Here is, by request, the Code of a Sea Org Member, taken from pp 193-194 of
the original edition of 'What is Scientology?'. The code is dated to 1971,
and there are no other versions that I am aware of.

The code starts out with a promise to obey the cult leadership (1). It em-
hasizes repeatedly the commitment to carrying out orders or completing
cycles under any circumstances (11, 12,18), and includes, as Dennis pointed
out in another thread, what is essentially a restatement of the Fair Game
rule (17). Also worth noticing is what is not here: nothing in it binds
the swearer to abide by 'Wog rules', the laws of the society in which he
lives. There are 2 references to effectiveness (7, 12), and many that
imply it in so many words, but none to compassion or kindness, explicit or
implicit. While he swears to uphold Sea Org principles, and effectively
promises to be ruled by them in every aspect of his life (3, 6, 13, 15),
and to demand the same of other Sea Org members, (7, 14), nothing in the
Code gives him any real rights in return, except perhaps for the right
to 'fair and legal justice' (7). Anyone who has been in the Sea Org knows
how meaningful this right is. It also includes a vow to extend Sea Org
principles over the planet and even the universe (3, 4).

When I was in SO, this oath was administered once a week to new members
in a swearing-in ceremony, in front of the omnipresent giant LRH poster.
This was, incidentally, the only ceremony I ever saw in which Scientolo-
gists swore publicly to any of the many Scientology codes.

1). I promise to uphold, forward and carry out Command Intention.

2). I promise to use Dianetics and Scientology for the greatest good
for the greatest number of dynamics.

3). I promise to help get ethics in on this planet and the universe.

4). I promise to do my part to achieve the Sea Org's humanitarian
objective which is to create a safe environment where the Fourth Dynamic
engram can be audited out.

5). I promise to uphold the fact that duty is the Sea Org member's
true motivation, which is the highest motivation there is.

6). I promis to keep my own personal ethics in and to uphold beyond
all compromise the honor, integrity and true discipline that is the Sea
Org's heritage and tradition.

7). I promise to effectively lead, care for and train those under my
charge and to ensure they keep their own ethic in and if that fails to
take action with fair and legal justice.

8). I promise to take responsibility for the preservation and the
continued full and exact use of the technologies of Dianetics and
Scientology.

9). I promise to exemplify in my conduct the belief that to command
is to serve and that a being is only as valuable as he can serve others.

10). I promise to improve my worth to the Sea Org and mankind by regu-
larly advancing my knowledge of and ability to apply the truths and tech-
nologies of Dianetics and Scientology.

11). I promise to accept and fulfill to the utmost of my ability the
responsibilities whatever they may be and wherever they may carry me in
the line of duty.

12). I promise to be competent and effective at all times and never try
to explain away or justify ineffectiveness nor minimize the true power
that I am.

13). I promise, at all times, to set a desirable example in appearance,
conduct and production to fellow Sea Org members and the area in which I
operate.

14). I promise to demand that my fellow Sea Org members not fall short
of the ideals and spirit of the Sea Org.

15). I promise to do my part to protect and further the image of the
Sea Org.

16). I promise to come to the defense of the Sea Org and fellow Sea
Org members whenever needed.

17). I promise through my actions to increase the power of the Sea Org
and decrease the power of any enemy.

18). I promise to make things go right and to persist until they do.

Thanks for posting this.

What is the procedure for becoming a SO member, after you arrive?
What sort of training is provided? Do they have manuals, or some such on
is required to be drilled on? Are new members drilled on the SO rules and
regulations? if so, what are these materials called?
How long does it take before you are accounted a Sea org member in good
standing and hatted to a task officially?

When you arrive at a base, you are placed on the Estates Project Force
(EPF). This is something like basic training and something like a
mild version of the RPF. The basic set-up is the same as RPF - 5 hours
a day of study, 8 hours a day of physical labor. But the humiliating
extras in the RPF are removed. You don't wear a dirty uniform, you
get to eat with other staff, you get 1/2 day off on Sunday. When
large projects are being put together, invariably the RPF will get
the really heavy, filthy, or dangerous work; the EPF crews get lighter
jobs.

Like the RPF, an org doesn't run its own; there is one run for all the
orgs in a given area. When I joined the Sea Org, the EPF for all the
orgs in Cedars (LA) as well as all the Gold (Hemet) orgs was being
run, as a tight ship, by Andre Tabayoyon. We would muster early in
the morning, around 7 a.m., and Andre would drill us on basic SO prin-
ciples. Then we would do some light cleaning in some of the local
orgs and off to breakfast. We did physical work (decks) with breaks
for lunch and dinner. You ran everywhere you went all day - no walking
on decks was one of the rules. You also had to keep a stat for the
deck work, which was 'cycles of action completed'. This gave begin-
ners a first introduction to stat pushes - by defining exactly what
constituted a 'cycle of action', you could nearly always get your
stat up.

At 6:00 we went to the course room for study. The study lineup was
Basic Study manual (an intro to study tech - this was optional and
dropped out if the member had already completed it or the Student Hat
at an org), the Welcome to the Sea Org tapes (5 tapes of lectures given
to new Sea Org recruits on the Apollo, circa 1968), the Basic Sea Org
Member Hat (most of the same HCO PLs of the Staff Status II course,
with some of the major FOs used by the SO). How long it took depended
on how quick a student you were; 2 to 3 weeks was average.

We had our own section of the 7th floor, about 15 or so recruits to a
room. Your bunk was inspected every day, with extra work handed out
if you flunked the inspection. On Sunday, before you could start your
1/2 day of libs, each room was given a white glove inspection by Andre
personally and nobody in the room could leave until Andre passed the
whole room.

Once you had completed the study section and were approved by Andre
you reported to your org. If you weren't doing well on the decks
section of the program Andre could hold you back after the study was
completed until he was satisfied with your work, but it was something
he very rarely did - he had to report a stat too. On Friday nights,
the same time graduation is held in an org Academy, the last week's
graduates would return for the swearing-in ceremony.
