ADSL and Windows 98
mr.sumo snr.
Unfortunately she's using a fairly old Toshiba notebook operating English
Windows 98 (don't know if it's first or second edition). Her line is
changed, she has the modem, I have the network card, and the OCN account is
set-up.
Anyone have the low down on configuring Windoze 98 to use? I'm sure it's
very simply...lol...but is there anything to look out for - and/or where's
best to download the pppoe software.
Apologies - I haven't Googled these questions since I'm after a quick fix
answer from someone who's already done this.

If she's running FLETS it might be a bit tricky, as I'm not sure how
good the NTT-supplied PPPoE software is with Win98, especially if it's
English Win98. If it's a proper account, Win98 should autodetect
everything, and just set DCHP for the network adapter. After a number
of reboots, it should all be up and running, in theory.

When I switched to ADSL I was still running Win98SE(J). The nice lady
at NTT asked me what system I was using. They sent me a disc to use
and installation was easier than falling off a log. Easier in fact,
than it was for me to figure out how to set up a new connection on XP.
Even easier than when I did XP again on the new computer a couple days
ago and spent half an hour cussing the entire planet because I
couldn't recall how to go about it.
Figuring out the configuration will be the easy part.
The hard part will be getting used to resetting the fucking modem
every five fucking minutes because fucking Windows 98 just don't
fucking like high speed access.

I would suggest having the Windoze 98/SE (or whatever) CD handy. After
the installation of the network card, Windoze would most likely look for
various things from the CD. Seeing it's a notebook, it's probably on
the hard disk though.
As for the PPPoe software, doesn't the modem/router handle that part,
no?

Haven't done it exactly, but...
Windows 98 doesn't natively support PPPOE, but the adsl folks will provide
you with pppoe software. Unfortunately, this will be in Japanese and be
illegible in english win98. However, you can download free pppoe client
software - although it won't be supported (naturally) by your JET's adsl
folks. Among free offerings, the most common seems to be www.raspppoe.com.
If she's using a router which supports pppoe, then she might not need it.

Thanks people - I think she has a supplied disc - now I'll have to try and
dig out Windows 98 - I think I have it somewhere 'coz she's sure she doesn't
have her own install disc. Now where is that second edition version....?

I swear to god, if you just browse the damn CD supplied from NTT there will
be an English version of that DUN hook-up software.
the easiest way to deal with ADSL FLETS is just to put a router between the
computer, and adapter, then it is a no brainer, and it adds an extra layer
of protection.

Thanks - found it - Win98 SE that is - or to be precise, found it courtesy
of Supernova.
Anyway, read up on what I need to do. Looks fairly straightforward - but if
all else fails I'm also taking one of my spare WinXP notebooks and she can
use that until I get back from Blighty.

Thanks again for all the useful advice. Succeeded in getting the Win98
notebook up, running and connected - albeit for just a few minutes...once
she'd tried out my XP notebook - well, needless to say you can figure the
rest out yourselves, which is why I'm still up at 3.43 am finishing off
Service Pack 1!
