I have just ordered the Nikon Coolpix 5700. I would like some input as to
comparisons with other cameras in the same class, or is there any camera in
the same class as the Nikon Coolpix 5700?

whats the point as you have already placed your order! in my view, Olympus
c750 blows it out of the water.

In what way? If it really is that good over the Coolpix, I can always
return the camera I ordered and get the Olympus. Please tell me why the
Olympus is so much better so that I can intelligently compare both cameras
and make the proper choice.

Well, I just couldn't get the auto focus on the Nikon to do its stuff when I
gave it a test at the store, so switched me right off that. The Olympus has
no such problems, and the images are very sharp with 4 million effective
pixels. The optic zoom of 10x is a class leader and again gives a very sharp
image. Add to that capacity to take a series of panoramic shots etc etc and
I think its an excellent camera.

I see your point Gary, but I think if you closely compare the two cameras
feature for feature, you will find that the 5700 has as much or more goodies
than the Olympus, as well as a million more pixels. True, it doesn't have a
10X Zoom, but for most people's zooming requirements, an 8X optical zoom
will more than suffice. As far as your problem with the auto focus, can you
imagine how many people, ignorant of how to treat a fine mechanism, have
probably mishandled that camera before you picked it up? I guess the only
way to get an unbiased evaluation would be to talk to someone who had
extensively used both cameras, so if anyone out there has experience with
both cameras, please give us your input.

Yes, 8x optical zoom will be plenty for most, and those same people would
not need all the other features the Nikon has. Generally people use perhaps
20/30% of the gadgets available, so best to have a camera that can be
operated on a relatively simplistic basis - this goes again down the Olympus
path.

For AF the 5700 handels a little better than the Olympus. They
probably had the AF settings messed up when they handed you the
camera. The 5700 has a Contrast-detect TTL 7,123-step autofocus
control (including macro range) 5-area Multi AF or Spot AF selectable
all in continous, single, or manual. They probably handed it you in
Spot mode / Manual or turned off all together if you couldn't get
it to proform.

For "sharpness" the 5700 is 5.24 million pixels not 4 like the Oly.

Also the 5700 sports a 70-millisecond shutter release lag time!
Awesome specs for these days.

Any camera buff who knows both systems will always reccomend
the 5700 over the C-750UZ when quality and handeling are the
issues and not price. Well, unless you absolutely need the
smaller body size.

About the only thing the Oly has over the Nik is the top end
of the zoom lens assembly.

5700: Nikkor 8x zoom (35-280mm in 35mm equivalent) with ED glass
C750: 10x zoom (38-380mm equivalent) with ED Glass

But the 5700 lens is a little better design and brighter overall.
You /will/ need a trypod to use anything over about 180mm with
that slow 1/1000 shutter. The Nikon is 1/4000 so often usable
in-hand to the full range of available zoom.

The 5700 and the C750 are both very good cameras made by very
nice companies. If I was on a budget it would be a hard choise
indeed! Especially if I didn't need the 5MP of the 5700. OTOH,
If I had the extra $250 the overall _much_ faster responce and
handeling, faster shutter, and the higher resolutions make the
5700 the clear choise. -- Hands down.

Yup, the Nikkon too...

They both are. I think it breaks down to budget here given
only these two as possible options. All that said, I think I
like my new 5050 as much or more than my 5700...

O :-P

I feel good - lot good - after seeing these comments. I have a Sony
cybershot and
I wanted to graduate to SLR and relied solely on the reviews and posts here
to decide on Nikon 5700.

I placed a mail order and expect it to arrive in couple of days.

But the Nikon 5700 is *NOT* an SLR type camera.
You know that right?

I should have said something like "I wanted to graduate from a point and
shoot cybershot to one where I have some options for light, speed, focus
etc.

By the way what is the definition of Single Lens Reflex camera?

See if you can follow this:

Human Eye
/
/
/ /
b /-----------> <o>
/^
|
|
| . c
|/ |
------------>/ a |
LENS / | Film Plane
|

Two mirror reflex points marked "a" and "b".

One mirror hinge point marked "c". Usually
in most SLR type cameras the "a" mirror is in
the down position (as shown) to send the "image"
to the human eye and in the up position (swung
upward about 45 degrees from shown position on
hinge point "c") when exposing the film or in
the digicam case saturating the CCD (or CMOS)
imager chip shortly after the "shutter release"
button is depressed.

So it's one lens which the human eye sees through
via "some number" of reflexes: SLR

Basically that's it. I hope you could follow that... I'm really drunk
right now so I may wake up thinking... Oh No...!

O :-)

The advantage is: You see exactly what the lens sees... Cuz you're
looking through it... :D With digital cameras it's also come to
be associated with features such as detatchable lenses, has Hot Shoe,
mechanical shutter, in-lens leaved aperture-blades, and a host of
other "professional" or 35mm SLR like features.

--
BTW, if your news reader isn't already set to use a "fixed width" font
then you should definatly set it so. I use "Lucida Console". News and
mail should IMO, be non-proportional, "fixed-width". ;)

Damn, I'm sooooo opinionated! Hehehe...

Glad to read the responses to my plea. I should be getting my 5700 about a
day or two after the holiday. When I learn how to use it properly, I will
report my impressions.
