I live in Japan (region 2). I want to purchase DVD in US (region 1). Can
someone suggest a way to view region 1 DVDs purchased in US on a region 1

What is the brand and model number of your player?

Some of them have codes you can enter via a remote to change the region code.

Eiden tax-free in Nagoya had region-free, multi-voltage, PAL/NTSC
compatible DVD players for 17000 yen the other day - they'll deliver
I'm sure. Here's their address:
EIDEN DUTY FREE OSU

TEL:052-242-8595 FAX:052-242-8509

They speak English BTW.

NO - I didn't buy one for the trip to the UK - I DID buy a hot-water
pot - though frankly the concept of NOT putting the kettle on is a
little lost on my parents.

There are dozens of web sites telling you exactly how to do this. It depends
a little on your model, so I cannot give you exact information. But I would
suggest a google search using the model name and some other keyword such as
"region" or "international"

Sometimes it involves opening up the machine and changing a switch.
Sometimes it can be reprogrammed using a remote control. I saw one instance
in which the remote that came with the model would not do this, but a guy
picked up a different remote at HardOff for about 200 yen and used that to
reprogram his DVD.

Thanks to your info and URL on multi region DVD player. The LG Region-Free

some complicated procedure I must perform hardware-wise to make it all

Put the CD-ROM (included with your purchase) in
the machine and follow the directions. That's it.

Thank you Bryan.

Very specifically I am thinking of purchasing "The Sopranos" DVD in US
during my visit there in October. I understand it is in the 4th season so I
plan to purchase Season 1 thru the most currently available DVD series.

From what I understand, there is really no guarantee that a region 1 DVD
disk would actually work on a region free player and the only way to find
out is to try it.

I am beginining to consider buying a region 1 DVD player in the US and bring
it to Japan. This way it is guranteed that I can view The Sopranos.

Does anyone know whether a US DVD player would work in Japan provided I
purchase the proper voltage converter. I assume there is no problem with
frequencies difference like that of TV.

My understanding is that they were working on Season 6.

It is also my understanding that Seasons 1 through 4 are readily
available on Kazaa.

You are very welcome.

Now allow me to UNintroduce you to Kazaa. If you are using it, please
uninstall it immediately. Then visit http://www.kazaalite.tk/ and
download and install Kazaa-Lite instead. You will still be connected
to the same file-sharing network, but you won't have any spyware
installed on your computer and there won't be any advertisements sent
to your computer.

Just be aware that virtually all files obtained through Kazaa are stolen
from someone. If you are going to be a thief, that is your business. I
just thought you should be aware in advance.

A DVD player bought in the USA (region 1) will work perfectly well in
Japan, as long as you play region 1 discs on it. A power transformer
is cheap (around 2500 yens).

Points to consider:
- cost to carry back as luggage, or ship as parcel
- your US warranty most likely won't be honoured in Japan
- parts might be hard to find in Japan, unless the same model exists
on sale domestically (as a region 2)

The first day you want to play a region 2 DVD, you'll regret having
imported this region 1 deck. You'd be better off buying a region-free
deck, though there is a slight risk with compatibilty issues (software
issuers are trying to make their discs not play at all on a region
free machine).

Just to nitpick, infringement has a legal definition and set of
ramifications that are quite distinct from those for theft (let alone those
for piracy). For example, there are many situations where copyright
infringement is perfectly acceptable. Further, there are many files on
Kazaa placed there by their copyright owners with the full intent they be
shared as widely as possible. Lastly, it is not the user's responsibility
to verify whether such material has been infringed, just as it is not the
radio listener's responsibility to screen out songs that haven't earned the
royalties they should.

Now, providing material for *uploading* is a different matter...

I think you have your analogy wrong. Kazaa is more like a guy selling
electronic equipment out of the back of a van in an alley at ten cents
on the dollar ... the presumption is that the material has been
illegally obtained and is being illegally distributed, with the
exceptions being rare.

I don't quite follow this. I have a region 2 DVD Japanese player and a
US region 1 player here in the US. The region 2 player happily runs on
US electricity, and I presume my region 1 player would like Japanese
electricity just fine. My video switcher has inputs from my US
DVD/LD/VCD player, my Japanese DVD/VCD player, the cable box, the VCR
connected to the A-cable analog feed and the VCR connected to the
B-cable analog feed. Adding the region 2 player to the mix cost me $80
bucks. What am I supposed to regret?

Let me add something that can save you from getting into trouble...
If you just install Kazaa (or the light version), you still have all the
downloaded files sit in your "Shared Folder"... which means that everybody
can download from your machine, I think that this is the default setting in
Kazaa.
While nobody bothers if you store some oldies, there are other files which
can land you in prison.
If you happen to download a couple of commercial Microsoft and Adobe
programs, some brand new music albums, etc., you are illegally "selling"
them for free to the world without having a clue what's going on!
Either you disable sharing (which is against the spirit of using Kazaa), or
you move certain downloaded files immediately out into another folder. Many
peer-to-peer users apparently don't know about this danger....

The third advise would be forking out a lot of money to buy everything you
desire... like me. That's also the reason why I am so poor to be forced to
use Kazaa...:-)

There is another system available, it's called Bryan Parker. Just email him your
request and he'll find it, usually within 24 hours. He's been very reliable so
far but lately he's let me down getting some unusual Austrian music.

Place a check mark in the box "Disable sharing of files with other
users". Nobody can see what files you have and no one can get them.

Of course, it also makes you a one-way freeloading bastard, but it
does eliminate the concern you mention.

Don't lots of P2P users refuse to upload files to people who disable
file sharing?

I wouldn't know about this personally, of course. But I think I remember
hearing something to that effect.

Also be aware that Kazaa Lite is "stolen".
Fotunately enough, Sharman Networks, owner of
Kazaa has a game plan -
Sue for copyright infringement.

I have a Sampo 620 I bought when I was still in the U.S. and using the info on www.area450.com I made it region free. Plays every Japanese DVD I've rented so far and there's now problem with voltages. It handle it automatically. Most stuff these days do. There's also another page, www.dvdrhelp.com with plenty of info on which players can and can't be made region free and how. Have fun.

I went to Costco, paid the 4000Y subscription fee, just to find out

The 10 to 20V difference between North America and Japan may end up
damaging your equipment if not using the proper power transformer. It
depends on how the internal power supply was designed, specifically
how it can dissipate the extra energy coming from the higher voltage.
Considering how cheap a tranformer is, it is not worth taking the
risk.
