3.2- 4 megapixels
longer life batteries(don't know much about these)

Suggest you take a look at http://www.dpreview.com
They have reviews and forums for many makes and models of cameras.
For the price range above, I would be inclined to go with olympus
cameras. Shop arround for the best deal.

After you work out what cameras you like/dislike in your price range take
note of the accessories... by this I mean
* what memory to they use (SD/CF/XD etc) do you need compatibility with
other equipment you already own?
* how much zoom do you require - getting a high power optical zoom now might
serve you better later. Disregard digital zoom.
* what sort of batteries does the camera use? If it's a unique battery pack,
then remember replacements will be a little expensive. Do you head "bush"
often and if so what will you do when your batteries are flat?
(I chose a Minolta Z1 primarily because it uses SD/MMC cards so I'm
compatible with other cameras and equipment that I have, and because it runs
on AA batteries. This means that I can use Alkalines in emergencies, however
I have a 12 volt charger for use in my car when I'm away from home anyway.)
Other things to look at would be interchangeable lenses if you want to get
really into it later on - but this is a fairly high price range.
Have a play with the cameras if possible and view the photos they take.
Some manufacturers have rather agressive compression algorithms and you
might not like the quality of the photos that the camera takes.

only 10MB - good for 5 hi-res pictures but.... it's OK for me now. Camera
accepts SD memory cards.
don't look for digital zoom ( sales pitch) look for optical zoom
