good restaurant. Do you want me to take you there?
Yes, please.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 13: Visiting the Grand Canyon

(Mr. Pak and Su-mi finish their trip to San Francisco. The next day they fly to
the Grand Canyon.)

Today we are flying to the Grand Canyon.
Will it only take one hour?
No, it will take abut two hours.
That’s still a lot better than ten hours.
Yes, it is. And if we dove there in a car it would take almost thirteen hours.
Thirteen hours? I could never do that. I am glad we are flying there.
(Mr. Pak and Su-mi arrive at the airport and then take a bus to the Grand
Canyon.)
there it is, the Grand Canyon. What do you think?
It’s so big. I can’t believe it.
Yes, we saw picture of it, but it is too big for a picture.
Who make it?
Not who, but what. What made the Grand Canyon was a river. Can you see that
water at the bottom of the canyon?
Yes, I see it.
Well, that’s the Colorado River. That river flowed for many tens of thousands
of years until it made this canyon.
Wow. But water looks so weak.
I know. But water is very strong.
This is a great vacation, Dad. I am learning a lot of English, and also about
nature and history.
Yes, that is why travelling can be an important part of studying.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 14: Going Back to Seoul
(Mr. Pak and Su-mi finish their trip to the Grand Canyon and are now back in Los
Angels.)
Did you enjoy your trip to San Francisco?
Yes, I enjoyed it very much.
And what about the Grand Canyon?
Oh, I loved that, too.
Which one did you like more?
I liked them both. They were very different, but both very interesting.
That is a very god answer. You are very smart.
Of course she is. She’s my daughter.
That is very funny. Are you ready to go to the airport?
I am. Sue, are you also ready?
Yes, Dad, I was ready before you were.
Okay, then let’s go to the airport.
(They all get in Mrs. Kim’s car and drive to the airport.)
Thank you so much for all your help.
Yes, thank you very much.
You don’t have to thank me. We are family. It was my pleasure.
Good-bye. See you next year.
Bye.
Good-bye. And maybe we can see each other sooner than next year. I may be
visiting Seoul next month.
That’s great news. If you come to Seoul, you must stay at our house.
Yes, Auntie, you must stay with us.
Of course I will stay with you. We are family.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 15: Back in Seoul

(Mr. Pak and Su-mi fly back to Seoul. Mrs. Pak and Tae-gyun meet then at the
airport, and they all go home together.)

So, how was your trip?
It was wonderful, but I missed you a lot.
What about you Su-mi? How was your trip?
I had a great time.
What did you do? Where did you go?
We went to L.A., San Francisco, and the Grand Canyon. And we saw the ocean and
the Golden gate Bridge.
When I go next year I will go to New York and Boston.
That’s a good idea. New York and Boston are close to each other, just like Los
Angeles and San Francisco.
(Mr. Pak takes out a box from Burberry’s and gives it to his wife.)
Oh, I almost forgot. Here is your present.
Thank you, dear. I thought you forgot.
How could I forget my wife?
I have a good idea. Why don’t we all go to America next year?
That’s a good idea. Okay, next year we will all go to America together.
That means we should practice our English every day until next year.
Okay, let’s only speak English form now on.

Tape 1 A Mother and Her Young Child Learning English
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 1 Wake up in the morning
(Mrs. Lee, a Korean housewife, decides to teach English to her son Minsu. She
will nickname Minsu “Michael” from now on. So she also decides to speak only
English to him.)
Mrs. Lee (Mother): Michael, it is time to wake up.
Michael (Son): Huh?
Mrs. Lee (Mother): Yes, it is time to wake up. And, also, from now on I will
speak only English to you. And you should speak only English to me, too.
Michael (Son): Okay, mom.
Mrs. Lee (Mother): Right. That's good.
Michael (Son): It will be hard at first, but I think I can do it.
Mrs. Lee (Mother): I know you can do it.
Michael (Son): I will do my best.
Mrs. Lee (Mother): That is great. All I want is for you to do your best in
everyting you do.
Michael (Son): Mom, what time is it?
Mrs. Lee (Mother): It is seven o'clock in the moring.
Michael (Son): Seven o'clock? I have to go to school by eight.
Mrs. Lee (Mother): Yes, so come and eat your breakfast.
Michael (Son): Okay, I will wash my face, brush my teeth, and then I will eat
breakfast.
Mrs. Lee (Mother): Don't forget to wash your hands, too.
Michael (Son): Mom, when I wash my face, I'm also washing my hands.
Mrs. Lee (Mother): That's true. Okay, then don't forget to brush your hair.
Michael (Son): I won't. I always brush my hair before I go to school.
Mrs. Lee (Mother): You've never brush your hair or you teeth before! Whendid you
start?
Michael (Son): Mom, now that I'm in middle school, I have a girlfriend. So now I
have to look good.
Mrs. Lee (Mother): A girlfriend? When I was in middle school, I never thought of
boys.
Michael (Son): I know, Mom. You told me twenty times.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 2 Eating breakfast

