Problems running thunderbird with current jdk (1.4.2p6)

The thunderbird mail program frequently crashes with the message

INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Could not get the JVM manager

I didn't know it used Java, but would appreciate any suggestions. It ran
without any problems under patch-level 5.

It's a known bug. It looks like Thunderbird is trying to load browser
plugins. I fixed mine by removing the java plugin from
/usr/X11R6/lib/plugins.
