Would anyone like to see Rei Ayanami with her own TV series/OVA?

I'm actually surprised that GAINAX has not already done this,
considering the immense popularity of Ayanami-chan in Japan.

A short series, or perhaps a one-off OVA further exploring Rei's
character would be a guaranteed money-spinner. It could be a retelling
of the events of the Evangelion series from her POV, or a completely
new self-contained story in itself (perhaps occuring at some point
when the focus was elsewhere, such as when Shinji and Asuka were
fighting the aquatic Angel).

Would anyone else be interested in seeing something like this? After
all, one of the main complaints levelled against Eva is that there are
too many times, especially in the first third of the series, when The
Babe Who Whispered 'Hai' At The Heart Of The World (that MUST be the
title of the last ep...) becomes sidelined for the sake of that crass,
vulgar, boring and very predicable German girl.

Needless to say, there would have to be much fanservice... ^_^

Gainax aren't interested in making more Evangelion _anime_ - I don't believe
that Anno works with them any more, which would kind of defeat the point.

There are dating games like Ayanami Project with extra animation based
solely around Rei, though. And I'm sure she'll be in the Shin Seiki
Evangelions PS2 game as well. But honestly, Gainax are milking a cash cow
without having to actually think up anything new in the Eva universe, so why
would they bother with the creative effort of trying to equal their
"meisterwork"?

Nowadays, Gainax seems split between making fluff marketed at a gaming
audience (Puchi Puri Yuushi) or ecchi scifi of various kinds (Mahoromatic,
Konomini (it looked so promising from the logo...what a shame the show
itself looks incredibly generic), (sort-of) Abenobashi), while cashing in
cheaply on the Eva cashcow wherever they can.

Hmmm...

Evangelion Z - Rei goes Super EVA Level 3 to defeat the 19th Angel

EVA: Try - Sorceress Rei and Unit 00 fight for truth and justice against
Shabraningdo, Darkstar, et al.

Magical Girl Ayanami - SEELE's Hate Hate Monsters meet their match in the
cheerful and kawai Pretty Rei. Throw in Ryo Ohki and Chu Chu and you have a
winner of a series!

Revolutionary Girl Ayanami - Duels for the honor of the Rose Groom Shinji
after seeing Asuka slapping him in the watermelon patch.

Ayanami, the Housekeeping Albino - "Master Gendo is sooo goood to me!"
SPLAT!

EVAMon - Ash: "Charizard, I choose you!" Rei: "Ramiel, I choose you.
Particle beam." ZZZAP! "Uh oh, no more Jhoto League..."

If you want to be more inclusive, Rei is already in the Girlfriend of
Steel manga, with a more 'normal' personality to boot. If this manga
does well, GAINAX probably wouldn't mind making an anime out of it, so
long as it sells.

Tho I think people attracted to her for the wrong reasons (the heavy
incorrect fetishization of her quiet/stoic/'submissive' personality,
specifically) won't care much for the new Rei.

Yes, GAINAX ought to make a Rei series, preferably making it as cliche as
possible. It could be like a "robot maid" series, except that the main
character would be less life-like.

This is an absolutely evil concept and I'm suprised no one has

I do 'desire' Asuka - I just don't like her very much... ^_~

Whilst I feel 'desire' for Rei in the conventional way, the sort of
'desire' I feel for Asuka pretty much involves fucking her brains out
then killing and eating her afterwards.

Actually, I don't have to admit it, mainly because it's not true.
There are a few very superficial traits that are similar, but you
might as well say that Naru Narusegawa is very similar to Akane, or
that Nausicaa is very similar to Akane, because they all fight a lot,
and aren't very good cooks. :-P

I'll leave this to LH fen, but I think they'll... disagree.

> GAINAX doesn't really display any of

Wrong again. Consider, for instance, why Asuka throws herself at
Kaji, or why she feels such a driving need to prove herself the best.

> Asuka and Akane share just about every superficial trait they have.

Um, no. If we're being superficial:

* They look nothing alike.
* I don't know that Asuka ever tries to cook
* Asuka isn't promised to anyone; Akane is engaged to Ranma
* Asuka is all over Kaji like white on rice; Akane can on a
very few occasions manage to bring herself to kiss Ranma.
* Asuka is very arrogant and rude to anyone and everyone but Kaji;
Akane is quite nice to most people, even Ranma when he isn't being
a perv or a jerk.

> Blade said they share nothing in common so I just went out to prove him

Your proof could apply to darn near any strong-willed woman in anime,
except those who can cook, and frankly that's not a very defining

I'm not a big fan of the anime myself, but I can't think of one

Well, it might not hurt if you slowed down enough from the excitement
of making a point, and considered if that point was actually correct
or not. The only way I can come up with to say that Asuka and Akane
are even reasonably similar would be so general that it would also
apply to nearly every other strong-willed femal anime character.

In the anime, I'm not sure. But if you look at the manga - which is where
her character is a lot more fleshed out, anyway - there's at least two
occasions where she tried to kiss him. One, near the begining of the
series, when she dared him to (they were interupted), and two near the end
of the series during the "Dou-chan" storyline (again they're interupted, but
she made it really clear that she was ready to kiss him). There are also
the times that she hugs Ranma, even without much of a response on his part,
like at the end of the Herb story.