(Michael goes into the kitchen and sits down at the table. His mom and dad are
already there.)

Mrs. Lee (Mother): Michael, what do you want for breakfast?

Michael (Son): I would like some cereal, please.

Mr. Lee (Father): Cereal? Wouldn't you still be hungry?

Michael (Son): Dad, you're speaking English, too?

Mr. Lee (Father): Yes, your mother said it would help you. So I am speaking
English, too.

Michael (Son): It feels strange speaking English to you, Dad.

Mr. Lee (Father): Don't worry about that! What you should worry about is you

breakfast. How can you eat only cereal?

Mrs. Lee (Mother): It is not only cereal. He will be eating it with milk.

Michael (Son): Yeah, Dad. I will be having milk and cereal.

Mr. Lee (Father): That doesn't matter. I don't think only milk and cereal is

enough. You also need to eat some rice and kimchi.

Michael (Son): Dad, young people don't like kimchi for breakfast.

Mrs. Lee (Mother): Yes, dear. You know Michael doesn't like spicy food in the
morning.

Mr. Lee (Father): When I was young, we ate kimchi three times a day and liked
it. And if I don't eat rice, I would be still hungry.

Michael (Son): You always say that, Dad. But grandpa said you only like bread
and chocolate.

Mr. Lee (Father): That's not true.

Michael (Son): Oh, that's what grandpa said.

Mrs. Lee (Mother): Michael, it is seven thirty. You would be late.

Michael (Son): Okay, let me eat this cereal, and then I'll catch the bus at
seven forty-five.

Mrs. Lee (Mother): Hurry up!

Mr. Lee (Father): And tomorrow, you should eat some lice.

Michael (Son): Dad, that's not right. It is rice with an R, not lice with an L.
And I'll eat some rice today.

Mr. Lee (Father): You will? good. Here, have some righ now.

Michael (Son): No, Dad. I'll eat it for lunch and dinner. I just don't like it
for breakfast.

Mr. Lee (Father): All right. You win.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 3 Going to school
(Michael finishes his breakfast and then walkes to the bus stop. A little while
later, a school bus comes and he goes on it. On the bus, he meets his friend,
Andy.)
Michael: Andy, how are you?
Andy: Huh?
Michael: No, not "huh?' You should say, "what?'
Andy: What?
Michael: That's better. Let's speak in English.
Andy: Okay, but why?
Michael: Well, my mom decided that the best way to learn English is to practice
it all the time.
Andy: Everybody knows it.
Michael: Yes, everybody knows it, but nobody does it. So we are going to do it.
Andy: It sounds like a good idea.
Michael: It's a great idea. Maybe we should tell our friends and teachers about
it.
Andy: Maybe, but we should think about it first.
Michael: You're right. Let's think about it before we decide.
Andy: What are you doing at lunch time?
Michael: I don't know. Why?
Andy: We can talk about it more then.
Michael: That's a good idea. Let's talk about it more at lunch time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 4 Back at home

(Mr. and Mrs. Lee are still back at home. They are talking about the idea of
speaking only English. )

Mr. Lee (Father): I am not sure that speaking only English is a good idea.

Mrs. Lee (Mother): Why not?

Mr. Lee (Father): Well, I'm worried that Machieal will forget Korean.

Mrs. Lee (Mother): That is impossible.

Mr. Lee (Father): No, it's not?

Mrs. Lee (Mother): Of course it is. Even if we speak English to Michael, he will

watch Korean television, listen to Korean songs, and go to Korean school. How

can he forget?

Mr. Lee (Father): You're right. I don't have to worry. But, why are we speaking
English to each other?

