Does anyone know where I can get a picture of Rei Ayanami nailed to the
cross, wearing a crown on thorns and impaled in the side with a lance?

No, it's not for sick hentai purposes - rather, I'm fascinated by the
Ayanami/Christ analogy that is hinted at throughout the series and I would
love to see a depiction of Rei as Jesus. I'm sure I saw some artwork like
that a long time ago, b4 I was into Eva, and I didn't save it.

Ah, but that would require playing with Photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro, or
The GIMP, or some other image manipulation program...

Nope - Sailor Uranus says in at least two different episodes that Sailor
Moon wasn't the Messiah.

(One could make a decent case for Sailor Saturn being the Anti-Christ,
though...)

Hm. Most of the allegorical art I've seen featuring Rei
depict her more as an angel than a Christ like figure...

Can't help you find it, I'm afraid. I don't recall ever having
seen this one.

However, if this is something you would REALLY like to have,
you could always find an artist whose work you like (or who
is very good at mimicing the style of NGE's animators) and
commission him to draw you the picture you want. According
to your specifications, even.

Surely it's Shinji who's the JC figure - there's even an "empty tomb"
scene with Misato as Mary Magdalene (and note that he's wearing school
uniform when he goes in, but a plug suit when he comes out). Oh and he
has an ascension at the end, complete with angels bearing him up into
the heavens. Rei is presumably the BVM (or at least some kind of
avatar of Yui).

Shinji (inside Unit-01) is literally crucified in EoE, the Lance of
Longinus driven into his side - he also develops stigmata. The imagery
is not exactly subtle, though it could be argued that it is *Yui* who
is actually being crucified and that Shinji is a passive observer...

Rei can also be interpreted as a Christ-figure - in that she also has
an 'empty tomb' scene (with Ritsuko as the Mary Magdalene figure),
followed by her 'resurrection' - then, once combined with Yui and
Lilith, we have Daughter, Mother and Holy Spirit united into one
Godhead - a Holy Trinity of sorts (equally, Shinji is there too, so it
could be interpreted either way - but it seems to me that Shinji has
been brought before the Goddess by Her will so that She may give him
the choice as to the fate of humanity).

Interestingly, At both the beginning of episode 1 and at the very end
of EoE, an unexplained vision of Rei briefly appears before Shinji.
She is the first thing he sees, she is the last thing he sees - she is
the beginning of the series, she is the ending of the series - Ayanami
is the Alpha and the Omega...

I have seen an image of Rei *chained*, mostly naked to the cross. I'm
not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for though.

There is also *this* pic, which appears to show Rei wearing a crown of
thorns whilst Shinji, Asuka and Misato look on reverently (though
granted, I may have got it completely wrong and misinterpreted some
obscure Japanese cultural reference...)

No, it's just a common exclamation when people see her.

Hm...looks more like a wreath of poinsetta leaves to me. Or maybe
laurel. But I'm not a botanist, so I wouldn't know.

I think it's basically just the corresponding "congratulations" scene
for Rei.

Hmmm. It was working this afternoon - maybe shoujoai.com has installed
an anti-leech script now...

Anyway it's a good thing I have it saved ^_~ (cut and paste it, just
to make sure it works) -

Yeah, you might be onto something there. Anyone have any ideas as to
the significance of the wreath?

I believe the laurel wreath is an ancient Greek symbol of victory,
heroism, etc, etc. That's what they gave to Olympic atheletes, for
example.

I also believe that such wreaths on a woman's head are part of coming of
age ceremonies in certain cultures.

Just visit this 404 page, go to the address bar of your browser and hit
enter again - that should fix the Referrer:-header that the server
doesn't like the first time.
