My first reaction after the whole experience (meaning: start the DVD
with episode 1 and seeing the ending of episode 23 way too early) is
"WHOAH!". This is a MUST HAVE in my opinion, it really gives some more
details to certain scenes, it enhances the experience A LOT with extra
information and even the sound isn't as annoying as it was in
Death/Rebirth / EoE. Ofcourse this is a personal matter but I really
disliked the voice of Fiyutski *a lot* in the movies, fortunatly that
has been overcome here. Sure, some voices changed (Ikari, Ibuki and the
long haired guy (Huyga's colleague)) but its not as annoying since it
still reflects some of their personality.
I guess I can only advise you guys to take your time to view it if
you're picking this one up, its worth it.
Eva to the max IMO, a must have!
Now to wait for the 2nd DVD (released March 9, according to Amazon).

Wow, and I thought my copy took a long time after the release date to get
here. My thoughts on the DVD were slightly more subued. I watched them in
Japanese/English subtitles first and was happy to see that they had
soft-subtitled a lot of writing in the show. I was NOT happy, however, with
the overall quality of the translation. I think this may have been because
they were trying to make it more literal at the expense of readability and
literary merit.
After that, I gave some of the English dub, which I've never heard much of,
a listen. I thought that the voice acting was, at best, inconsistient.
Don't get me wrong -- some of the VA's are quite good, especially
considering that their source script is not always the best. Ritsuko was a
real low point. I thought that all the VA's at times sounded like they had
just walked off the Pokemon soundstage or something. I don't know how it
compares to the original series. It still isn't clear to me why they had to
re-record the entire eps just to add 6 or 7 minutes of extra footage,
though.
Now, on the other hand, the Director's Cut editions of these episodes are
indeed much, much better than the TV cuts. That alone makes it worth
buying. The interview with WETA was somewhat interesting, and hopefully is
a sign of things to come.
Oh, and one more complaint against ADV: automatic advertisements when you
insert the DVD. I already paid $20 for this, I don't think I need to sit
through two minutes of ads for the Anime Channel and Newtype USA *every
time*.
And, yes, I will be buying the next DVD, and the Evangelion CD's that are
finally being released in America.

well, you're a fan or you're not ;-) And its always nice to be looking
forward to something, so it wasn't that bad. I didn't even expected it
this weekend.

I can't understand Japanese therefor I can't comment on the translation.
However; the subtitles are indeed pretty stupid, if you start the DVD
with the first episode (23, my original message said 1 which is ofcourse
a typo) you'll see it go completely haywire in the scene on Antartica
(same rerun of Death/Rebirth sorta, I liked the way it was used as an
intro before the cartoon).

I think thats because they didn't remaster/redo the whole thing. I can
dream some scene's in 'tear' and after watching it and the original I
came to the conclusion that there is no other explenation that they have
used the existing soundtracks and enhanced it a little and added new
parts.

"different". Some scenes are a bit duller, yet I also feel it enhances
something to the experience. When looking at episode 23 (Fiyutski got
abducted) the SEELE personal are a little "noisy" in the original serie.
They yelled at him a little. In the director cut they are a bit 'held
back', which makes the whole experience more creepy in my experience.

Well... To put the new pieces into place. When you see Kaji & Fiyutski
walking around the corner of some building it really doesn't add up when
you have seen where they came from.

hehe, well.. I guess several people have several interests. I found the
interview boring, only the screenshots were appealing to me.
"Evanjellyon"... puhlease ;-)

I liked those. It reminded me of the times where you would rent/buy
VHS movies and it started with some commercials of other movies and/or
releases. And well; on DVD you can always press "menu" and get rid of
'm, but I somewhat found it funny.

hehe, I've already been waiting from Dec 15 so... Let Amazon bring it
on! ;-)
I'm pretty anxious to see the meeting between SEELE and Kaoru.

Heh, don't get me wrong, I don't speak Japanese either (though I'm slowly
working on changing that). But I thought that the impact of some of the
scenes were lost, like the end of the scene where Ritsuko destroys the
empty Reis: the translation doesn't even form a complete sentence, although
according to the Literal Translation Project it is pretty correct.

Well, I didn't want to mention that. Trying to stay positive about this.

Thanks for the tip, although I was under the impression it would lock you
out of advancing. I don't like it, though, because there *are* previews on
the DVD... available right under the "Extras" menu, where I can look at
them when I want to (and I have).