Mrs. Lee (Mother): Because if we don't speak English, then Machieal won't,
either.

Mr. Lee (Father): But my English is not very good.

Mrs. Lee (Mother): Yes, it is. And it will get better if you speak it more.

Mr. Lee (Father): That is true. And, even though it will be diffcult, I will do
it for my son.

Mrs. Lee (Mother): Thank you. I knew you would understand.

Mr. Lee (Father): That is what partents are for. It is our job to help him.

Mrs. Lee (Mother): Yes.

(Mrs. Lee looks at the clock.)

Mrs. Lee (Mother): What time do you have to go to work?

Mr. Lee (Father): By nine o'clcok. Why?

Mrs. Lee (Mother): Well, it's already eight fifteen.

Mr. Lee (Father): Oh! I should go.

Mrs. Lee (Mother): good-bye. See you tonight.

Mr. Lee (Father): good-bye. I'll be home by seven.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 5 A telephone call
(Mrs. Lee makes a telephone call to Andy's mother, Mrs. Cho.)
Mrs. Lee: Hello, may I please speak with Mrs. Cho?
Mrs. Cho: This is she. May I ask who is calling?
Mrs. Lee: Yes, it's Mrs. Lee, Michael's mother.
Mrs. Cho: Oh, Hello! How are you?
Mrs. Lee: I'm fine, thank you. How have you been?
Mrs. Cho: Fine, thank you. May I ask you a question?
Mrs. Lee: Of course.
Mrs. Cho: Why are we speaking in English?
Mrs. Lee: Oh, yes. I am trying to teach English to Michael by speaking only
English to him. Then I remembered that you majored in English literature in
college, so I was wondering if you would help me.
Mrs. Cho: I would be happy to help you. But I graduated from college fifteen
years ago. My English is not very fluent.
Mrs. Lee: Then it will be good practice for you, too.
Mrs. Cho: That's true. And it would be great for Andy. He really wants to
improve his English.
Mrs. Lee: I am so happy. Thank you so much.
Mrs. Cho: You are very welcome.
Mrs. Lee: By the way, what are you doing this afternoon?
Mrs. Cho: I have no plans. Why?
Mrs. Lee: Well, I'm going to go to the supermarket. Would you like to go with
me?
Mrs. Cho: Yes. That would be great. I need to go grocery with shopping, too.
Mrs. Lee: I will drive my car. What time should I pick you up?
Mrs. Cho: How is two o'clock?
Mrs. Lee: Perfect, I'll see you then.
Mrs. Cho: Okay, see you then.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 6 Grocery shopping

(Mrs. Lee drives her car to Mrs. Cho's house. Then they drive together to the
supermarket. )

Mrs. Lee: Sorry, I'm late.

Mrs. Cho: That's Okay. It's only two ten.

Mrs. Lee: Yes, but it's cold outside. I'm sorry.

Mrs. Cho: No, really, it is no problem. Where are we going grocery shopping?

Mrs. Lee: Let's go to the LG Supermarket.

Mrs. Cho: I've never been there. How is it?

Mrs. Lee: It's very nice. The prices and services are very good.

(They arive at the LG Surpermarket, park the car and go inside.)

Mrs. Cho: Wow, this is really nice. They have everything.

Mrs. Lee: Yes, they do have the very good selection. What do you need to buy
today?

Mrs. Cho: Today I need to buy vegetables.

Mrs. Lee: What vegetables are you going to buy?

Mrs. Cho: I'm going to buy lettuce, mushrooms, tomatoes, potatoes, onions and
garlic.

Mrs. Lee: But tomato is not a fruit, it's a vegetable.

Mrs. Cho: Oh! Really? I didn't know that. What are you going to buy?

Mrs. Lee: My husband really likes meat. So I have to buy a lot of meat.

Mrs. Cho: What kind of meat are you going to buy?

Mrs. Lee: I'm going to buy pork ribs, beef steaks and chicken breasts.

Mrs. Cho: What about fish?

Mrs. Lee: Oh, I almost forgot. I'm also going to buy some shrimp, crab and tuna.

Mrs. Cho: That's a lot of meat and a lot of seafood.

