Steadman just gives katakana, and my wife's doctor doesn't know that
term. Could it be おなかの張り? This term seems to be used quite
frequently (but the advice for 張り is the opposite to Braxton Hicks.)
Thanks for your help.
James Kilfiger.
前駆陣痛 (zenku jintsuu) perhaps?

A quick Google turned up the following medical terminology page, which
suggests 妊娠陣痛.

Different thing, I believe. Admittedly, I had to first google around
and find out what the hell a Braxton-Hicks contraction is. Then I had
to describe it to my wife and ask her to come up with a term for it.
According to Google, some pages say "前陣痛" and others say "前駆陣痛."
It seems a false labor pains which comes before the true labor pains.

And in the process, you have once again confirmed that the difference between
Man and Woman is far greater than any division of mankind by culture, language,
religion, etc.

I think it has far more to do with the Pepsi Generation using a term
like "Braxton-Hicks contraction" instead of the good old fashioned
"false labor pain" (though I have experienced neither, of course).
Anyway, the difference may not be as great as some of us may suppose;
I once met a woman who claims she can write her name in the snow.

Sure is.

I'd forgotten all about them. My wife used to specialize in them. It was
hard to tell when the Real Thing began.
