and I can't think of any other reason for them to bring it up, and if
so, it doesn't seem like very good timing to me to make that sort of
statement.

I haven't heard anything in the TV reports. While the identity of the boy
has not been and will not be made public, I suspect the media would have
been quick to start hinting at any "non-Japanese" slant on the story if
there had been one.

I have heard that there are crimes committed by Brazilian lads sharply
increasing in number in Aichi Prefecture. But the crimes should be
generally minor. Although I don't think that it is okay to ignore
minor crimes, it would not be appropriate to discuss such offenses
commited by young 'foreigners' shortly after the serious one by the 12
year old boy. In a sense its timing is bad. The Minster may have
given something of implication to the Brazilian community in Japan, I
suppose.

To paraphrase, sure this is a shocking crime committed by one of our own,
but let us not forget the fact that the foreigners are the main source of
crime in Japan. Let's make sure this incident doesn't cloud this well known
fact.
Look on the bright side: at least he didn't say, "If only the victim was a
Brazilian, then we could have ignored it."

Perfectly typical timing. The important thing is not to address any
actual or perceived problem and to deal with it in any rational and
effective way. The important thing is to point out "I'm okay, you're
okay. It's these damned foreigners that are the problem."
Really, I don't know what they'd do without us to blame all their
problems on.

>I saw this in the paper:
My wife informs me that the 12yo's name, home address, school, etc
have already been made quite public on the internet. And he apparently
is not Brazilian, but Japanese.

A junior high school teacher in Fukushima is reportedly in trouble for using
the boy's photo he downloaded from the Internet to discuss the issue of
human rights abuse. Sigh...

Must be on the "2ch net".
I see - that's just the info I was hoping someone would have - BTW, do
any of the Japanese journalists ever stop to ask politicians things
like "Why the hell bring up gaigins when this case is nothing to do
with them?"
Also, I am surprised to see that the
Former-Gaigin-Formerly-Known-as-Dave's mailing list had nothing on
this, but I suppose as it doesn't involve any "proper" gaigins, it's
of no interest to them.
