A thought on how the ending is:

Shinji has just allowed the world to reform the boundaries between human
souls thus recreating the world of pain and love that he so desperately
wanted to run away from in the beginning. He turns and see Rei as a
'spirit' (for lack of a better word) and then disappear. He then sees his
not-so-beloved Asuka laying next to him.

(following is the conjecture - don't flame me)
Shinji thought that the other people would reform around him as their wills
would do (just rise out of the ocean like Venus). Nope, their bodies can
only reform the "old-fashioned" way. Shinji now realizes that he is the
biblical Adam to Asuka's Eve (or Lilith?). To him that's too much so he
decides to take all this out on Asuka (not actually wanting to kill her -
it's the only way he can react in a violent fashion). Asuka, in a rare show
of clarity tries to comfort Shinji by placing her hand on his cheek. This
does the trick.

With his hands now off her and she too realizing the situation states the
last line (which really could be seen as either "I feel sick" or "I feel
disgusted").

Anyway that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

A pretty nice attempt

The thing about Eva I really like is that almost everyone draws their own
conclusions from it - and are entitle to. :)

The best analasys I've heard on the Internet (which is my opinion too) can
be found here:

Prison of Self-consciousness:
an Essay on Evangelion
The original English/Japanese texts written by Manabu Tsuribe.

It's very detailed though - but it's interesting to read what a Japanese guy
thought of the series (don't worry - it's written in English ^o^)

PS - you're pretty much on the ball - in that Shinji needs 'others' to
reaffirm his existence or his being in the Human Instrumantality but
he chooses Asuka as the other, or as you said - his "Eve"...

"In my view, The End of Evangelion ended on the phase when Shinji, the hero,
found Asuka as "the other." For Shinji, Asuka is an ambiguous existence. On
the one hand she lectures and inspires him because she minds him, but on the
other she is also an existence beyond his control-the other that can never
be
interiorized. Asuka's ambiguity is also the ambiguity of the work Evangelion
as it is."

Let me know what you think of the essay or drop me an email to

I think the possibility still exists for people to return to physical form
if the simply have the will to do so. Anno left a message of hope, he
left the ending open. Asuka and Shinji are the only ones we actually
see, but the possibility remains for others to live again, to return to
their physical forms.

Is it not essentially a global version of what happened to Shinji in
episode 20 (i think)?

The following was taken from a text I found on the web from the creator of
NGE.

The True Meaning of Evangelion

I've noticed, of late, that there is a growing number of people who believe
Evangelion is, in fact, the Biblical story of Revelations filtered through a
post modern, post apocalyptic, science fiction future. The average fan
understands, with all of his or her heart, that Evangelion is actually a
manifestation of my conscious desire to make an impact on the world, and
that Shinji is my reflection, a forum in which to deal with my own
psychological problems of inadequacy and powerlessness in society. While I
deal with my apparent mental problems, I appear to present numerous themes
and common conflicts, such as man's innate desire to harness nature, a
conflict between creation and creator, a conflict between father and son...
man versus man, man versus himself... Apparently, Evangelion is viewed as a
philosophical and creative masterpiece.

This is wrong.

The true meaning of Evangelion, straight from me, the creator, is as
follows:

Sexual repression and fulfillment.

There is a boy, Shinji. He wants to fuck his mother (Rei), his guardian
(Misato), and his hot redheaded fellow pilot (Uh... Asuka). Throughout the
series, he finds himself unable to do so, a mental block represented by the
fact that he can't even have proper wet dreams. Eventually, lacking sexual
fulfillment, he moves on to briefly experiment with homosexuality (Kouru).
This doesn't work. He's sad, and kills his would-be gay partner in a fit of
intense frustration.

The last episode, where Shinji ends up happy and content, is mistakenly
assumed to coincide with the end of the movie End of Evangelion: not so. In
fact, the entire thirty minutes occur in Shinji's mind around the BEGINNING
of the movie: depressed due to his serious sexual malfunction, Shinji
discovers masturbation, a revelation brought forth by gazing on Asuka's nude
body in a hospital. The moment in episode twenty six where everybody he has
ever known applauds him occurs at the same exact time as that of climax, a
figurative representation of his newfound happiness, fulfillment, and peace
with the world. In the end, it must be understood that Evangelion is NOT
about man's inherent nature, but the fact that one boy cannot get any, and
finally discovers the existence of his hand.

Thank you for your time.

-Hideaki Anno

It appears that you have been taken in by an elaborate hoax. I don't believe
that those are Anno's words at all. Don't trust occidental websites they are
in no way official. Unless you actually have a direct reference to a quote
then don't believe it.

"Evangelion is like a puzzle, you know. Any person can see it and give
his/her own answer. In other words, we're offering viewers to think by
themselves, so that each person can imagine his/her own world. We will never
offer the answers, even in the theatrical version. As for many Evangelion
viewers, they may expect us to provide the 'all-about Eva' manuals, but
there is no such thing. Don't expect to get answers by someone. Don't expect
to be catered to all the time. We all have to find our own answers." Anno

She isn't. Her bandages correspond to the injures she sustained in Eva-02.
Her right arm and left eye are bandaged in line with the damage that was
caused to those areas.

I wasn't taken in by anything, after watching the episodes and the movies
and developing my own ideas of what was going on, finding that on the web
made me kind of mad because it single handedly destroyed what I had seen in
the series. However, if you must know, I wasn't so sure it was authentic,
and whether it is or not, there is A LOT of sexual activity and innuendo
going on in the series, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was originally
the intent.

But it is fanfiction, so why pay any attention to it at all? It was
posted as a joke to the Evangelion Fanfiction Mailing List.

If you want to check out Anno's actual introduction to Evangelion

EH. You didn't read my whole post. Fake or not, it is still interesting. I
said, even if it were fake, the sexual innuendo in the story line wouldn't
surprise me as there was so much of it, but this thread is closed for me
now.

But he did, and it is fake, whether or not the sexual innuendo makes you
think its true, it isn't. Read between the lines.
