The 2002 Pricelessware List will be uploaded after the New Year.

The following programs will not be included on the 2002 PL, even though they
received enough votes. The reason for exclusion is listed after each name.

AudioGalaxy (Spyware concerns)
INTERNET / Web Search Utility :
Google Online (web site)
INTERNET / Web Site Update Monitor:
C4U (Spyware concerns)
SECURITY / Anti-Virus Tools :

SYSTEM UTILITIES / Diagnostic Tools :
BigFix (Adware)
SYSTEM UTILITIES / Hex Editors :
A.X.E. (program cannot be reigistered without breaking EULA)

to keep them off the list, they will be included in the 2002 PL.

DESKTOP / Screen Capture : Print Key
INTERNET / FTP Client : WS_FTP LE
SYSTEM UTILITIES / Memory Utilities: Cacheman
SYSTEM UTILITIES / Memory Utilities: MemLoad

The following program had been mistakenly omitted from the vote ballot.
During a call for dicussion during the Vote Review phase, it received enough
support to be included in the list.
The omitted category and the nominated program were:

One final note, the following 2 programs were never assigned a category.

Congrats on a great job..........One question, though....I noticed "Ulead
Gif Animator" on the list.
I wish it were free...but it doesn't seem to be ........Is there a free
version available somewhere ?

Yes, it's the formerly Shareware version of 2.0 now available as Freeware:

I was the perpetrator of all these no-votes. I thought Genna would
count them as minus one vote, rather than a call for more discussion.
I would have replied sooner, but I was on holiday.

It is too late now, but here are my reasons for disliking the
programs:

> DESKTOP / Screen Capture: Print Key

Irfanview does it better.

> INTERNET / FTP Client: WS_FTP LE

As a novice FTP user, I had a LOT of trouble getting this to work
properly. I found SmartFTP MUCH easier to use. Someone else said they
had trouble using SmartFTP behind a firewall, so I suppose you could
argue for keeping it on the list for that reason.

> SYSTEM UTILITIES / Memory Utilities: Cacheman
> SYSTEM UTILITIES / Memory Utilities: MemLoad

In my opinion, these are more likely to slow your PC down than to
speed it up - unless you really know what you are doing.

> TEXT / Editor - PDF: GhostScript and GhostView

These are far too much work to download, configure and use. I started
a thread explaining why I disliked these programs, but they were
vigorously defended. I suppose other people have more time on their
hands than me.

Anyway, these are just my opinions. All these programs have many
supporters, so they must be good for them and therefore the programs
belong on the list.

cheers

Agreed. This actually does (did) more than add a tab, though. It offers
the ability to "finagle" (aka, "tweak") system settings. It belongs with
TweakUI and X-Setup. When I used it in the past, was always impressed with
it's stability and functionality. It didn't have the "extensability" of X-
Setup, but it was a better product, IMHO.

In the great scheme of things, I'd rather have a somewhat large
.sig than 5K+ of superfluous, unsnipped text. But if it bothers you
that much, I'll be happy to change it.

(Thanks for noticing the grammar mistake, btw... :p)

My post was largely in jest. Your sig contains excellent, and sadly
underused advice. If two blank lines are the price of having someone else
learn to snip, then it would be well worth it.

Hi Al -

Both links work fine.
They were both up during the whole nomination/discussion/vote process.

And no, nothing to do with @home.

Hi Iain -

Just for future reference...

No votes do not count against a program's total yes votes. They are tallied
separately.

A no-vote should be cast if the person believes that the program does not
belong on the list, either because it is inferior to similar programs or
because the category itself is too specific or not important enough to merit
inclusion.

For a no-vote to prevail, it has to receive substantial support.

Hi Bob -

Yes, we discussed including it now. We decided to wait a couple of months
for a few of us to become familiar with the program. We will then take a
look at Art's program again. Also, since it is a program that depends on
another, if we do include the updater, it will be listed under F-Prot, much
as the reflist for AdAware is listed under AdWare.

Yes, the PL will have a permanent, official home. Just checking out server
options at the moment.

Sitting NOT in my office it is much more difficult
to follow the threads "between" the holidays. ;-)

Anyway: Genna, thanks for this good job.
I hope you will be able to relax for the next days.

For everybody reading this:
All the best for the year 2002.

Enjoy.

Godaddy.com is pretty cheap. If you find something cheaper than $7 per
month, I'd love to know.

More Properties is listed twice. Once in SYSTEM UTILITIES / No Category and
once (appropriately) in SYSTEM UTILITIES / System Tweakers
