They actually zip-tied the figurines to the slingshot plastics?

Looks awesome. One of the best looking pins I've seen. The backglass looks
phenomenal, and all the adornments and everything. Can't wait to play it
and see if it plays as well as it looks...

Other than aesthetics, it is not too bad of an idea. It would allow some
give if the ball hits them, that way they won't break as easily.

It's kind of a non-issue; due to the way the figurines are placed,
when playing the fasteners aren't visible at all. It's only when you
put a camera at 2 (or 11) o'clock and point back towards the
slingshots that you can really SEE that they're there. I hadn't even
noticed them after playing the machine for _hours_ until reading this
thread.

Hey JWC,

obviously you are struggling in the appreciation of quality built pins
category....... im going to blow 4 K on a new pin and they are going to be
fricken stingy with a couple small nuts and screws to hold down a few cheesy
"cereal box" action figures instead they use plastic cable ties. i believe
that is a big slap in the face. i posted about a week ago that i saw close up
pictures and wasn't impressed, but very few believed me and said i was just
trolling. so far i'm still not impressed with the playfield artwork and i
don't think the pictures can get any closer, so i think i can pass fair
judgement on that. as for the play, i'll have to wait on that since it could
play awesome, but for some odd reason i have a hunch that its not going to be
able to top TSPP.

JWC you might want to get back to advertising for your pin forum since you
don't seem to be having to many visitors..... or members...... but with
quality posts like what you have been putting up lately, no wonder its
struggling.

When you hit the upper right saucer hole, the flasher comes on and the tower
moves just prior to kicking the ball out. Lets you know where the ball is,
because on the left orbit shot it often goes there but is actually hidden from
view.

Er, I did already! But if you need a sound bite...

It's good. It's REALLY good.

And that's coming from the same guy who wrote much of THIS: http://groups.google.com/groups?

..so you _know_ I don't blow smoke up people's.... rear's. :)

Much more than that, and you'll have to wait for the Two Grumpy Old Men (+ the Yancy Blaylock Experience)
review. (Sunday night, late? Maybe? Monday absolute worst case?)

Don't worry, we'll treat it with the same loving care as all TGOM reviews. Yes, it does have pluses and minuses like
every other game, but in this case, the pluses FAR outweigh the minuses.

Then all pinballs in the last decade or so are all toyboxes cuz most
of them have these toys and junk mounted all over the place. I
haven't seen that many put on slingshots before though - but those
shouldn't obscure anything. TZ is one of the worst and people even
pile more on them as if it's a good idea. Can't tell about the pf art
quality from the pics. Love the look of the backglass and cabinet,
from the pics anyway. I'm still waiting to see a T3 in person ; )

I dunno, the rings don't look black to me, look light colored. What
it LOOKS like to me is there is a black mounting rod that comes thru
the plastic and has the ring (or tie or whatever it is) mounted to it,
and the figures are sort of held there with the ring. Seems like a
better idea than just hard-mounting them since the ball can hit them
and they will flex and not break off and not break off arms or legs
etc and clog things up. Better mechanically but not as clean looking
as just being bolted there. Again that's what it looks like to me in
the pics, I haven't seen the machine in person....Frenchy

Lol :P You're so right, Mark. And I have had the chance to play T3 and
even fix two bad switches already. The playfield art is "ok" but not
much more than that. Certainly not compelling at all and typical of a
few of their games it looks like half-tone screening. I still think the
best Stern playfield artwork by far is TSPP with RCT right behind it.

Okay, I looked at the pictures again (this time looking for it) and see how
they were done (definately not for shipping). I don't think it looks so
bad. If they were attached in a more rigid factor they would fly off in no
time.

On the other hand, looking at some of those pictures, you gotta wonder if
some of the actors said "Hey - give ME a big black one!" ;)

If you don't normally see them, who cares? If they get the job done just as effectively, again, who cares?

Let me put it to you this way... Would you rather have them save five cents per figurine using zip ties that you don't
normally see and (!hint!) take that money and improve the sound, OR (exclusive or! one OR the other, NOT both!)
would you rather them use a nut and a bolt and leave the sound system the way it was?

HmmmMMMMMmm??? Don't bother; we all know what the answer is; you'd rather have them use the zip tie and
recycle the money into the sound system. We ALL would. We ALL would make the same choice, given those
choices!

So come on man, have a _little_ bit of faith that Stern is doing the right thing.

That's sort of a correct description. There's a multiball up there, takes three tower shots to get it (the first time). On
the first or second shot, it moves a little bit. On the third shot, you get the tower-falling-over routine.

I agree completely. I have spent several hours on the game as well and I would
say two things about the figurines: I did not even notice the wire ties while
playing and I did not really take notice of the figurines themselves. All my
attention was on the ball and playfield lights. So for me, the figurines and
how they are attached is not an issue.

LOTR is a great game, one that is fast with a very deep ruleset. All of the
ring modes have a bonus for completion and count toward something special
later, see the elf gift light and small wheel of triangular lights on the left
side of the playfield for some ideas.

Each of the main multiballs--Fellowship, Two Towers, and Return of the King has
different rules and objectives. I am sure this is a pin that will be hard for
all but a few to truly get everything done in one game. Of course, it will be
a good game for the home because of the deep ruleset.

As is typical of any game on test, there are a few bugs to work out. I am
confident the Stern team will sort these bugs out in short order. Personally,
I am looking around right now to see who has the best price.
