If this guy thinks there are no serious discussions on here then the
remedy for him is simple.
Start one.

Speaking as a former "lurker", I totally disagree with the anonymous
person's opinion of this group. I guess it's your perspective--if
he/she grew up in the 50's, and has been a collector for years,
perhaps he/she doesn't find these conversations *interesting* enough,
but I certainly do and I am learning a lot.
>I do agree that just making lists does get old after awhile. I would consider

Funny, it was the favorites deluge after Ox's intrusion that "hooked"
me into reading this newsgroup daily...I suppose after awhile it's not
as much fun, but it sent me running for my discs to replay songs I
hadn't heard in awhile and eager to learn about ones I hadn't ever
heard.

Almost everything I have is on CD or tape, I don't have many 45s and
the ones I do have are from the 70s mostly, so I gotta admit I skipped
over most of these discussions...now I have this wonderful book which
talks about 45s, a sides and b sides, so I'm getting a clearer picture
of the history of the songs I've had on comps by the drifters,
platters, etc. I'll never "feel" the way you guys do about the flip
sides because I heard them all at the same time...but I do understand
the concept because I used to flip over my 45s in the 60s and did get
*attached* to some of those songs, but won't discuss them here because
I know it's off topic.

Again thank you very much, Norm, for taking the time to post these
mp3s for newbies like myself who have *never* heard them and probably
never would without your sharing it. I can't wait to hear it :)

Thats really stupid. Why doesn't he come in then and show us all his
knowlege. We know he don't have any balls if he has to use e-mail
instead of confronting us. You were much to nice Bruce, tell him to
e-mail me or if he's reading this I'd be more then happy to exchange
opinions.
All the pathetic indignation that has been spewed in response to
this has been quite amusing. Does anyone doubt for a moment that
if the complainant had enumerated Bruce among the people that
"know anything" that Bruce somehow would have marshalled enough
restraint to not tattle? Bruce had his feelings hurt, and knew
he could count on others as sensitive as he (some of whom have
lectured others to buck up and absorb criticism that comes their
way) to strike back at this heretic. You didn't let him down.

Totally wrong Marc. I LIKE CONTROVERSY!!! Whether this person thinks I know
anything or not, I still would want the group to see what he thinks and to get
their response. I have enough confidence in my own knowledge not to care what
someone else thinks about it.

Marc, I'm far from sensitive. I asked this person three times to post his views
about me to the group. I would love to go toe to toe with the person in a
public debate, but the person knows that he'd get trounced in that forum, so
he/she backed right down.

What "pathetic indignation"?

Nobody who reads Bruce's postings regularly would argue that
point! :-)

I don't understand your post at all,Marc.
I've read all the replies to Bruce's initial post and I can't find any
hint of "pathetic indiignation".
Am I missing some posts here or what?

Did the word "mean-spirited" apper in any of your exchanges? (Just
wondering.)

Guys getting annoying now Dean with his sly remarks.
Methinks this group should be renamed
rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.WWF.wrestling.1950s!!! :-)
Last week we had Bruce and myself slugging it out in the ring.
Something tells me that the next scheduled match will see newcomer
Tony S. pitched against old time scrapper Marc D in a prolonged bout
So I think I'll phone Vince McMahon and get him to arrange the match
everyone wants to see!!
A three way womans championship cat fight!
Diane v. Jeanie McW v. Carina
With The Fos as special guest referee!!
Now would'nt we all buy tickets for that??? :-)
Newcomer to the Group Rog but certaintly no newcomer
to dealing with hackers or sarcastic primadonnas who think
their Gods gift to the PC. Right now he's trying to get all the info
he can on me, Wish he'd hurry up I have better things to do like
watching three women wrestling. Did you say in jello or mud?:-)

Tony,
I think you missed Roger's irony. Flame wars--especially when they are
not about music--are boring. Flame wars by newbies against founding
members of the group are particularly boring, and self-destructive. I
think you may have on-topic things to contribute here, but you are
close now to having no one bother to read them. I suggest you cool it.

You guys are really something. Especially You Norm. The guy knocks
and ridicules you and you sound like you idolize him. And you Mark,
founding members? who are you referring too, Marc the instigator? I
didn't come here to start a flame war and if you guys don't have the
balls to stand up for yourselfs then thats your problem. Personnaly I
had just about enough of this shit. I'm sure there's a lot here who
wants to see me go so I'll do so Gladly. Just keep this in mind, there
will be others coming not afraid to give their opinions as I'm sure
there were in the past. You guys like feeling superior over others so
keep your Group with all the followers willing to kiss your asses.
Have a good life........

You ain't no real lawyer!!!!
A REAL lawyer would've counted all the cheques (sorry CHECKS!) that
came in during his hibernation!!
Welcome back Fred!
Indeed. I have never regretted posting something as much as I do the
quoted rant. While I remain angry at Bruce for trying to stir up off-
topic discussion, my characterization of the replies clearly was not
a response to anything real that had transpired in the newsgroup, and
besides, I ended up being a large contributor of off-topic messages.
The day before I posted it, I had publicly lauded Tony with:
Rarely on Usenet have I seen such a gracious, insightful
reflection after a misunderstanding. Usually the response
is to dig in deeper and never admit one has anything to
learn. A lesson for us all.
There is a double irony here in (1) that this appearance of grace and
insight in Mr. Soprano was obviously an anomaly of the highest order,
and (2) that I have had an opportunity so soon to show that I have
learned the lesson.
Please accept my sincere apologies for disrupting the newsgroup.
Yep, that way anyone with the guts (or spelling ability) of a "mouse" can say
anything they want without having to back up their words.
And its too bad your father didn't have a vasectomy.
And a safety tip for anyone considering the procedure: after you shave, do not,
repeat, DO NOT, apply aftershave.

To this point.
The thread/question about lurking (Mark) about a month ago : I think
everyone tries to contribute with his/her possibilities (eg says Jeanie
here, same goes for me).
Norm is right when he talks about the charts etc. Maybe boring for some of
you. On the other hand those things gives others (eg me) a start (again)
about the 50's music.
This started with a remark from someone and as far as I could read this
quickly (and could understand, think/translate English-Dutch vica versa : I
don't even know the word "pan", but hopefully understand) now everyone is
quarreling or am I wrong ?
It's not worth the time. Do what you all are good in : write about the music
you like.
With my friends I am the "gourou" about 50's music. Amongst you (all) I
feel/am just a beginner.
So Bruce, wether or not you know nothing/something/everything about 50's
music it is
all in perspective : don't bother the person's remarks, don't feel offended
(after asking 3 times !!), just ignore.
I have a suggestion.
Although I am very very glad you all post so much, I don't understand where
you get all the time for doing this. I don't have that time, sadly.
Marks question about 'lurking' abouth a mont ago was partly because it
should be nice to have others posting in the group ('fresh blood') instead
talking to the same person's (free translation from me). If I am wrong,
please correct me.
So the suggestion. Don't just post your own brilliant (I am serious, not
sarcastic) thoughts/threads but try also react (more) on first comments from
others. Maybe that way you get the lurkers/partly posters out. If I am wrong
by saying this, sorry, then I didn't read the postings well enough.
I know I must be humble because I didn't start (yet) my own postings but it
is just a thought. I am not negative but trying to be positive (did take
some time to think/write this).
