Because it seems like from a canon point of view, Shinji and Asuka
become a couple. Anno has alays stated that Shinji was representative
of him while he was in the depression and he has also stated that
Asuka is his favorite character. Plus...
SLIGHT SPOILER
in EoE, it seems to me at least, that Shinji picks Asuka.
END SPOILER
Also, Asuka is the one that's always in search of acceptance. Rei
does not require acceptance, she is merely content to be "existing"
(at least until the 16th Angel). Since Asuka and Shinji are both in
search of affirmation from others, it is not a stretch to imagine that
they would get it from each other.

The One I Love has a very good Rei/Shinji relationship, even if Shinji
did pick Asuka in the end. In fact, it might be the best S/R fan
fiction that I have read even if Rei was OOC. =(
IIRC, Variations on a Theme was R/S as well, but I don't remember
since I haven't read the story in quite a while.
Ummm...that's mostly it. Momento Mori has paired R/S up, but it's
mostly about the A/S relationship. It also makes you want to cry in
the corner for an hour after you go read it...and it takes 3 minutes
to read...
Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I haven't really read too many
R/S fics.
I just want to clarify that Anno was still in his so called depression
through the creation of NGE. Bottom line though is that he is crazy and
the depression has a good chance of just being a delusion.
Because she deserves it most?
Because it would mean the most to her to find them?

? As a stronger Rei fan that Asuka, I'd find that very debateable! :)
Without ranting about Rei's better points, and Asuka's lesser one's, I'd say
she just needs someone to open up more to. Refer to "The One I Love Is..."
Though out of character, the author did explore that idea somewhat.
> Because it would mean the most to her to find them?
And it wouldn't mean as much for Rei to find other reasons to live apart
from duty and compassion for others? It would be nice for her to discover
her own worth!
Z
o_0
"Nice" and "Means more" are two different things. Think of
it this way. Rei was raised in a sterile environment. The
closest thing she has to a family is Gendo (barf). She
doesn't really know what she's missing.
Asuka knows, though. She used to have a family, a mother
and father whose love she wanted to win. Her father
withdrew from her, and her mother... did the same in an
even more horrible way. SHE knows what she's missing.
She may have built her defenses up to the point that she
refuses to believe she's hurting ("I don;t need ANYBODY"),
but she is.
If she gets back what she's lost it wll mean more to her
because it will ease her pain as well as makes her
happy.
FW
Well, doesn't she deserve to be shown what she's missing? ;)
Z
That's true. However, she does not need it more than someone who has
felt compassion and the love of others.
For example, a person who is born blind will never see the beauty of
our world. It's a real shame. However, a person who becomes blind
through an artificial mean (injury, disease, etc.) will miss his sight
more than the person who was born without it because he has seen the
glory that our sight bestows upon us. He knows what he is missing and
thus, he will feel that much more pain for losing it.
Meanwhile, the blind man has never seen the world, so while it's still
tragic, he really isn't missing anything because he never had it in
the first place.
"The saddest thing in the world, is loving someone who used to love
you."
In a nutshell, this quote describes what I'm trying to say. It's
causes far more sorrow to have known love and to have lost it, than to
have never known it at all because simply put, you have more to lose.
So, you are saying that as long as you don't know that I'm stealing money
from you that it's okay for me to steal money from you? That as long as
Rei doesn't know what she is missing out on it's okay to let her miss out
on it? If you were in pain and I knew it was because your leg was infected
and would eventually kill you but you didn't know about it because the
nerves from your leg to your head and been killed by the infection that it
would be morally okay for me to not tell you about it?
So she's less human then someone who is more experienced with emotions and
needs?

