I'm looking for a good camera but I don't know anything about them: Could
anyone please give me a few things to look for?

I'm concerned mainly with detail and color accuracy. I'll also be using it
to make textures for the game called Unreal so quality is a must but I
really don't want to spend more then $400

Thanks

Mike

If you could spend $600, you could get an Olympus C-5050, which is
considered to have great color accuracy out of the box. Not absolutely
sure, but check the reviews on the Olympus C-4000; you can order them
over the internet delivered for about $375.

Looks good from the review at: dpreview.com/

I'll tell ya it's so hard to decide with all the cameras out there. You can
drive yourself nuts with all the technicalities. I think I just need to get
in a store and see some because I'm loosing my mind.

Check out the following link.

I think it would be best to use the digital buying guide from dpreview site
for starters.

Yes I had that link already along with this one http://www.dpreview.com/
Anyway Thanks.

I was looking at an Olympia C4000-zoom and the shots looked nice for a 4
mega pix 3X optical but I was kind of let down because there is a slight
blur in the images taken with it. Maby the guy was moving his arm around
alot when he shot it, Just a guess.

Otrher problem with this low end models is that they all try to reduce the
file size by compression which I'm trying to avode. Something tells me I'm
going to have to spend about $800 for my standards.

Take a look at the quality of this Canon, if I can get close I'll be happy

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_reviews/eos1ds.html

I guess I'm impressed mainly with the sharpness and color which is really my
biggest concerns but I know I'm not gong to get this quality spending 500.

By the way that new Sony DSC-F717 cost a mint and yet I'm not impressed with
the image quality. Funny thing is the review makes it sound so great but all
the shots looked blurry. Then again it could be the guy talking the
pictures. See http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscf717/

Only thing is, if you look at the review here about the same camara, it got
a good score but got some points knocked off becouse there is noise in the
images when using Auto-ISO http://www.dpreview.com/

Long article. I skimmed it twice and didn't see mention of that.
What page is it on?

But anyway AFAIK _ALL_ cameras in that price range (<$1000.00) will
do that. And pretty much the amount and frequency of said condition
is identical between models. This is the properties of the CCDs
used. /About/ the only way to get around this problem is to not
allow the user to use slow sutter speeds in low light situations
with the ASA pumped up. Sounds counter intuitive huh? But it
only sounds that way cuz it is.
So far, from what I've seen in
the world of digital cameras I haven't been able to figure out
why engineers ever opted to include signal amplification (ASA
settings) in the first place. I suppose it was to better simulate
thier emultion based brothers /and/ because chip manufacturers
included it in the specs. There are NR Filters but those remove
texture and detail from wanted surfaces so that's just the lesser
of two evils. Well, mostly lesser anyway.

I just bought the Sony DSC-717, So far this thing is amazing. I can't
believe how sharp the shots are. The dynamic range of the color is unreal
giving the price of this compared to the camera over a grand.

Check the samples out, the lenses are made my Carl Zeiss, I have to say I'm
impressed and I'm very picky

I think that page is broken or something (???). I get the thumbnail
proofs but when I click on any of them I get a server error page saying:

Error 404: Page Not Found
http://www.dpreview.com/misc/errors/notfound.asp?404;http:&&www.dpreview.com&gallery&default.asp?&default.asp

Sorry, that page doesn't exist on this server

hmm, just go to this link and look on the left side where it says Reviews
and look up the Sony DSC-F717
http://www.dpreview.com/

Then at the top you can choose samples from the dropdown list.
Last night I zoomed in on my hand and you an see every pore on my skin and
the color matching is excellent. You can also have your images captured in
the .Tiff format with No compression instead of .Jpg if you like. I F.cking
love this camara. there are a lot of nice camars out there but this one
should cost more then it doses thats for sure

Yup that worked. Thanks.

Well I can tell you're in love with your camera. That's a good feeling.
But I really think it produces pics of about the same quality as the
average to good model/makes in the same price range.

Nothing to do with this discussion really, but I personally try to avoid
anything with the word SONY printed on it. But that might be cuz I live
here in Japan and have done lots of inside business with them. Thus I
have seen a side of the company others may only dismiss as rumor.

:-O
