Anyway, what do you make of the scene where Rei 1 taunts Dr. Akagi? Was she
setting Dr Akagi up as a way to get rid of her? The taunts of "old hag"
certainly seem out of character for Rei - and the look on her face was kind
of creepy (more so than usual). I dont think it was an act of childishness,
it all seemed very deliberate by Rei 1. My own interpretation was Yui was
speaking through Rei, trying to get back at her rival for Gendo.
I have also heard others say that Gendo set it up as a way to get rid of Dr.
Akagi, though I dont think he would put Rei through that (even though Rei
could be "replaced", it had never been done before and had to be a risk).
Your thoughts?

I have always thought of it in terms of the Gendo set-up theory, mostly
because, you're right, it seems incredibly out of character for Rei.
On the other hand, it does seem in character for Rei to tell the truth
without regard for its human implications, which explains why she would
relay something like this. It's also quite possible and in fact more
likely that Gendo didn't mean to intentionally eliminate Naoko, but had
only been talking loosely around Rei.
One wonders what Rei 2 and 3 remember of the whole thing.
Also, is it ever clarified in the series whether Ritsuko knows about Rei
1 and how her mother died?

It's hard to determine what Ritsuko knows, but I doubt she knew the truth
(she would have brought it up at some point) - early in the series it seems
that she doesnt know much of the truth about Rei - when she asks Shinji to
bring Rei her pass she says things like "she's a nice girl" but
inexperienced... and at another time she says how the data about Rei's past
has been erased. Later in the series though she seems to be much more on the
inside of the conspiracies.
Maybe what drove Ritsuko over the edge was learning the truth about Rei's
past and her mom's or (more likely) the producers changed her character
later in the series.
Then again, Ritsukyo is such a liar and such a cold-blooded user of people.
Then again, again....
lol

I think Ristuko's acting towards the end of the series was due to the fact
that she was closely tied in with project eva, keep in mind the implications
and responsibilities of her position in NERV.
Her relationship with an almost emotionless person couldn't've helped much
either.
