Would Evangelion be less interesting without the sexy women?

Part of the appeal of Evangelion is definitely in the sheer number of
incredibly sexually attractive female characters featured in the series.

Whether it's Misato, with her fine ass and jiggly E-cup breasts bursting out
over every top she wears, Ritsuko with her tight tops, short skirts, fishnet
tights and stilletto heels, Asuka with her tight plugsuit and underage
spunkiness, Maya with her cute boyishness or Rei just being Rei, you can't
deny that the chicks make a huge impression, especially on the men that
watch.

My question is this - would Evangelion be as popular/interesting without all
that eye candy, those bountiful breasts, those firm buttocks, those long,
sexy legs, that beuatiful hair?

The series provides something for the brain and something for the penis,
which I think is quite a happy medium.

I just have a feeling that NGE wouldn't have been such a cult favourite
without such sexual content to grab the viewer's attention.

What do you think?

I'll put it this way. As a heterosexual woman, I have had a very difficult
time getting interested enough in NGE to get past about five episodes. The
only episode I wanted to see again was the early one in which the other boys
blamed Shinji for the destruction only to have to take cover in the cockpit
and witnessing the toll it took on Shinji. That was an emotionally moving
episode. If one of the major things a show has going for it is that it
appeals to the penis, then that's a pretty poor show.

Don't get me wrong, Eva is a deep and dramatic series with plenty of
symbolism and lots of potential for discussion, but I don't think that it
would be anywhere near as popular without the women (who are like a walking
wet dream).

Shinji is like a self-insert for the fans. He's surrounded by chicks - one
for every taste.

Misato - slut
Ritsuko - dominatrix
Asuka - spunky
Rei - submissive
Maya - token lesbian (threesome potential)
Hikari - wifey

The writers use Misato's wonderful body (mainly) in the beginning as a hook
to attract the teenage fans by nurturing the fantasy of living with a
big-titted, slutty older woman who will do ANYTHING with them when drunk.

Fanservice always helps - obviously. Unfortunately, it's often all that's
needed to make a show popular. But...

In Evangelion, the fanservice is an add-on. And it's not *that* obtrusive.
Why would fanservice make an otherwise good show automaticall poor? Seems
to me like you're making a needlessly big issue of it. Of course it may
simply be that the other main points of the show simply didn't appeal
much to you, which I can understand.

Misato has a big scar between her boobies.

Nope. Thats how most anime becomes popular much to Posthumandude's
chagrin. Thats right I am going to push this psuedo rivarly for all its
worth

Although most of what it provides for the brain is overrated psychobabble.

It's really depend on the viewers' taste and stuff I suppose. Personally I
think the show is ok(not much of a fan myself) but Gainax girls are
nice........:) Besides, why do you think they pimp out so many stuff like
figures, books and games...etc if they're not the main attractions? The
girls are Gainax' cash cows........

Those are included in the game catagory.:) Seriously the girls are big part
of the series. I mean how often do you actually see an official release of a
strip card game(adult title......not just NGE girls but also Gunbuster
too.......let's just forget/not talk about the guys in it.:) from
studio/company who made the series? I don't think I've ever seen another
case at all.......

NGEva started out pretty slow.
IIRC, the popularity didn't explode till later in the series.
(Remember, it wasn't based on any prior work,
so nobody had any idea where it was going - no expectations.
And Gainax wasn't yet really "big" then too.)
I even remember many fans here being initially turned off
by the "skinny mecha" (back then, studly mecha was the rage).
My univ anime club showed the first 6 eps the first night
due to the slow start.

I don't think so. But then again, I also don't think they put them in
sherely for the men; the women in there also add a lot to the emotional
moments in NGE which in itself makes up a big part of the series.

I must admit the daemon of hentai dwells in my soul, thus making anime
shows with fan service more "interesting", but still I need more than
that to watch certain shows.

I watch NGE for the story mustly, though I like shows with more
(mecha) action (it is my believe you can have equal quantity of action
and character development on a show). NGE is certainly a very
interesting show to watch, even without the added bonus. The way they
handle the issues of religion from an earthy point of view is amusing
to me. The way they use facts and legends and blend them into the
story. This is the reason I torment myself so much to get the whole
series on DVD. Its a must have show for me!

And the giant robots fighting giant space monsters appeals to the
adult in you, does it? Eva has all the trappings of a show for twelve
year olds no matter how pretentious it might be.

And yet I can take them seriously, unlike, say, the former Playmate that

something about me, too.

