Because of the labour laws in place in Japan, the first thing you have
to do to get into the Japanese animation industry is to be born in

If you want to get into animation in general as a writer? This
page has some (slightly depressing) advice on people who want to write
spec scripts for animated feature films:
http://www.wordplayer.com/columns/wp22.Ink.and.Paint.html

Of course, that's mostly about the US animated movie biz. But I
think some of the concepts might transfer to TV as well.

If you can stand to take the really long road:

- Move to Japan and find a job.
- Get an artist or two and form your own "Circle". (Or DIY if your art's
good.)
- Publish an online manga. (This step is helpful but not necessary)
- Create a print version of your manga and sell it at Comiket.
- Pray that a major animation studio sees your circle's work and likes it.

btw, the above is only half in jest... been watching way too much ComiPa.

Special skill is the only way. And when Isay special skill I mean chouuu
special. Even with what I do I will not qualify. I'll give an example. I
sued to be a motion capture specialist. I wasnt really into it, it was just
something I could do. My buddy was really into and continued to develop his
motion capture skills. He moved to a few different companies ataining higher
mocap positions and mastering more software for the purpose. Now, he is on
his way to New Zealand to work on Return of the King! Special skill is the

Try contacting Don Bluth. He's as close as we'll come to anime in this
country. I heard he's making web films nowadays.

Well,
1: They're supposed to teach you...
2: There are plenty of ways to animate without being able to draw.

Second question first: yes, America.

First Question: Don Bluth is a former Disney animator who left in the late
'70s with several others to start making animated films of there own, rather
than the "saccarine crap" the House of Mouse was turning out at the time.
"The Secret of NIMH", based on the award-winning novel "Mrs. Frisby and the
Rats of NIMH" by Robert C. O'Brian, was their flagship production, released
in 1982, aginst numerous heavy-hitters at the box-office, particularly
"E.T."
Spielberg, however, was impressed with their work on "NIMH" and hired them
to create "An American Tail". Bluth and Co. have released about a dozen
films since then, the last film they did being "Titan A.E." which tanked at
the box-office, and left them homeless (metaphorically speaking). Last I
heard was they were going to produce films on the 'net. "Nuff said?

Vaughn L.Porter
Any other questions?

there are steps to animation that dont require
any actual image creation.

umm... then why not do that stuff?
or you could find a way to mix the two...
produce anime soundtracks?
be the music editor?
