Eva's Souls

I was wondering how the Eva's actually got their souls. I originally
thought that Yui's soul was trapped during the activation test when
she was partially absorbed by the Eva. Similarly Asuka's mother
Kyouko's soul entered Unit 02 during her test with the Eva and that
was what led to her madness.

But thinking about it further, there seems to be a few problems with
this. First off, why would the initial activation tests that Yui
performed be in Unit 01 and not 00? Presumably you would test your
prototype unit before building a second one, even if the second is a
test type.

Second, if A.T. Fields are a reflection of your soul then shouldn't
Kyouko have lost her physical form (reverted to LCL?) after her soul,
and thus her AT field, was lost during her own activation test mishap
(as happened when Shinji was absorbed). The Red Cross booklet says
"...it is these A.T.Fields that separate humans from each other and
give them their physical forms."

On the other hand, none of the dummy Reis had souls and they all had a
physical form, although they were basically inanimate. And if Rei has
Lilith's soul then Lilith must have no soul of her own anymore and she
maintains her physical form.

Any theories on how the whole system works? You can't copy a soul, but
can they be split? Does the original owner of the soul have to be
alive when the soul is transferred or can NERV/SEELE store the souls
of dead people somewhere?

Well remember dead people don't always lose their form, it was onyl when the
Reis came and turned their dead bodies to lcl, remember all teh dead people
at the NERV HQ after the invasion.

But do you lose your soul if you're dead? and can you live without
your soul?

perhaps it's just a case of Gainax playing fast and loose with
continuity???