True, but I think the larger problem here is your choice of words. Most
of the content that you make up here is due to an obsession over the
characters, giving them fantasy personality traits that are barely
present, if at all, in the series itself. Cases in point are many of
discussions in this forum along the lines of "Would Rei/Asuka do ___?"
And I'm not talking about fanfiction here so much as one's view of the
characters reflects more on oneself than the actual content of the show.

And it's not like they're made so just for the viewer: look at how
Shinji responds when he's put into situations around Asuka, Rei, Misato.
These are essential plot devices.

> My question is this - would Evangelion be as popular/interesting without all

Maybe not for you. I can't speak for the whole audience. But the thing
about anime is that it's quite hard to draw *bad* looking characters,
especially if that's not reflected in their personality. They are, after
all, not ordinary humans.

One could argue the same thing about Baywatch, but I was never drawn
into that enough to watch more than five minutes.

> What do you think?

I think I lost all respect for GAINAX as a company when they started
selling this:

http://www.gainax.co.jp/goods/cat_3.html

One wonders how much interaction the merchandisers have with the
creators of the series.

I also think this post has lost any focus. Sorry.

The Qunt isn't a troll, he's just...well...a braindead, annoying,
sex-obsessed little cunt.

Kinda like Psaiyan and goat.

Right. Since I'm female and heterosexual, this thread wasn't meant for
me, but I'd like to comment anyway.

You bring up a point that's always bothered me, Drinian. I can't
understand why fans want to characterize EVA's human female characters
as "perfect women". I don't think of "cute" or "spunky", or any other
words with frilly feminine connotations when I look at them. Instead,
I see tortured, screwed-up characters that are on many levels just as
bad as Shinji.

I guess you could say those who idolize EVA's females look at their
bodies rather than their personalities, but I'd like to believe it's
not that simplistic. There are plenty of anime and manga out there
which have attractive female characters without mental problems, so
I'm wondering why so many turn to Evangelion.

Agreed. Not to mention that they are complex characters in their own
right, which to me should elevate them slightly above mere eye candy
that could be removed and only the sex appeal leaving.

I don't know *what* made EVA a cult hit. But there are plenty of anime
with more fanservice and pretty girls that hasn't reached cult status,
so I'm thinking it's not just that. Though Gainax has certainly
captialized on the popularity of most EVA females.

I could see the pretty pictures, but not make any sense of the text since
it's in Japanese. No, I don't want a full translation, but can someone
tell me what the merchandise is? That is, are they small figurines, say
a few inches to a foot high, life-sized dolls (seen pointers to them
before), or what? And yeah, some things like that do just seem a little
too weird.

>> Thank god they don't exploit the underage female characters.

I assume you're being sarcastic because Rei and Asuka are both 14 IIRC.

>And I am surprised they don't have strokin action Shinji.

So are the ones listed poseable action figures? Does Shinji have enough
fans to warrant that much merchandise of him, let alone what you've
mentioned?

No, you're probably not alone. But I didn't. I'm fairly certain that
this came up a while ago when he first started posting and he explained
that this is his actual, given name. I believe he also described where
the name Qunt derives from and probably a pronunciation (because I think

Because of market saturation. It's mainstream, it's "kewl" (even though it
isn't), and it's usually the first anime most of these horny little boys see

But to a degree, that probably *IS* the point. Which is hard to wrap our
minds around, seeing as how in *our* side of the world, for instance, a
certain Company Founded by A Guy With Initials W. D. is on eternal orange
alert to prevent any representation of its precious trademarked characters
and copyrighted works from being used in any sense other than the finest and
most wholesome, and then ONLY upon payment of the proper royalties and fees.

Consider Sanrio's Hello-Kitty "muscle massager". Or the
officially-sanctioned EVA adult products under discussion. Apparently they
view "trademark integrity" differently Far out East.

On top of that, in EVAs case remember Gainax has this self-established image
as an Otaku-born outfit -- it's in perfect character for *GAINAX* to do this
to its own creations, essentially saying: "hey, we KNOW you hentai are going
to go ahead and do this to the characters *anyway*, so now WE go ahead and
do it, in the process milking some more money out of the property."
Because, of course, in the final analysis the reason Rei, Asuka and all the
other representations of those fictional characters exist
*In*Our*Real*World* is to make money for Gainax. NGE was not a Public
Service Announcement.

I have seen other pictures of those figurines, that showed the process of
putting them together and painting them.

They are basically resin unposeble model kits, that come in several
pieces and in a solid grayish white color. It would talk a whole lot of
work and skill to get them to look as good as those on the Ganix pages,
with trimming, assembly, and painting.

