Allo,
I just finished a trial with YahooBB and now would like to change to a
different provider based on that yahooBB is run by a bunch of
fuckwits.
Its a long story so I wont bore you with it.

Im after a fast connection , possibly fibre optic if anyone thinks its
worth it or not.
Something with English support (YahooBB doesnt have a single person in
their building who speak any English so they told my wife, There was
me thinking YahooBB out of all of the providers would def have some
English support).
Usernet would be nice but not high priority.
Basically the faster the better.
As I said I have had Yahoobb for a while so Im assuming all the
plumbing is in place.
Would it be fairly simple to get connected (ADSL) to another provider?
Does fibre optic have a large installation fee?

Thanks

www.gol.com has all of those and the best English support in the country, with
native English speakers speakers in every section, including support.
(disclaimer: I work in the network section of GOL) We are not the cheapest but
our network is one of the best, very good support and actively anti spam.

Yes, but you need a new modem. Yahoo BB modems are not compatible with other
networks. You can have ADSL up within a week or two.

It was 30,000 yen but there was a discount. Don't ask me I'm not in sales.

Probably best to try gol.com (good English support). Another option,
depending entirely on where you are, would be to see what your local
cable company if able to offer.

I've had my own nightmare experiences with YahooBB in the past. I
moved houses in the same dan-chi and did NOT change my phone number
but I made the mistake of politely informing them of the move. This
turned out to be a HUGE mistake as they went right ahead and cancelled
my account and told me I had to reapply. This was right before New
Year's holidays a few years ago and I ended up being off the net for
about 6 weeks until I could get my cable service installed.

YahooBB? NEVER again! They suck donkey balls and their service in any
language is laughable not to mention their policy of allowing customer
data to be stolen and distributed.

>Im after a fast connection , possibly fibre optic if anyone thinks its

I went with B-Flets fiber optic just as soon as NTT started their
no-fee construction campaign. I don't know if that is still continuing
but there was no way I was going to pay the 27,000 yen or so they
charged for construction prior to that.

>Something with English support (YahooBB doesnt have a single person in

With all due respect to the Global Online employees in this newsgroup
I signed up with Asahi-Net (http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/en/) and have
not had one single complaint. Not only do they have full English
service and support they are the cheapest provider I could find. I've
subscribed to GOL in the past as well (back in the IDSN days) and they
were also excellent.

>Usernet would be nice but not high priority.

No binary newsgroups with Asahi but for text-based groups like this
Asahi has servers. I use subscription servers based in the USA for
binaries anyway.

B-Flets is plenty fast for me.

Yahoo BB ADSL and B-Flets ADSL are totally different animals. If you
go with B-Flets you are going to require construction. You should
contact NTT and check it out.

I am certainly not offended. We are only one option of many. The truth is I also
have an Asahi account as a backup, so I have an alternate route into our network
if there is a problem. I tend to use Asahi as it's better to use their bandwidth
than ours (^.^)

But they do cut corners on the network, you only get what you pay for.

I am not with gol, I don't think you are in the area anyway. But I have a
question about what ISP do about anti-spam. That means what exactly active
anti-spam ?

The thing is a number of my e-mails(those from my cousin in particular) are
not transmitted, I receive a little note saying they have deleted the spam
or viruses.
Arigato, kedo...I never give my adress to spammers, only to people that
don't have viruses (they send from workplaces with top-notch unviruses like
banks, etc). I wonder if the ISP didn't settle a filter that blocks any
group mailing from gaikoku. Or they block anything from a certain country (I
think my cousin sends from Luxembourg) ? Or anything with a name of company
? Or anything from certain foreign ISPs?
That's not important as my cousin can send me her idiot jokes at another
adress, but I'd like to know.

I had the girl of my provider on the phone the other day, she is terribly
clueless, I don't even know why she called me and she couldn't tell
either....well she doesn't know what an e-mail is of course, that's why she
calls people. Japan would no longer be Japan without such absurdities.

What do they charge you a month for your B-Flets package?

Actually, if you use YahooBB like I do, having a gol.com account is the
best way to go, you use their Lite account for 500 yen/month.

Having rock solid e-mail is essential, and their spam controls are
really very good, even if Brett is too wussy to post in the open and
clear with his real e-mail address.

Seeing my e-mail address, you can probably figure out how long I've been
with gol.com.

There are many ways and I'm sure that Brett is not going to give away
all the secrets because that would let spammers figure out ways to
circumvent these controls.

Basically anti-spam ISPs block suspicious mails, depending on content or
source, such as using databases of known spammers or IP addresses, etc.

I think that earthlink.net is one of the best major U.S. national ISPs
that are fighting spam. Here's more info to get you started.

That is typical of Japanese ISPs. Go figure. I would love to meet an
active anti-spam Japanese network admin.

They run all mail through SpamAssassin, and each customer can pay extra
to block all mail that has a hit-total above a value that the customer
can set hirself. There's a further charge for stripping suspicious files
from mail.

