You have to run REGEDIT and edit a key's value:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.8\shell\Open\Command. If the Default value
has a %1 at the end remove it. That should take care of the problem.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you,
No more superfluous
filename.xls is already open. Reopening will cause any changes you made
to be discarded. Do you want to reopen filename.xls?

Now I can sleep better at night with less of a headache with one more
annoying gong (noise) gone.
I might even consider actually creating more Excel files and actually
closing them and reopening files now. <grin>
Actually I'm more serious than you might think.

Of course, I don't know what ramifications this has to me (no network) or to
those on a network.

I always replied with no changes. I do see that if I actually do try to
open the file again myself, I do correctly still get the message that we
did away with that came up whenever we used a shortcut icon to open a file
directly as opposed to opening it from file open in Excel.

Wasn't my question, but sure appreciate the answer. Though would like to
know if I've destroyed some critical entity that was purposely there before.

Thanks again,
David McRitchie
