I've heard it quoted that MAcarthur said "the japanese should be
treated like they're 12 year old".

This may be a paraphrase of his speech, in which compared to the
"modern germany" japan was a "12 year old boy".

However, it is clear that Macarthur somehow though of japanese as
being immature, and probably not solely to them not being modern or
even and enemy because i do not believe he made similar remarks about
Koreans or Chinese. Or his duties as an administrator, for I do not
believe he made similar remarks about the people of the Phillipines.

I just want to know your opinions on why you think this, both japanese
and otherwise.

This is one of those topics that pops up from time to time. You can find
some discussion of it (along with quotations) here:

Don't mistake this remark. My personal opinion is that the remark if maded
referred to Japan's lack of a Constitutional Democracy and culture of
Emperor Divinity. It is a judgement through "Western Cultural Bias".

A prudent person would not assume that this applies to the Japanese in
general unless you are a troll. No offense intended.

Part of the reason why i think macarthur meant this argument to apply
specifically to the japanese is he did not make similar remarks about
the philipines, which was not even as modern as japan. Nor even for
his other enemies.

Cultural bias? Probably. But I still feel there is a strong
implication that Macarthur felt the japanese immature, and not just
for reasons of modernization.

In fact, in this respect he should consider the japanese quite mature,
considering they kicked his ass in Luzon twice.

mccarthur, when he returned to the US, gave an account of what he did
in japan to the congressional committee.
mccarthur compared the japanese with the germans. he said japanese
were less guilty than the germans because whereas germans belonged to
a mature and advanced culture and should have known better, japan
during the military era had been like a 'boy of thirteen'.

it was a condescending but was said to explain the rise of japanese
militarism, not to insult the japanese. japanese did feel insulted
however.

My dad served in the Pacific (USMC) in WWII. He told me he decided to join
the Marines rather than the Army because he didn't want to fight the
Germans.

He said that he HATED the Germans and didn't hate the Japanese. IOW: he
considered the Germans and individually responsible for the war but not the
Japanese.

That's a use of simile. It shows MacArthur's "Eurocentric"
perception of the political maturity of Japan.

Japan was pretty much purely feudal ( in the Japanese variations of
that ) up to the 1800ish time frame. MacArthur being a 19th century
balance of power man, that looks like a 12th century system. I
wouldn't be at all surprised if that was not the math exactly.

Of course, Japan had made a different sort of art out of feudalism,
and his remark probably also referred to the sort of naeivete
associated with Bushido. There was a lock of culture shock
associated with Bushido - Murkins/Europeans hadn't encountered
much of that sort of thing before.

In fairness, not nearly as much was known of Japan by Westerners,
then.

It's a stupid thing for a statesman to say in quotable form, because

I personally wouldn't believe Macrthur to be a pure eurocentric; after
all if it were up to him the pacific would get more american
resources.

Well there are really a million analogies to choose from to describe a
nation domianted by militarists. APathetic, barbaric, less advanced,
unlucky, whatever. He knew what he ws saying, as he had time to

And he struggled with that a great deal. All of Bataan was about

Yet all those were used by various people to describe the Japanese.

Do you think any of those are accurate? Propaganda has a proper and
legitimate place at the table during wartime. Did that context
affect his statements at all?

> He knew what he ws saying, as he had time to
> prepare.

I think no American had a very accurate view of any Oriental people
at the time. The Hearst newspapsers had spread enough Yellow Peril
propaganda that anything was possible.

I mean, face it - the world was colliding together rapidly, and the
great recourse was the narcissism of small differences.

People. Were. Much. More. Naif. Then. Than. Now.

And you therefore accuse him of what, racism? Of course he was a racist.

He was born in the 19th century. Racism was then what General Relativity
is now. Racism took Dachau and Auschwitz to die. People are not very
smart sometimes; it often takes a Big Pile of Bodies for stupid things
to
pass by.

Despite that, a regime has more or less stood whole in Japan since the
Emperor's reign, and I am for one glad he was able to do what he was
able to do. I presume that the United States extended its hand to the
fallen Japanese, and a workable system was developed. That is no
small miracle. And it is amazing that people do not see the resonances
with that and what we see today.

He did what he did, and for the reasons he did them. I would not
surgarcoat nor paint any of it with a broad brush; as were most
leading figures of that era, MacArthur was a complicated and rich
character and I think the historical record finds him a Good Guy in
spite of himself.

No worry, the Japanese are/were laughing at MacArthur, who showed his
personal "slave-blood attitude" hating the feudal world. I mean those
"mac" people really hate that feudal imperilalism, especially those of
Britain.

Funny thing is, MacArthur despised Japanese as "12 year-old" and he
praised Germans, who are the Irish's friends, but he was surely one of
those slave-blood "mac" people who couldn't resist their master of
English, means the King of England. MacArthur hesitated to execute the
emperor Hirohito just because Hirohito was like one of his masters in
England. He respected Hirohito, as well as his "mac" people had been
trained to respect English for many centuries.