My NTT charges are as itemized on this page:

http://tinyurl.com/35dl8

The one difference is I don't think I'm being charged the 200 yen
monthly internal wiring fee for some reason.

I pay Asahi-Net 1,400 yen monthly (B-Flets Family Course, M-Plan) for
my account so the FTTH is costing me a grand total of 6,600 yen/month.
For the bandwidth I think it's a bargain. That said I do hope NTT
keeps dropping the price.

I don't know how their "corner cutting" affects me personally. I did
take GOL for a test drive with the B-Flets when I was deciding on
which provider to go with and I actually did better on the majority of
broadband speed testers with the Asahi account. I have also not
experienced one unscheduled network outage yet in my time with them..

I do believe Global Online is the best choice in Japan for folks who
need 100% English support. Tech support and almost all services ARE
available in English from Asahi and they do send out all network info
mailings in Japanese with full English translations. But there are
some services that are still only available in Japanese. I don't think
that's the case with GOL. Everything is available in English (and
Japanese) there.

GOL's customer support from my experience is also excellent

Raj.

Well, it seems they give me all with no surcharge but they decide of the
criteria for me. I can't really complain as last year, when so many people
got viruses, I didn't get any problem.

It all depends on the schedule of the NTT construction crews for your
area. You need to call the local NTT office and ask them for an ETA.
It looks like the free construction campaign might still be in effect.
I can't really tell you from my own experiences since I signed up
about 3 months before NTT had the fiber lines out to my area at all.

>To GOL men: How long would I wait to get connected?

I can answer that one too: Once your B-Flets connection is online you
can get instant service through the GOL online signup. Asahi-Net makes
you wait until you receive their user information by registered
(snail) mail but it only takes about 2 or 3 days. Many of the other
big providers also offer instant online signup for B-Flets accounts.
All you need to do is set up the PPPoe with the account information
GOL (or any other provider) gives you. You could easily switch between
accounts from different providers as easy as hitting disconnect and
dial. The hardest part with the B-Flets is getting the construction.
Once that's done the rest is a piece of cake.

I don't ask for the secrets. I was just surprised they blocked messages so
easily, by prevention, before any problem occurs. If I knew roughly why
messages are bounced, I could tell it to the senders what they should avoid.
Well, I will go on telling people to send me the important mails by fax too,

"Basic" gives you 100/100 from your ONU to the NTT BRAS (Broadband
Remote Access Server). And costs 10,900/mo to NTT.

"New Family" gives you a fibre whose 100/100 bandwidth is potentially
shared with up to 3 other customers (this setup is invisible to you -
occurs between you and the NTT CO). Cost is 6,400/mo to NTT.

Given the burstiness of the profile of typical broadband use, most people
don't find the additional expense of Basic service worth the cost
difference. I myself know of only one other person who has residential
basic service, and that is because he got it when that was the only
option available and he doesn't want to go through the hassle of switching.

Of course, YMMV, and if your 3 neighbors all run winny/winmx/bittorrent
clients 24x7, you may notice a difference.

Yeah, we're old timers... ;-)

I'm thinking about changing to a different posting e-mail address,
something like fj...@validdomain.com to see how much spam it actually
generates by posting in the clear and open.

I'm sure the fact that this is fj is shielding us a bit.

A couple months back, I stupidly added my email sig to a newsgroup post in
this group - with phone numbers and emails. Luckily it was just before I
moved, and my local ISP was bought out by ODN, so the only info in the sig
that didn't change was my gol account.

However, I received very little spam on my gol after that.

Then a little while ago, I posted my email address in the clear on an alt
group. Literally within minutes, I got my first virus laden MS patch. Since
then I've gotten about 2-5 virus emails per day, and 5-10 spams. Not
unmanageable, but the speed of the response was surprising.

I unmunged for a total of three posts (an accident while I was

I contacted my NTT as instructed by GOL and to my dismay they told me
that YahooBB is still 'attached ' to my phone line.
They said I would need to get a disconnection date from yahooBB before
they can do anything.
Well I got my wife to call and they said I have to send back the modem
1st and then they would give me a date.
Why cant they just disconnect my line?
I feel trapped to them, and after having a lengthy chat to a very nice
GOL lady who told me that some yahoobb defectors have waited up to a
month to be disconnected.

Is there anyway I can get this sorted out sooner? Legal threats? dog
shit pies?

Im now thinking it would be easier to just re-sign with this band of

any comments/strategies would be extremely helpful.

I decided to dump YahooBB's 26M service also stating problems with normal
phone connections. People said they would try to call letting it ring for a
long time and we were at home however the phone never rang on our end.
Sometimes we would call someone and they couldn't hear us. My wife talked
to them and Yahoo said we had to fill out a cancellation card, which we just
mailed off yesterday. Hopefully they will disconnect without needing to
receive the modem back right away. They haven't stated that at all.
