After a system crash today, IE will no longer open links in a new window...
if I press Shift and click on a link or select "Open in new window" from the
context menu, I get a blank page and no link in the address bar. I had this
problem when I first installed IE 6, but read some suggestions of "Reset Web
Settings" and that fixed the previous problem... but this time I lost a lot
of settings which I had to modify in registry... example: before crash,
EDIT would open pages in Dreamweaver UltraDev 4.0... after crash EDIT opens
pages in Dreamweaver 3.0 which was an old setting of mine. I had also made
little changes such as customizing the BrandBitmap and Toolbar in the
registry... but after the crash, the returned to the default settings.

So I guess what I am looking for, is the registry string for opening links
in new windows so I can fix this problem. Anyone have any ideas???

Hello there,

Open in new window problems....
Have a look at these links for a start and follow the instructions in both:

Open In New Window" Does Not Work in Internet Explorer:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q180/1/76.asp

Internet Shortcuts in Outlook Express Don't Start Browser
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q177/0/54.asp

Also, some third party programmes that control pop up windows and advertisements can prevent this facility from working. Disable all third party internet related programmes and test.

Blank window problems:
You probably have a broken entry in file associations.

Go to my computer, view/folder options/file types.

Scroll down to the URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocols, click edit twice and make sure the following is in the application used to perform action box:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome

The same applies for URL:Gopher

DDE should be set to: "%1",,-1,0,,,,
Application should say: IExplore
DDE application not running should be blank
Topic should be: WWW_OpenURL

Note: If the IE repair tool is available to you (control panel, add/remove programs, highlight IE, select add/remove) - running a repair will often fix the above associations automatically.

Sandi,

You are awesome... thanks! That solved my problem partially. After
following instructions from the support site, I can now open links in
Outlook Express into new windows by pressing Shift, however in IE it still
opens into a blank window. I double checked my File/Folder settings (which
is a little different to get into in Windows 2000) and my settings are
identicle to what you have listed. I cross-posted my original post on the
IE6beta newsgroup since my problem is with IE as well as it was with OE...
hopefully someone there will have an idea or two. Thanks again for your
help.