Have you ever considered the phrase, "better to have loved and lost then
never to have loved at all!" Would you restore sight to the man who was
blinded in life before the one who was born without sight? Would you
really do that and deny a human the chance of ever seeing at all?
> "The saddest thing in the world, is loving someone who used to love

Or, "you can not lose something you don't have." Just to make your idea
simpler, easier on the conscious and so forth. It's crap, total and utter
crap. It's like trying to mathematically map the human heart(metaphorical
one). You can't do it. Bottom line is, better to have a little, then none
at all.
*twitch*
Plain?
Your mother dies in childbirth. Your birth.
Or...
Your mother dies when you are 15.
Which leaves you with the greater emotional pain and loss,
emptiness and sadness? If your mother was somehow
restored to you when you were 16, which 'you' would be
happiest: The one orphaned at birth who never knew a
mother's love, or the one who lost the most important
person in your life at a time when you were old enough
to understand what it meant?
Take as much time to think about it as you need.
FW
I think that Ayanami does kind of need it. If you think about it, when
others show to genuine kindness, it truly touches her heart. Think of her
response to the concern both Ikari's showed when her Eva went nuts.
Similarly, think of the few interactions between her and Shinji... Shinji
clearing her room, his attempts to casual conversation in the lift... her
talking to Toji about Shinji before his activation. Okay, maybe not Shinji
falling on her in the nude, but I'm sure you get my drift. :)
Ayanami seems to conceal her emotions, and many seem to forget that when it
comes to think about this.

I think you might be looking at it a bit too shallowly, but I'll refrain.
Personal reasons would make me look like a nutcase. And last time I said
something, Disaster said "Anger is Bad". :)
Z
I think that's taking it a little far. Rei does somewhat understand and
feel the need for such a connection. Even if she understands less of it in
a conventional sense.
We could argue that Asuka doesn't have a mature connection to guys either.
imho, she doesn't quite understand relationships either. However, she's not
the one who gets the short end of the stick most of the time now, is she?
Anyway... anyone who has looked at the thread found good Shinji/Rei fics? :)
I trawled fanfiction.net... and some of the stuff there is appalling! :\
Z
I said that? *Shrugs* I suppose it is.
I need no time, *hides watch* Do you think that life is a journey that we
can take without pain?Yes the pain is greater when you have had the
experience of joy. But it's worth having just as much. If I could choose
then with what I know today I would say give me my mother for 15 years and
then take her away. For I would rather have known her and shared my
childish love with her then to have the emptiness that would come with no
mother.
First, both of "you" would be happy. But the one who had never had a
mother would be happier of course. For here was the one thing that you had
been denied your entire life, the one thing you thought you would never
have.
Relax Z, this is not a hard argument to shoot down. Just as Rei is aware
of what she is missing so to does a child know that other children have
mothers.

I'm not advocating that Rei does not need love. However, she seems to
be able to live a perfectly normal (for her) life without affection
from others. It's not to say that she doesn't need it, but it's
impact of her is far less than it is with Asuka. It's one of the main
reasons why there's more A/S than there are R/S is because of that
reason.
I think that's a far more logical reason to assume why there's more
A/S than R/S as opposed to:
"A/S fans make better writers"
"R/S writers have a higher chance of being abducted by aliens than A/S
writers"
"More people like Asuka than Rei" is not a very (In my opinion, that's
blatantly false; most people I know like Rei more than Asuka. They
don't understand how I can like "that bitch" =D)
Did you JUST get here or something? The majority of People in the JAE like
Asuka. Whilst I consider that to be a mistake, it's true.
Next, the fact that more people like Asuka over Rei is the overriding
factor towards the unfortunate circumstance leading to more A/S fics then
R/S.
Rei does NOT lead a normal life, this should be a blatantly painful fact
to you and should invoke the sympathy required to realize that she needs
the love more because of this very fact. Not the complete opposite
attitude stating that because she's apparently emotionally dead, we don't
need to help her.
I sincerely hope that you are not, and never do become a doctor of any
kind or type either in practice or hobby, field or research.
I had a quick look through the fics I have and found the following
that might be what you're after:
New Mynds (Director's Cut) by Derek Zischke
Rain (Pioggia) by Rina-chan & Faby-chan
Opening The Future Doors by Rina-chan
You could say
ASUKA McBEAL by E.L. Toh
pairs Rei and Shinji, but I don't think you're after that.

I think he meant "normal" to Rei. To us, clearly no, but to her perhaps.
But I doubt she finds that much joy in life, which is the reason I go nuts
everytime yet another fic I trawl pairs Shinji with Asuka.

