constant taunting. If it wasn't making me feel all so inferior I'd jump
up and say "I'm as mad as hell and not going to take it anymore", but I

It does pain me that I couldn't take the real Japan, and had to drop out and
settle for this pale shadow. Sometimes, as I watch the sun sink into the
azure sea, sipping awamori and listening to the breeze rustle through the
sugar cane, I feel a pang of nostalgia for the black, sludgy waters of
Nagoyakou.
But we all have our crosses to bear. I try to bear mine taking an example
from the English, by keeping a stiff upper lip and drinking way too much
alcohol.

"I have just back from Okinawa and I can say the trip was great! Nice weather,
besutiful ocean and especially food is great.
Okinawa is the southern-most island in Japan as you know. It was still very hot
nearly 30 degree. It is under 15 dgree at my city [in Aichi] so you can imagine
how hot! I could hear cicadas sound.
In Okinawa, there are lots of special fruits which are I cannot easily buy in
main land of Japan. Like Dragon fruit, Star fruit etc... they are so juicy, so
tasty!!
I went to historycal places, Shuri Castle, Himeyuritower and so on. Okinawa has
a very different culture as main land of Japan. Even I do not understan what
people say. It is like a foreign country. I think everything in Okinawa is very
similar to Taiwan."

You resided in minato-ku? For some reason I thought your previous hotel
was further from the black sludgy stuff.

My wife's sister lives in minato-ku. That was the first place I stayed in
Japan.
We lived in Obu, so made it out to Shinmaiko once in a while. Slightly less
sludgy, but it made up for that with the fumes rising up from the industrial
waste used for landfill.

Perhaps it has escaped your notice that the others weren't gleefully
excoriating each other for (perceived) newbieness when you climbed
into the sandbox with us. You're the one who jumped in with both feet
whipping your old-timer wienie around for all to worship and admire.
Unfortunately, Bryce, that really doesn't mean shit around here. My
personal opinion is that the amount of time a person has been in Japan
is a reliable indicator of one thing and one thing only: the amount of
time a person has been in Japan. If it makes you happy, that you were
here in the 80s has been duly noted and recorded. But in a group where
not only were a lot of us here *in* the 80s but have been here pretty
much constantly *since* the 80s (or before?), that fact that you began
your bouncing in and out of the place back then really doesn't count
for much.
Those who actually *have* been here for entirely too long, have long
ago figured out that it really doesn't signify anything and in itself
is deserving of no particular awe from anyone. Being proud of having
been in Japan longer than others is sort of like being proud of being
the tallest kid in the second grade. It isn't an accomplishment; stay
in the second grade long enough and anybody can do it.
Consequently, putting others down for not having been here as long as
one's self is boorish, insecure, locker room wienie wagging. You come
in here swaggering about as though you think you must have a kielbasa
slapping from thigh-to-thigh, the THWAP!s echoing off the tile of the
fjlij shower walls, yet the content of what you say leaves us
scratching our heads and wondering why the guy with the cocktail frank
is vigorously shaking his crotch in our faces.
It's nice to have you with us, Bryce. You spice the place up. You're a
colorful and engaging guy. But let's quit putting down others for not
having gotten here when you did. I'm sure if the other parties had

They are playing at the Showbox in Seattle this next Tuesday. My wife is
going crazy. It fits about 600-700 people. She dragged me to a concert of
theirs in Japan once but it was like 50,000 people and we were a mile away.
This ought to be quite interesting.
I bet their lighting and such was much better down in Vegas. I'm wondering
how they will handle it in such a small environment here. I guess we'll see.

energetic, especially Koshi. I was actually pretty impressed.
Can't imagine a 50,000 person crowd though. :) I think this venue had a
1000+ maybe. Koshi joked about being in America and yet the whole audience
(save myself and about 10 others) were Japanese :)
In that small of a place I think it was a great show.

coming statesite just so they can say they "had a world tour" on their
brochures in Japan. Because if you think about it, who the hell is going to
go and see them outside of Asia? Well, I'm just going to make my wife happy
anyways, most of the shit I know is just through kaoroke anyways. I'm also
thinking that the crowd in Seattle will be 99% Japanese and Korean.

How did you get so many, if you've been back and forth to Japan so few times?
Since I go home once, twice or more each year for these ten years, and have
visited before I lived here, I've been more than that, but don't believe I have
that many stamps.
