I recently got Death & Rebirth and End of Eva on DVD and damn they're
good. Now I want to watch the series, and the Kazaa'd copies I've had
for the last year or so are pretty poor quality (Magma Diver is
particularly good to watch; the whole thing's a red blur! Still, the
fanservice makes up for it. Oops, thermal expansion...) So I want the
DVDs.

I find:

http://www4.cd-wow.com/detail_results_2.php?product_code=4253
Evangelion: The Complete Series. Eight DVDs, £55.99

and:
http://tinyurl.com/qmy5 (Amazon.com)
Evangelion: Perfect Collection. Eight DVDs, $152.98, or about £100

The pictures are identical. Perfect Collection is R1, Complete Series
is R2+4 and is much cheaper. There has to be a catch, right?

So what is it? Right now it's a fierce effort of will not to instantly
order Complete Series. But it seems too good to be true. I mean, the
last couple of Eva DVDs aren't even _out_ in the UK yet AFAIK.

If I remember correctly, the R4 release was also encoded for R2. That would
explain a lot. The R1/R4 editions are identical (Even down to the screen
jitter...)

Go for the CD-WOW edition, as Amazon are a pain in the arse for declaring
the full value of imported DVDs to UK Customs...

I might also add that deepdiscountdvd.com has the R1 DVDs for $100.

What about the Renewal discs? Are those even possible to get stateside?

Well.... yes and no. Yes in that there are several companies
(Animenation comes to mind) and Ebayers who will sell the import to
you (Amazon.co.jp also ships internationally) but, keep in mind, these
Eva:Re discs don't even have English subtitles. And it'll set you back
about $450.

So no, for most of us. And no US company has announced plans to bring
it over for an R1 release. On the other hand, ADV Films will be
bringing us the "special editions" of the last few episodes;
basically, they've added some scenes that were cut from the TV
release. They probably would have released it by now, were it not for
the fact that the English voice actor for Fuyutski seems to have
dropped off the face of the Earth.

That's why I haven't bought my DVD boxset just yet.