That's just the thing though Z. Normal to Rei is NOT normal. Normal of
course means the healthy average of the human population. Yes there is
such a thing, deviations from this norm' are a good thing of course but
extreme deviations are not. There's a safe zone if you will. Rei falls
close the edge of this I think. She lacks the tools necessary to express
her feelings and thus does not know how to deal with them. "Normal" to Rei
is not Normal, comes back to, Is it okay to kill you if you don't know
that you are alive?

You might want to consider hentai doujinshi. While most of
them are obsessed with who's doing what to who - and how many
times - the higher quality ones also explore the personalities
of the characters and what personal relations might work.
Also, I have nothing against Rei being happy. God knows,
it'd be an interesting change of pace for her. I just
think that, in terms of misery, Asuka is suffering more
than she is. And would benefit more from a change.
Rei excites my sympathy. Asuka has my pity.
Of course, if Rei, Asuka, and Shinji want to go off and
form a menage to be happy, that'd be fine with me too.
Maybe they could get a house near Tenchi's. Down
the street from the Tendo dojo. And vacation in
El Hazard in the summer. I'm sure they'd feel right
at home in such surroundings.
And I think Rei and Ifurita (OAV) would find they had a
lot in common.
Asuka, Ryouko, Shayla-Shayla, and Akane Tendo being in
the same room might be risky, though. One spark to
excite their tempers, and...

Errr... I'd disagree there I think... perhaps towards the end, yes... but
Rei's story is just so sad, such an empty, yet noble life. It deserves to

El Hazard, the OAV version. Ifurita is the pivotal
character, an incredibly powerful combat android
created to be an ultimate weapon. She has no
choice in what she does, she must obey whoever
holds her control key.
She has no hope of ever being free.
And her life is so unbearable all she wants to do is die...
Yes, I think she and Rei would get along VERY well.
FW
I do?
Of course not all hentai doujinshi is ALL hentai. There's
one frontpiece to an H-doujin I remember well, mainly because
it was so non-hentai and so darn CUTE! The Children as they
would have been at three years, chibi-Rei unbelievely kawaii
in a long flannel nightground and with ribbons in her hair,
holding a super-deformed Eva-00 doll. And watching poker-
faced as chibi-Asuka - angry, of course - was fighting with
a crying chibi-Shinji and trying to take his Eva-01 doll
away...
GOD they were all so cute you wanted to hug them forever!
Rei, especially.

Well, the main theme was anime groups in which the main male
character has a 'harem' whether he wants it or not...
Although many of those other characters (like Lina) have
powerful tempers, they're not part of such one guy-many
girl love triangles...

It sure is a long stretch between prereadings. Hell I don't even remember
what the fic is about, just that I had a hard time forcing some of the
changes! ;)
Hmmm, interesting, they don't have a bad site. Obviously successful. Don't
like the prizes thing. Oh I long for the day that I can put effort back
into my site! Maybe I can affiliate with this site as well.
Er, call it losing weight? heh.

They throw her down bottomless pits time after time, after she started a
dieing trend in the first episode, I doubt tying her down is gonna work.

....... You know this is Disaster right?
Well I choose my words rather carefully. A "Force of Nature" can be
anything as long as it follows the laws of physics, even for Anime. A
natural Hazard however is far more random and accidental!

I like Excel's reaction to the pupu's, "IT'S NOT NATURAL!"
If I remember correctly, I'd have to watch it again.
Actually, I missed seeing the name next to the post! ;;^_^

