I have a Fuji F601 which uses Smartmedia. I want to upgrade to the Fuji
F700 and it uses XD cards.
Any idea why there are so many cards? Is there any push to create 1
standard to make it easier for users?

The problem with Fuji's XD card most card readers and printers can't read
the XD. Just this week I saw a printer advertised that would take the XD
( the 7th type of card.)

Fuji and Olympus were the main users of Smart Media, however, they got
together and created the XD picture card to provide quicker download speeds,
decreased power consumption, and increased durability in a smaller package.
Smart Media will no longer be used which is why you will most likely not see
a Smart Media card that has a capacity larger than 128MB
There is no push to create a 1 for all standard as of yet because so many
different manufacturers and devices use different cards.
Canon uses Compact Flash and will continue to do so, accept for their
smaller cams, because they want existing Canon users which use CF to be able
to upgrade to another Canon and generate repeat business.
People may assume that Secure Digital will be the medium that will come out
on top since it is the format being used in most PDAs, MP3 players,
Camcorders, and many Digicams, however, there is already a release of a new
SD card that is slightly smaller.
Hope this helps..
