It is interesting that you post this today, since had I remained in
the Navy, today is the day I would have been eligible to retire. I
went on active duty June 3, 1983. Today would have finished up 20
years.

Ah, those were the good ole days.

Do you regret it? The benefits could have been sweet.
I know a man who retired while still in his 30s or early 40s, and has
used the remaining years of his life to care for both his parents and
wife who had health problems (parents now passed away), and engages in
community activities on a regular basis.

Not really.

I was in a job with a 5/3 rotation. That means: five years of sea
duty, followed by three years of shore duty. That would work out to a
total of 14 years at sea and 6 on shore. Not that I minded being at
sea, I actually sorta liked it, but for something like that, the
benefits *ought* to be sweet.

Remember my post a few weeks ago about topless bronzed goddesses on
tiny Pacific islands? I could have gotten started tomorrow, instead of
having to wait another quarter century or so.

See Mike, you're going to have to wait another quarter century to
become active in community service...
