Is it a router, or the modem?

That is, there is just a phone jack and LAN port marked "PC"?

This might help people answer you.

OK, I've got mine plugged into a Buffalo router (which has a *brilliantly*
translated UI and manual, I might add), which takes care of all that stuff.

However, I once tried plugging straight into the modem to see if I got
better connection speed (I didn't), and if I recall everything just went
through kind of like magic. Are you on XP?

But this is probably a dead end. If you are getting onto the Interweb
thingy, but just can't log onto your email server, I would suspect that your
account settings are wonky, and it doesn't have anything to do with your
modem (router). I see you're on OE -- just mail me your login, password, CC
#, mailing address, and mother's maiden name, and I'll see if I can get you
sorted out.

I use Direct Connect (p2p) and I can only get files in pasive mode, so
someone suggested I need to 'forward the ports' hence the big thing about

If it's just a modem (which it appears to be) then set the ports in
the properties tab of your network connection (in the control panel
thingy).

How many computers do you connect to it? AFAIK ADSL modems with router have
more than one ethernet jack. If it has only one ethernet port or a single
USB port in addition to a regular phone jack, than it is ADSL modem.

Actually, you're wrong. It is a modem/router.
It has router/firewall functionality built into it as well as being an
ADSL modem.

To the OP, I don't think there's any way you can configure it in English
- the configuration web page you see is in the firmware, which as far as
I know NEC only do in Japanese.

I can't think of any reason the router config would prevent you
accessing email, though. The default configuration should allow email
connections.
Try creating a new profile in whatever email software you are using, and
re enter your email account and server details, and see if that works.

There's only one place to connect it to a PC. What the hell is it
routing and to where?

Internet traffic, to and from the Internet. Seems pretty plain to me..
Just having a single network port doesn't disqualify it from being a
router. If you were to connect it to a hub or switching hub, it would
quite happily route for a number of PCs.
The majority of those 'broadband routers' you see on the market with
multiple network ports for PCs are more or less the same thing, just
with the switching hub part built in.

Finally a question I can answer. Most routers only have a single ethernet port
per network (including the Cisco 2600 next to me), in this case 2. You need a
switch to hang multiple computers off a router.

Did I miss the part that of this thread that actually stated how - if at
all - the lack of English language menus was effecting the performance of
the router. If there's something specific you want to do - such as opening
up some ports for ftp, remote connection, web serving or online gaming then
I'm sure we can probably sort you out.

Okay.....lemme take a stab at this. First, you have a router (I have
a similar one from NTT). If you don't have a LAN card, then you'll
need one. Don't go for a Japanese model....they confused the heck out
of me. A few years ago, I got a 3Com LAN card and it worked fine.
Today, my ABIT motherboard has a built-in LAN so I don't need a card
anymore. When you got the router, you should have gotten a splitter.
The splitter has three connectors: one from the main telephone line,
the second for connecting to your telephone, and the third for
connecting to the router. You then use a LAN cable to connect the
router to the LAN card. BTW...when you install the LAN card, you have
to install the driver to make it work. (Which is one reason why I
picked the 3Com card....the installation was in English....so no
confusion.)

Good luck with your set up.

Seems to me that he does not or cannot log in to the ISP. My ISP
(Biglobe) also requires authentification for web and email access, but
does not for usenet. I have always wondered why...

there's a version of the UI in speakadaenglish, or was that only the
Sepponian export version of the router?

Don't know if you have to buy the "English" version of the router to get the
English UI, or if you can zap your Japanese one. The manual should be
available for download somewheres.

I think you'll find that you're stuck with the Japanese User Interface - I
tried using a English firmware upgrade on my Buffalo router two years ago
but it wouldn't accept it - and I concluded that it probably wasn't the
smartest thing to try to do anyway. If you have the English language manual
(thanks to Ryan's efforts - Did they give you the router for free?) it's
probably a simple question of: "that's the third menu item down so it must
be want I want".

That's what I do with my Japanese Linksys router. The Linksys homepage is
kind enough to have screenshots for just about every and any configuration
you could imagine. Plus of course there are the dozens of English help
forums where Linksys is the 'preferred' model.

It looks like you have the same sort of NTT routermodemthingy that I
do, and I didn't do a damned thing to mine in order to open ports.

You need to do this instead, most likely, on your internet connection
in your control panel in Windows. (Assuming you're using Windows, of
course).

Ha! These are clients who pay a million-yen invoice, then deduct the 500 yen
or so for the wire transfer.

I actually hadn't realized that I had translated this particular model until
the thing arrived, and I saw those red, blue and green circles on the front
page of the manual.

The only time I was a bit disappointed about not getting a copy of what I
was translating was when I was doing some translation for the Aibo, and
failed to convince them that I could do the job a lot better with a freebie
prototype.

Moot point, but that is not legal. When you pay a bill you can't charge the
person for your costs of paying it.