I can pick out that they are in the 1/6 to 1/8 scale range, about 21 to
30 cm tall which would be 8" to 12" tall and cost about $80 to $240 US
dollars.

In which case I'd guess that those who chose his personal name A) hated
him, B) had a *very* twisted sense of humour, or C) had absolutely no
grasp of common slang.

I'd also be more inclined to believe him on this if the post itself

sincerity in the matter.

Thanks. Someone else said they were kits, too. Definitely not the kind
of thing I'd want. I don't have anywhere near the required skills to make
it look that good. The little snap together Gundam models are about all
I can do. :) If I were going to buy something like that, I'd rather get

Wow, that much? Why are the kits so expensive? You have to build and

Yeah, I guess you're right. It's not like Eva was overflowing with shots
of panties and cleavage constantly. There are some shots like that,
usually involving Misato as I recall, but I don't there are so much that
it really draws attention away from the main story. Not for me, anyway.
Sure, I notice the fan service shots and I like seeing them, but they
weren't the focus of my attention. BTW, you also have the girls in their
skin tight plugsuits; that could be considered another form of fan service.
But whether or not there was much of it, I thought it was really funny
that Misato routinely advertised more fan service in next episode previews.
:)

But that's the *point*! Model kit otaku don't want something mass-produced,
they want a unique piece.

There's a nice shot where you can see right up Ritsuko's skirt and
another where she's climbing through a duct and her ass fills like 75%
of the screen. There's loads of Asuka fanservice in the early episodes
too (ep9 springs to mind, as well as the swimsuit and 'thermal
expansion' scenes in ep10).

As for the Reiquarium, it's definitely a matter of taste as to whether
you consider it to be sexy or not...

I love the way Kotono Mitsuishi says "service service" in the
previews... ^_^

Partly: what ELL said.

Partly it's an object lesson in economies of scale (the lack thereof, to
be precise). Because of the difficulty of actually building and painting
the things, the market is so small that the price per item is
commensurately higher.

When I was in Otsu last summer in a little shop there was a finished
Kanzaki Akari (from Battle Athletes) resin figure I would love to have had,
but it was around $160.00. So I had to pass and just get the plastic Rei
figure (the one with the interchangeable heads and arms, can't remember the
brand right now) for a cheap $30.00. (That is what the price tag said in
katakana..chipu)

In part I think they cleverly hit all bases with Evangelion, from cheesy
fanservice through giant robots to angst-filled characters and
mysticism.

As for the females, I think it's precisely the complexity of their
warped psyches which makes them more appealing, as it makes them three
dimensional unlike the shallow bimbos you see in some series. When you
listen in on Rei's thoughts you glimpse great and murky depths that
leave you wanting to know more; physically she has perfect poise and a
beautiful figure yet her flat is like something from otaku hell and her
soul is an enigma hidden inside a mystery. To Shinji she seems cool and
courageous, but seen from the inside those same facets of her
personality come across as suicidal despair. I think a lot of people are
drawn to characters who let them explore these dark paradoxes that they
have probably glimpsed inside their own lives from time to time.

Yes.

This is, after all, Gainax (after whom the infamous bunny and the
equally infamous bounce are named after) we're talking about.

Character development, plot, mystery, religious symbolism? All B.S.
Even Misato freely admits the importance of fan service in the next
episode previews.

Sadly, horny men still comprise the large majority of anime audiences
(as well as the large majority of anime _produces_, for that matter),
and therefore the artwork will tip towards that end.

Not quite.

You see, the Hello Kitty massager is deliberate. It's INTENTIONALLY designed
for that purpose.

The electronic Nimbus 2000 by Mattel was just a plain poorly thought out
marketing concept. The toy engineers at Mattel were told to come up with
something HP-related that did electronic stuff, came up with that, and
apparently nobody at Mattel thought about the implications of the vibrating
broomstick until customer reviews and complaints about it started cropping
up.

And, incidentally, you'll notice that nobody except the novelty and smartass
stores SELL the thing anymore, because Mattel recalled it :P

That this actually worse is, I think, arguable (though anyone who'd care
enough about it to invest the time and energy plainly has *no* life). It
is, however, quite easily equally bad.

Anyway, who is Nuku^2 anyway?

Many people forget that "Nuku" are - no matter how you want to see it -
not less than TWO characters, and therefore the ^2 only squares the last
one. (Nuku)^2 would be correct. Same with Pen^2, which is Penn. These
people actually mean (Pen)^2.