Mrs. Lee: Yes, but my family eats a lot.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 7 At cafe
(Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Cho finished their shopping and decide to go to a cafe to
talk some more.)
Mrs. Lee: Going to a cafe was a great idea. I have almost no time to rest during
a day.
Mrs. Cho: I understand how you feel. That is why I go to a cafe for one hour
every day. It gives me a chance to rest, to think, and sometimes, to talk.
Mrs. Lee: Yes, I think resting and talking are both very important. Especially
when you are always busy.
Mrs. Cho: Why don't we order first?
Mrs. Lee: That's a good idea. Let's order. Waiter!
Mrs. Cho: Oh, excuse me.
(Waiter): Yes. May I take your order?
Mrs. Cho: Yes, I would like an espresso, please.
Mrs. Lee: I am coffee.
Mrs. Cho: Oh, that's a Korean expression. You should say, "I'll have a coffee."
Mrs. Lee: Ah, thank you. I didn't know that. I'll have a coffee, please.
(Waiter): One espresso and one coffee, would you like anything else?
Mrs. Cho: No, thank you.
Mrs. Lee: Um... actually, could I also have a piece of cake?
(Waiter): Of couse. I'll get that for you now.
Mrs. Cho: I like cake, too. But I'm on a diet.
Mrs. Lee: Why? You're so thin.
Mrs. Cho: My husband says I need to lose weight.
Mrs. Lee: That's funny.
Mrs. Cho: Why?
Mrs. Lee: Because my husband always says I need to gain weight. He thinks I'm
skinny.
Mrs. Cho: Ha...
Mrs. Lee: Ha...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Situation 8 Lunch at school

(Back at school, Michael and Andy are eating lunch together.)

Andy: Michael, did you speak English in your classes?

Michael: I tried to, but some of teachers wouldn't let me.

Andy: Me too. When I spoke English at my Korean language class, the teacher hit

my hands with a stick.

Michael: Yeah, that happened to me, too. But it was my math teacher who hit me.
He said, "When we've in Korea and we should speak only Korean."

Andy: Really? I didn't think anyone still thought like that.

Michael: I know, but they do. There are still many people who think that Koreans
can't speak English well. But I think if you practice, you can speak English

Mrs. Kim: Are you tired?

Mr. Park: No, I feel fine. What about you, Sue?

Su-mi (Sue): No, I'm not tired. Why do you ask?

Mrs. Kim: Well, in front of our house, there are many nice stores. I thought you

might want to take a walk and see some of them.

Mr. Park: Okay, That sounds fun. Do you want to go too, Sue?

Su-mi (Sue): Of course I want to go. I love shopping.

Mr. Park: Well, I can't promise you whether you can buy anything or not. So we

won't really be shopping.

Su-mi (Sue): That's all right. I like window-shopping, too.

Mr. Park: Okay, let's go. We'll come back in about thirty minutes.

Mrs. Kim: Thirty minutes? All right. See you then.

(Mr. Park and Su-mi go out of the house and go down the street to where there
are many stores.)

Mr. Park: Hey, there is a store that sells food and drinks.

Su-mi (Sue): Can we go in? I am thirsty.

Mr. Park: Yes, I am thirsty, too.

(Mr. Park and Su-mi go into the store, but they cannot find the milk. Mr. Park
asks the man working at the store "where it is?')

Mr. Park: Excuse me, but where is the 'milk'?

(a man): I am sorry. What are you looking for?

Mr. Park: Milk. I want to know where the 'milk' is?

(a man): I am very sorry, but I can't understand.

Su-mi (Sue): We are looking for some milk.

(a man): Oh, milk! Thank you. It is in the back of the store, next to the cheese
and eggs.

Mr. Park: Wow, Sue. Your pronunciation is very good. That is the different

between the old and the new generation.

pizza. Then they decide to see Los Angeles.)

Jimmy: If you want to see LA, just ask me.

Mr. Park: Of course we want to see Los Angeles, but how can you help us?

Jimmy: Uncle, I am eighteen. I can drive a car.

Mr. Park: Really? Are you a good driver?

Mrs. Kim: Jimmy is a very good and very safe driver.

Su-mi (Sue): Yeah, Dad. Let's go with Jimmy oppa and see LA.

Jimmy: Sue, you don't have to call me oppa at America. You can just call me
Jimmy. Let's go!

(They get in the car and begin to drive.)

Mr. Park: Where are we going first?

