Anyway, trip home with mr. sumo jnr. was about 1000% better that outward.
He actually slept for about 6 of the 11 hours from Frankfurt - and at times
when his mother and I could eat (always the highlight when in business
class!). Of course the journey home wound not have been a 'sumo' family
trip without some problems. This time it was Lufthansa in London not having
the upgrade details on their computer screens. Once this was sorted of
course I completely failed to notice that the young girl at the check-in
counter had assigned my wife and I seats 4 rows apart! Not to worry - the
flight attendants put us together on board to Frankfurt and at Frankfurt
they sorted out the upgrades - we in fact ended up with the entire first row
in business class. My wife spread out in the left aisle, 'junior' asleep in
the baby-bed in the center whilst I crashed out in the right. Three people,
6 seats, and cabin crew who just told us to sit wherever we liked - and this
included in the galley where we took 'junior' when he needed to exercise his
lungs!
I'm thinking of giving Europe a miss for the next couple of years, then
again, unless I can get a machine-readable passport from the UK Embassy
(they assure me that the equipment will be installed by November), then it
looks like I won't be going to the USA either. I can just about accept the
machine-readable passport demands, but to have to apply for a tourist visa
in person seems a little overkill.

What's the in-flight entertainment like on Lufthansa these days? Do they
have seat-back video screens?
I am a fan of Virgin, since their planes to the UK have seats arranged
2+4+2, which greatly reduces the chances of having to spend 12 hours sitting
next to someone you don't know. Never having flown in anything other Economy
class, I can't comment on how their Business class compares.

I don't recall Lufthansa having seat-back video screens. Of course in
business class you get the pop-up video screens. Three simple reasons I
always fly Lufthansa: they fly from Nagoya which is an hour down the
expressway; they're Star Alliance which means I can always use my United
airmiles to upgrade; I can buy the tickets direct from Lufthansa, paying
using my United credit card so I get miles on miles.
Of course everything is going to change in a couple of years when 'Centrair'
http://tinyurl.com/mtva opens. Maybe we'll finally get some direct UK
flights back at Nagoya (sorry - 35kms south of Nagoya)....at least for the
opening couple of years!

You are about 35 km souyth of Nagoya? That pretty much describes me to a

I hate having to put on a show of being mean, but it seems the only way
to avoid people being mean to you these days is to be mean yourself.
NO! That's where the new airport is being built. I just didn't want to say
that the new airport was going to be in Nagoya - there are a few in the ng.
who would have felt the need to correct my mistake!

Damn, that means they are probably gonna bulldoze my house to make room
:(

There is more than one Hamamatsu too. And I think Asahi is the
Springfield of Japan.
I'd have to say you probably gonna be safe - that is unless you live in
accommodation that has the worst case of rising damp in the last 100 years.
The airport is being built off-shore - then again they might bulldoze your
house in order to access the damn thing - though I think not if they haven't
already. Surely the construction of a new airport can't have occurred
unnoticed?

I suppose it could be. But I never actually lived near a Marunouichi.

I know of at least three off the top of my head in Gifu Pref. alone, and there's
an area of Nagoya that's called such. Must be one of those all-purpose names,
like the American propensity to name streets after trees. Elm, Chestnut,
Maple...

It can when he lives on the other side of Ise Bay from the new airport site.
Kawagoe is just past Kuwana, in Mie Prefecture.
