I dunno, there are definitely issues there. To varying degrees, Shinji
attempts to find a mother in both Misato and Rei whilst at the same
time being attracted to both of them sexually.

Then there is the symbolism of Shinji 'penetrating' his mother with
his 'entry plug' and feeling at ease when 'inside' her...

I wouldn't put too much stock in that, especially with the parallels in
Asuka and Rei. It seems more like a "return to the womb" analogue.