LMAO
I used to do that.
I have one of those wall scrolls. It's a collage of the characters and Rei is
naked and upside down in LCL.
-Fill my heart with song
And let me sing forever more...
John
You know that Gainax never came out with wall scrolls right? All of them
are rip offs.
Well, next time include the part of the post that you are refering to and
I'll let you know!
Trust me, John, it's no big deal. It's one of those "Six Degrees of
Separation" deals. Besides, the best couples generally seem to be opposites
with some things in common, thus Shinji/Asuka makes a little more sense than
Shinji/Rei. But, hey, whatever floats your boat.
Vaughn L.Porter
Of course,
Shinji/Rei=Luke/Leia
You could also argue that Rei is calm enough to allow a relationship to
develop without any destructive confrontation.
> Vaughn L.Porter
> Of course,
> Shinji/Rei=Luke/Leia
Er, huh, nooooooooooooooooooo! I don't think so!
Whoa, I had no clue. At the very bottom of the wall scroll, it says "(Copyright
sign)GAINAX/Project Eva" and then some stuff in katakana I think.
-Fill my heart with song
And let me sing forever more...
John
Er... You're sure about that? ^_^;
Yeah I'll bet it does. Was talking to Mike in Sydney once looking for wall
scrolls myself. Mike runs an international route between Australia, the
UK, the US and Japan. He more or less ripped my head off about the
scrolls. Frankly I'm more willing to trust in someone who knows what they
are talking about rather then a few words at the bottom of something
that's most likely a fraud.
That's what Mike said Olivier! Miek is the guy who runs the Cartoon
Gallery in the QVB in Sydney. The one thats runs over to the US, UK and
Japan to get his stuff. Unless something has changed in Gainax's product
runs since I spoke to him then I think it's likey that he's still right.
I'll admit that it has been a while since I spoke to him though.
Ok, ok, it's just a joke, I didn't mean any harm.
Seriously, though, I had a thought at work today (which shows how much time
I have on my hands). Why aren't there any Shinji/Mana fanfics out there?
(Mana Katahari(?) is the girl from the Iron Girlfriend game, for those who
don't know what the h*ll I'm babbling about)
I mean, I've seen only one fanfic with her making a cameo (to slap the sh*t
out of Asuka at Shinji's funeral), are there any other stories with her?
Personally, a Shinji/Asuka/Mana love triangle would be very entertaining!
Anyway that's my two cents American.

Will Work for New Computer
Oh yeah, funny for you maybe, how do you think Shinji feels having all
that pressure to perform thrust upon him? Further how do you think Leia
feels being compared to someone she most certainly does not resemble!?
Yeah, funny for you, you inconsiderate bastard! :P

I thought that there were more Mana fics out there! Don't know why I
thought that though.

Well, untill Fanfiction.net is back up, I guess I'll have to haunt YOUR
SITE!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

Don't mind me, It's Monday.
*Roll's eyes*
I know what kind of author you could be, I mean apart from a bad one! You
could be one of those infamous authors that produce copious amounts of
material for authors like Mark! ;P

Dis'n your own site? You've got some cool stuff there.
Vaughn L.Porter
I'm a poet an' didn't know it
but my feet did, they're Longfellows!
It's an insult of course! I'm so perfect that I really can't see anything
to complement others for! Just ask Morgan! ;P~

Hmm I do it so I can hear other people tell me I have cool stuff on it! ;)
I bet yer the one who voted for Gendo and Kozo! I can't believe that there
are two people who did that! Or at least one person who did it twice!

No no no, it leaves Rei for *me* :) I personally favour Shinji/Asuka as
it is truer to the series; however I basically want Rei to get what she
wants, so if Rei wants Shinji, then I say, genetics be damned.
Richard
Perhaps Rei did get what she wanted! Have you ever thought about that?

I think, in the series and the movie, she did get what she wanted; I was
thinking more along the lines of the various fanfics I've read lately
(btw, "Higher Learning" was great!)
Richard
I see :)
Hear hear.
But what DOES Rei want, does she really really want? That's the
question. ^_^
It's not as if we have a whole lot of data on that. For all
we know, Rei might want...
(brain glitch. And a sudden mental image of Rei standing on
a stage saying "Silly business, really. I never wanted to
be a world saver/destroyer/Key to Instrumentality. No, what
I really wanted to be was...
A lumberjack.
Oh, I'm a lumberjack and I'm O-Kay...")
FW. Who really should get more sleep, sometimes...
O_o;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
Plus from a writing point of view it would seem to make sense that Anno
would just try and steer clear of that whole situation. Asuka is
obviously Shinji's kindred spirit. And for better or worse, Rei is too
much Yui for that whole situation to not elicit (more) death threats.
Richard
This sounds like it's more suited to a new thread. So I'm gonna copy your
comments to a new thread. For future reference pls post your replies on
the bottom.
Nope, Misato and Kaji; After Shinji and Asuka, they're my favorite couple. A
close third would be Touji and Hikari.
Vaughn L.Porter
So there, Mr. Perfectionist.
So you voted for your 2nd favourite couple?
