Card not initilized, I lost all my pics?!?!

Model: S602Zoom
I am using 2 cards in this camera, a Compact Flash and a Smart Media card.
I had filled up my Smart Media card and had switched over to my CF card. I
took a bunch of pictures... then suddenly after about 30 pics it came up
with 'card not initilized' and I can not access the card at all. It keeps
asking if i want to format the card.
Are there any recovery options i can try at home without spending out money.
Even when the Camera is connected up to my computer under DSC mode so that i
can try to access the card as a normal Drive from 'My Computer'???

Had the same with mine when also using both card slots.

I switched to the problematic card, then removed both cards and left the
camera off for about an hour.
I put the problem card back in on it's own and all my pics reappeared.

Not sure if there's generally a problem switching between cards. I've only
needed to do it once so far, so it's 100% failure already!

If the above doesn't work, try and borrow a card reader, or pop down to a
processing shop to see if they can access it.
