Which way do the western fans prefer to watch this series, dubbed or
subtitled? I see the DVD subtitled version sells for much less than the
dubbed so I wanted to know if there was a catch (ie picture quality,
etc.).. what do you recommend?

The DVDs should have _both_ subtitles and the English dub.

Before I was using subtitles because I thought that that was more authentic.
Lately I've been forced to watch the dubbed versions (the friend who gave me
tapes only had these versions) and it's not so bad, you don't have to do so
much concentrating on the reading to understand.

In IMHO i think the voice acting for the DVD movies, death and
rebirth, and end of evangelion is absolutly wacked, they put no love
inot to thier charactures what so ever, I've seen year 6 drama
students put more effort into their charactures. Not even to mention
that they 'couldn't find' some actors, WTF kinda responce is that,
they didn't even try to replace them with sound alikes, its was truly
a poor effort to say the least.

Give me the subtitled anyday

So Asuka repeating "I don't want to die" over and over isn't any effort
at all hmmm? And err, Shinji hated himself so it's obvious he had no
love. ;P

The fact that, sadly, most voice actors in America aren't taken (and
don't take) the job as seriously as they do overseas. Even Disney
couldn't get Robin Williams to reprise the Genie role for Aladdin until
like the 3rd OAV (and certainly wasn't able to do so for the TV series).

Just an example.. the fact that Manga was doing the movies instead of
ADV meant they had to redo all the lines, and we're lucky they got the
vast majority of actors for the English cast together again as it is.

Kaworu in the movies (dubbed) was better then the one in the TV series,
IMO. As for subtitled, well, nobody can really compare with Akira
Ishida. ;)

Yup.. the Kaworu they had in the TV series had some kind of accent or
something on his voice; the English movie one was much better acted and
spoken. I still can't get over the fact that the Japanese actor also
does the part of Xelloss in Slayers.. another character who is very
mysterious (and loved by fans despite his not-so-good nature).

*nods*

The replacement they got for Maya wasn't exactly the same either, but
she had that "innocent" quality to her voice which fit the character.

I just wish that Kaworu had raised his finger, winked, and said "Sore wa
himitsu desu" at least ONCE. Maybe when Shinji asked him something. Come
on, cross-series references are the best. :)