The only response I can think of to those figurines is "Only in Japan"
I know that Gainax are big on fan service and probably get most of
their merchandise from selling goods with the girls and women from
their series. But really this was just taking fanservice a bit too
far. The ones with Asuka and Rei in their plug suits were okay. I
didn't even really mind the one with Rei in the mini-skirt, top, and
Gainax "fuck-me" boots. I would never buy it but if someone else did,
all the power to them. But who needs the pornographic figurines of Rei
and Maya? Especially the first one on the page which looks like the
designer got the position from a doujinshi or porno video.

Thiugh now that I hvae seen them, I have a morbid desire to know how
many Gainax has sold? And who buys them?

I agree with both of you. While the Eva women might be as attractive
as two-dimensional pieces of celluloid get, their personalities have
serious contradictions and flaws. On the outside Misato appears to be
somesort of male fantasy. She's beautiful, wears form fitting
clothing, has an outgoing personality, drives sports cars, seems
carefree, drinks alot (note: She reminds me of characters from bad 80s
romantic comedies which take place in LA or SoCal) However the
audience should be like Shinji and realize that her outward
personality and appearance hide someone who is dealing with many major
psychological issues. Same witth Asuka and Ritsuko. Well at least
Ritsuko's pyschological coping methods are being cold and distant, and
completely professional.

I really don't think being in character was much of a concern for
Gainax when they decided to make these figurines. It was probably the
last thing considered. If someone complained at a meeting that the
figurines were out of character, they were probably fired on the spot.
Something like this:

Gainax employee x: These figurines might sell but they really cheapen
the series.

pasuse

Gainax employee x: Im fired, right?

Big Gainax CEO: Yup.

First of all I don't think I would ever describe myself as "horny" to
anyone even my brother. I really dislike the word it is too Frat
boyish. I always think of undereducated, white guys who drink too much
alcochol, care about sports too much, and listen to really bad rock
like Limp Biskit, when I here the word "horny" The other thing I think
of is the "Me so horny" scene in Full Metal Jacket.

I don't think I have ever heard a woman actually describe herself as
"horny" But I do know many women who speak very openly about their sex
lives and the physical attractivness of guys. I can think of many
times when I have been hanging out with a female friend alone (note:
these aren't dates) where a guy has passed by and my lady friend
blurts out a statement descrbing the guy as a 'cutie', 'hottie' or
'really fuckable'

I also know many women who think it is a perfectly acceptable reason
to see a movie if it stars a hottie like Jake Glyeenhal, Josh Harnett,
or Toby Maguire. I wonder how they would react if I guy says
something like "I want to see Birthday Girl because it stars Nicole
Kidman and she wears slutty clothing in it"

I don't think we live in a world anymore where guys are the only ones
who openly talk about physical attractiveness and sex openly. Women
talk about it as well. At least they do in front of me.

The nude Rei and Maya models are based on artwork from the 2001 'Women
of Eva' calendar (also seen in the 'Stripping Instrumentality Project'
game). The scans should still be archived on shoujoai.com's hentai
forum, if you're interested in seeing them - Ritsuko looks especially
beautiful in those pics...

I know. I think the problem here is that I look at EVA in terms of
story and characters, before I think of it images and real-world
interests, which sometimes lets me run into snags. I'm not saying that
it's surprising/abominable that there's EVA fanservice merchandise out
there, just that I disagree with how it depicts the characters.

Damn straight, another victory for Ethan and his heralds.

Not exactly; algebraic terms are not the only usage. One might conceive
of a hypothetical computer language which indeed used the ^ sign for
powers, and hence which would make the above syntax correct.

By your definition (Pen)^2 = PenPen. Officially, however, IIRC its name
is Pen-Pen. Therefore the simplest form is not (Pen)^2, but rather just
"0". Same for Nuku^2... oops, I mean 0.

Plus its not like we came up with the Nuku^2 thing. It was used by
official sources first.

*looks around* Huh? Did somebody just mispronounce my name?

To be accurate it would be (Nuku)^2, but when dealing with names I
think people can work out the implied brackets.

Why doesn't anyone write 2Nuku for Nuku+Nuku?

Because it wouldn't be pronounced correctly: "two-nuku" and "nuku and
nuku". But nobody would say "nuku squared".

WARNING! WARNING!

Do not under any circumstance attemt to have sexual intercourse with
any anime or manga character! By doing so you are risking brutal
papercuts that may become gangrenous, which would mean the excision of
your genitalia. I only know this from experience, but fortunately
13inches out of my original 17 inches could be saved. Although my
penis is now a lot smaller, i still strive to please women. Stop
looking at my penis. Stop it, STOP it, STOP IT!

BIZZARO?¿?¿
Does it make it better if I say I don't actually need the subtitles?