Jimmy: First, we'll go to the ocean. The ocean and the beaches here are very
famous.

Mr. Park: That will be very nice. I love the ocean.

Su-mi (Sue): Where will we go after that?

Jimmy: After that, we can go the Hollywood.

Su-mi (Sue): Cool! Hollywood. Will we see some movie stars?

Jimmy: No. But we will see some movie studios.

Mr. Park: What are movie studios?

Su-mi (Sue): Dad, Movie studios are where movies are made.

Mr. Park: How did you know that?

Jimmy: Yeah, Sue. How did you know that?

Su-mi (Sue): I saw it on the internet. Before coming to LA, I looked on the
internet for information.

Jimmy: Do you have the internet in Korea, too?

Su-mi (Sue): Of course we do. The internet and computers are very popular in
Korea.

Mr. Park: Yes. Even I learned how to use E-mail last year.

Jimmy: Really? How did you learn?

Mr. Park: Sue taught me.

Jimmy: And how did Sue learn?

Su-mi (Sue): All young people in Korea know about computers. We learn about them
in school.

Mr. Park: That is enough about the computers. Let's go to the beach.

Tommy: From Korea? Cool! Where is Korea? Is it in China?

Su-mi (Sue): No. Korea is not in China. Korea is between China and Japan.

Tommy: Oh, sorry. But you speak Chinese, right?

Su-mi (Sue): No, of course not. I speak Korean.

Tommy: Really? I didn't know that. In America, we don't have many chances to
learn about Korea. Can you tell me some more things about your country?

Su-mi (Sue): Of course. Ask anything you want, and I will try to answers as well
as I can.

Tommy: Well, what do you eat in Korea?

Su-mi (Sue): We eat a lot of rice and kimchi.

Tommy: Kimchi? Isn't that really hot and spicy?

Su-mi (Sue): Yes, sometimes. But there are many kinds of kimchi.

Tommy: Really? I didn't know that. But if you eat only rice and kimchi, don't
you get bored?

Su-mi (Sue): That is not all we eat. There are hundreds of kinds of Korean food.
We eat all kinds of meat, fish and vegetables. And these days, young people also
eat pizza, hamburgers and spaghetti. Seoul is becoming a very international
city.

Tommy: Wow, I didn't know that. It's Seoul a big city?

Su-mi (Sue): It's very big. About fourteen million people live there.

Tommy: Fourteen million? That's bigger than LA!

Su-mi (Sue): Yes, you should come with Jimmy to visit Korea.

Jimmy: Yeah, let's go to Seoul next summer.

Tommy: I would like that very much.

Situation 12: Going to San Francisco

(The next day, Mr. Park and Su-mi take an airplane to San Francisco.)

Su-mi (Sue): Dad, I'm really tired. I don't want to fly again.

Mr. Park (Dad): Sue, don't worry. This flight is only one hour, not ten.

Su-mi (Sue): Oh, that's different. One hour is easy.

(One hour later, they arrive in San Francisco. They leave the airport and catch
a taxi.)

A man (Taxi driver): Where to?

Mr. Park (Dad): Excuse me?

A man (Taxi driver): Where do you want to go?

Mr. Park (Dad): Oh, we are going to the Marriott Hotel.

A man (Taxi driver): Okay, the Marriott Hotel. Are you here for business?

Mr. Park (Dad): No, my daughter and I are here for sightseeing.

A man (Taxi driver): Well, San Francisco is a wonderful city. What are you going
to see?

Mr. Park (Dad): I don't know. Are you from San Francisco?

A man (Taxi driver): Yes. I was born and raised here.

Mr. Park (Dad): Well, what do you think we should see?

A man (Taxi driver): How long will you be here?

Mr. Park (Dad): We will only be here for one day.

A man (Taxi driver): Oh, that's not much time. If you only have one day, you
should see the Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park.

Su-mi (Sue): Yeah, I learned about the Golden Gate Bridge in school. I really
want to see it.

Mr. Park (Dad): Okay, where else should we visit?

A man (Taxi driver): You should also visit Chinatown. It is very old and had

many good places to eat.

Su-mi (Sue): I love Chinese food. My favorite is Tangsuyuk.

A man (Taxi driver): What is that? I've never heard of it before?

Mr. Park (Dad): Oh, that is the Korean name for sweet and sour pork.

