Hi guys,

Right now I'm re-running the entire serie in anticipation of the
Director Cut DVD's which will be heading my way and I'm wondering about
2 things, and they both concern Asuka in some way ;)

First of all I wonder if the English voice actors have all sticked to
the script or also gave their own little twist to the things the
characters said. The reason I'm wondering is that the serie wasn't
mainstream when it was first aired (as far as I know) yet some of the
actors are damned good with putting some emotion into their voices.

Some outstanding scenes (IMO) are when Asuka makes a final all out
attack Zeruel (in the Geofront), when Ikari yells that the dummyplug is
still better than Shinji, when Akagi yells after Asuka when she refuses
to take a backup position for Rei, etc, etc.

I wonder if that was all planned or just a lucky outcome considering the
change of speech in Death/Rebirth.... Especially Asuka's voice is
really matching the person I think; cold, bitchy and sometimes utterly
annoying.

And speaking of Asuka... In the intro movie there is a quick glimpse of
Asuka being topless (she covers her chest with her arms). Its in the end
of the intro, right after the scene of the 'class rep' (forgot her name)
and Ikari looking down.. So far I managed to find all scenes of the
intro in the serie itself except for this one. Its not that I'm anxious
to see Asuka naked, not hard to do with the Internet anyway, but I do
wonder where this scene was placed in the series (if it was placed at
all, I think not but I guess I could overlook it).

Well, I do know that the English VA for Asuka, Tiffany Grant-Greenwood
(she got married to an Evangelion producer last year!) fluently speaks
German, and rewrote much of Asuka's German dialogue from the original
(grammatically incorrect) script. She's also incredibly enthusiastic
about the show and often cosplays as Asuka at conventions -- there's a
video of this somewhere on the ADV site. Oh, and she reprised her role
for Evangelion:R, the most successful Evangelion fanfic.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen most of the series in English, so I can't
comment one way or the other on how good they are.

I doubt there's ANY ad-libbing, as dubbing scripts are done very precisely
to match mouth movement. Oddly enough, quality actors exist who can do
awesome work with a script even when a show isn't mainstream. I'm not sure
why you think a non-mainstream show would require ad-libbing to have quality
work from its actors. >_>

There tends to be some ad-libbing in pretty much any vocal work, whether
it's radio, television or dubbing anime. At times, the scripts would be
deliberately unspecific (i.e. "Next 20 seconds: crying", Or "Asuka walks
away, complaining, the word 'Idiot' can be heard"). Of course, the
actors still have to stick to the mouth movements. Perhaps this is why
dialog seems more natural when the face of the character talking is off
screen.

And the snapshot in the intro sequence? I don't think all of the intro
"flashes" are taken from the series. Many of them look more to be
concept sketches than anything else.

Umm... That's Misato holding her hands over her breasts. That image
only occurs in the opening; it's not a shot from the series
