I recently heard the English dub of Eva, and one thing in particular
stood out...what the hell did they do to Asuka! I mean, shit....I'd
rather mute it and read subtitles than listen to that voice.

Well, as a fan that has only seen the English dub, is the how would you
rate the Spanish, French and Japanese voice actresses?

All of them should have had a German gal voicing Asuka.

Not familiar with the Spanish or French dubs, but the Japanese VA,
Yuka Miramura, who was, after all, the only "Asuka' actually cast and
directed by Anno, gives a stunning perfomance. Check her out, for
example, in the Complementation scenes in EoE; she absolutely nails
the contempt and loathing that Asuka has come to feel for Shinji,
whereas Tiffany Grant is both lame and grating (like all of the
English dub cast).

I can't think of any way to say this that won't be misread as spitting
on Anno's vision and status as EVA's creator but...

I have an almost uniform preference for the dub cast over the sub cast
(except for the newer voice actors in the Manga dubs that originally
weren't part of the ADV group; their voice are mostly cringe-worthy)
and don't really consider it possible to make any universal statement
about who is the One, True, Voice for a charcter.

In my case, I thought the dub voices mostly suited my impressions of
the characters better than the sub ones, and both casts were
well-acted...both qualties which are subjective, and thus no concrete
"Is it good or isn't it?" answer can be provided.

It's true Anno chose the sub voices, and thus they were part of his
"vision" for Evangelion, but I derived a wealth of emotional
investment and overall interest from the EVA dub, creating my own
personal "vision" of EVA (obviously, not in the same league as Anno's
but it wouldn't be a "better" personal vision if I preferred the sub)
which included the ADV cast. It's the dub cast's voices I immediately
refer to, when thinking about the characters.

I don't consider this wrong, because it's just my own way of going
about my EVA fandom. I do not intend to mock Anno's status as EVA's
creator, or whatever.

The dub VAs were not perfect; there's fluctuating name pronunciation,
Amanda Winn Lee's tendency to whistle her "S"'s, Kensuke's funny
southernish accent and I'm still undecided as to how well Sue Ulu did
Ritsuko's hysterics. Yet for the most part I prefer them.

Yeah, I did. I don't think that makes a difference, though, when I can
state reasons why I prefer the dub voices.

D'oh! :) Yeah, I like Asuka's dub voice. Sometimes it's a bit too
shrill, but nothing really grating.

Actually, it makes a huge difference. First impressions tend to have the
biggest effect, so it's not unusual that you would associate the english
dubbed voices with the eva characters.

My impression towards dubs is, if the story doesn't call for it, then it is
unnecessary and would only lower the entertainment value that I would get
from watching the anime or movie. For example, the setting of Evangelion is
in Japan, and they are Japanese people, except Asuka(but she IS speaking
Japanese), it would be VERY awkward for me to watch it in english, german,
spanish, or even chinese dubbing. I feel perfectly comfortable watching my
Record of Lodoss War OVA in english dub because it's Fantasy, my experience
with fantasy has been through D&D, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and the
Forgotten Realms novels. Especially with Rurouni Kenshin, if I had to watch
it in anything other than Japanese with English Subtitles, I would find it
very annoying to see Kenshin or any of the Japanese characters constantly
speak in a different language other than Japanese.

Imagine the show with the following dub voices :-)

- Cast of Beavis & Butthead/Daria
- The Simpsons
- Monty Python voices
- All Your Base (Cats/MC Hawking)

Well, the same could be said for the sub voices, yes? :) If it is the
case that the first format viewed is wholly responsible for our
preferences, it just adds another question to why subs. vs. dubs is
debated anyway (I think the whole issue is silly, but that's beside
the point).

Also, I saw Escaflowne dubbed first (not the Escafox version), and
then I watched the movie subbed, and decided I liked the sub voices
better. I also saw Yuugiou dubbed first, and then subbed, and ended up
with a mish-mash of preferences for sub and dub voices, for what it
counts (probably nothing).

That matchs my own experience, I saw the series and DaR in english dub but
1st saw EoE in fan sub. And in my heart Shingi will have AWAYS said " I'm so
fucked up." Not "I'm helpless".
My question is, is it that hard to get children or people who sound like
children to do dub work. After seeing EoE in fan sub it hit me how adult
everyone sounds in the dubs though on some leval the voice dub is what I
think of when rembering most things..

I don't think 'in my heart' but I prefer this line too, it's one of the only
dub lines I prefer.
It just seems to convey the situation in my mind.

Just to add my own view... :)

I'm not a lover of dubs by any means but I saw Eva dubbed first because,
at that time, that was all that was available.

Now I have it subbed and I must say that it is one of the *only* anime
where I jointly enjoy both the sub and dub.

I obviously enjoy the original cast but I have no quarrel with any of
the English casting. There are questions about some of the translations
in the English version but that's nothing to do with the dubs actors.

As for Tiffany Grant as Asuka, I will say one thing...
It's to do with the scene where Asuka first activates Unit-02 aboard the
aircraft carrier by speaking in her native German...

I feel that dub Asuka belted the German dialogue out brilliantly with a
lot of Asuka-arrogance behind those words.

The Japanese actress, to me atleast, sounded like she lacked a certain
'Ooomph!' in the performance of that particular scene.

That's all my humble opinion anyway so feel free to file it in the bin:)

Tiffany Grant-Greenwood, the English VA for Asuka, is fluent in German, and
even rewrote some of the German dialog for Asuka, including her phone-call
with her stepmother. Ms. Greenwood is also the only VA who cosplays a
character she performes, in that she regularly shows up at cons dressed as
Asuka, either in her plugsuit or her school uniform (she can do this because
she's ~5 foot tall, with reddish hair and blue eyes.)

Ah I see. I thought I recalled someone saying that she was fluent in
German.

I guess the Japanese actress probably wasn't...and I wouldn't fancy
trying to read German dialogue that's probably written in katakana! :D

Actually, I was curious after hearing this. You can find a few just by
going to Google Images (http://images.google.com/) and typing in
"tiffany grant" or "tiffany greenwood" without the quotes (though I

Maybe it's just me, but she looks better with contacts than with
glasses. I will even go so far as to provide a link to a pic of her in
the plugsuit without the glasses she has in the link you provided for