A man (Taxi driver): Sweet and sour pork? That's my favorite, too.

Mr. Park (Dad): Okay, why don't we go to Chinatown first? We can eat lunch
there, and then go to see the Golden Gate Bridge.

Mr. Park (Dad): I know a very good restaurant. Do you want me to take you there?

Mr. Park (Dad): Yes, please.

to the Grand Canyon.)

Mr. Park (Dad): Today, we're flying to the Grand Canyon.

Su-mi (Sue): Will it only take one hour?

Mr. Park (Dad): No, it will take about two hours.

Su-mi (Sue): That's still a lot better than ten hours.

Mr. Park (Dad): Yes, it is. And if we drove there in a car, it would be take
almost thirteen hours.

Su-mi (Sue): Thirteen hours! I could never do that. I'm glad we are flying
there.

(Mr. Park and Su-mi arrive at the airport and then take a bus to the Grand
Canyon.)

Mr. Park (Dad): There it is, the Grand Canyon. What do you think?

Su-mi (Sue): It's so big. I can't believe it.

Mr. Park (Dad): Yes, we saw pictures of it, but it is too big for a picture.

Su-mi (Sue): Who made it?

Mr. Park (Dad): Not 'who', but 'what'. What made the Grand Canyon was the (a)
river. Can you see that water at the bottom of the Canyon?

Su-mi (Sue): Yes, I see it.

Mr. Park (Dad): Well, that's the Colorado River. That river flowed for many tens

of thousands of years until it made this canyon.

Su-mi (Sue): Wow, but water looks so weak.

Mr. Park (Dad): I know, but water is very strong.

Su-mi (Sue): This is a great vacation, Dad. I'm learning a lot of English and
also about nature history.

Mr. Park (Dad): Yes, that is why travelling can be an important part of
studying.

Situation 14: Going back to Seoul

(Mr. Park and Su-mi finish their trip to the Grand Canyon, and are now back in
Los Angeles.)

Mrs. Kim: Did you enjoy your trip to San Francisco?

Su-mi (Sue): Yes, I enjoyed it very much.

Mrs. Kim: And what about the Grand Canyon?

Su-mi (Sue): Oh, I love that, too.

Mrs. Kim: Which one did you like more?

Su-mi (Sue): I liked them both. They were very different but both very
interesting.

Mrs. Kim: That is a very good answer. You are very smart.

Mr. Park (Dad): Of course she is. She is my daughter.

Mrs. Kim: That is very funny. Are you ready to go to the airport?

Mr. Park (Dad): I am. Sue, are you also ready?

Su-mi (Sue): Yes, Dad. I was ready before you were.

Mrs. Kim: Okay, then let's go to the airport.

(They all get in Mrs. Kim's car and drive to the airport.)

Mr. Park (Dad): Thank you so much for all your help.

Su-mi (Sue): Yes, thank you very much.

Mrs. Kim: You don't have to thank me. We are family. It was my pleasure.

Mr. Park (Dad): Good-bye. See you next year.

Su-mi (Sue): Bye.

Mrs. Kim: Good-bye. And maybe we can see each other sooner than next year. I may

be visiting Seoul next month.

Mr. Park (Dad): That's great news. If you come to Seoul, you must stay at our
house.

Su-mi (Sue): Yes, Auntie, you must stay with us.

Mrs. Kim: Of course I will stay with you. We are family.

Mrs. Park: What about you, Su-mi? How was your trip?

Su-mi: I had a great time.

Tae-gyun: What did you do? Where did you go?

Su-mi: We went LA, San Francisco and the Grand Canyon. And we saw the ocean and
the Golden Gate Bridge.

Tae-gyun: When I go next year, I will go to New York and Boston.

Su-mi: That's a good idea. New York and Boston are close to each other just like

Los Angeles and San Francisco.

(Mr. Park takes out a box from Burberry's and gives it to his wife.)

Mr. Park: Oh, I almost forgot. Here is your present.

Mrs. Park: Thank you, dear. I thought you forgot.

Mr. Park: How could I forget my wife!

Mrs. Park: I have a good idea. Why don't we all go to America next year?

Mr. Park: That is a good idea. Okay, next year we will all go to America
together.

Tae-gyun: That means we should practice our English every day until next year.

Su-mi: Okay, let's only speak English from now on.