Really, Akane isn't much like Askua, not when you know anything about her
character. And Takahashi makes a *great* effort to give her character
depth. If you've only seen the anime, that could be why you think her
character matches Asuka on a superficial level, but even then I don't agree.
Asuka is a loudmouthed bitch to *everyone* who crosses her path, save Kaji.
While Akane is almost Kasumi-like in her treatment of most people, it's
mostly Ranma whom she ever gets angry at (and that's because he acts like a
selfish git towards her). And even then, all Ranma has to do is say
something nice to her and she melts into a pile of happy niceness. For that
matter, even when he's being a jerk (towards the end of the series, that
is), Akane attempts to make him understand why she's pissed off at what
he's saying/doing instead of just blowing up. Akane is really a much more
interesting, complex, and beautiful character that Asuka could ever be.

the fan fics I prefer to read generally display Akane in a bad light so I
guess that helps bias me against her.

Ranma earns everything he gets from Akane. The times he's gotten hit for
something he didn't do are readily counterbalanced by all the times he's
weaseled out of something he DID do. And oftimes, he's earned the
hitting through his own boneheaded insensitivty.

Akane isn't an extrovert. She's not particularly hot-headed, angry, or
hung up on her pride, either. Have you ever seen her around anybody
BESIDES Ranma, who deliberately pushes her buttons every chance he gets?

Spare me. Trust me, neither you nor anyone else needs to tell me to
check up on my Ranma 1/2.

Unlike you, who apparently gained all your knowledge of it from shitty
fanfics and the two movies.

It's newbie-huntin' time!

But seriously. Who gets this idea of Akane from anything BUT fanfics?
Holy crap, even in the anime Akane is super-nice 90% of the time. If
someone comes and says Ryouga's an honourless pervert who could never
beat Ranma, and they've only watched the anime, well, fine. There's
counterexamples there too, but you can at least make a case for it. But
Akane The Psychotic Maniac? Only in fanfics, man.

Listen. I don't really care that you're new. It makes it very -funny-
that you told me to watch Ranma, since I am well-known for being the
biggest, most obsessive, most knowledgeable, and most contrary Ranma fan
on this newsgroup, but that's all. You're WRONG, and you don't need an
encyclopedic knowledge of Ranma to prove it.

And might I add that you talking about a crossover fic as your example is
very telling. I expect most of your perception of Akane comes from
fanfics.

No, I don't think anyone needs to admit that. Asuka is about as similar
to Akane as Misato is.

I see it in my minds eye... Big E!

Shinji: OK Norman. Rei, what do you make of it? And why do you insist on

I would be highly amused by the image of Rei hosting an anthology

Also, it'd be entertaining to see a Maho Shoujo or Fighting Show

Frankly, I feel rather bad that in addition for having no real
interest in Ranma, it's spawn an amazing amount of fan misinformation
from people who think nearly every damn stubborn woman in anime is
based on Akane.

Like the Gundam Wing fangirls who read only fics, and are therefore
absolutely convinced that all the Wing Boys are gay. I like writing
fanfic, but, geez, y'know, the ORIGINAL actually has the information
about the real characters in it.

And yes, I found it hysterical she was saying that YOU should "watch
Ranma". Hell, RANMA would be hard put to assert he knows more about
himself than you do.

Much, MUCH better: Rei walks into the room, shoots Gendou in the head,
then herself.

Credits roll, no music because it would be drowned in the wild cheering from

Nah, in any case, a MST show would work best. Just lock her in a movie
theater along with Osaka and Guu, and watch as the Nexus of Surreality and
the Brain Designed by MC Escher turn Rei's brittle mind into so much orange
Fanta.

The clincher is, of course, that the features regularly cause Rei's head to
explode and burst into a shower of pyrotechnics that Mr. Servo would be
proud of.

So... they'd be ignoring Episodes 15 & 16 of Season 4 where Ryoga
obviously defeats Ranma several times, and I'd say the only pervish
thing he does is the few times in the anime he intentionally turns into
P-Chan to get into Akane's bed.

Akane's been traumatized by her Incredible Attraction Field,
which means that males are constantly chasing after her.
Having to pound most of the guys in her school into pulp
on a daily basis to keep them from beating HER, even as
they're shouting "DAI SUKI YO!!!", hasn't helped.

Ranma's actually helping her in this regard by being

Ranma would infuriate a saint...

A thought experiment shows how little Asuka and Akane have
in common. Just imagine...

They switch places.

Akane as the Second Child goes out and fights Angels, while
Asuka is engaged to Ranma and lives in the Tendo dojo.

I can see Akane rapidly becoming Shinji's protector and
main emotional support. Trying to become Rei's friend to
the point of internal injury. Getting along well with
Misato, not so well with Ritsuko, and - given her skill
in sizing people up - not at all with Gendo. In fact,
while Akane may not be a college grad at 14, she's got a
keener mind than Asuka and I suspect she'd pretty soon
start to realize all is not as meets the eye at NERV.
And as stubborn and brave as she is, I think she'd
start digging to find out what's REALLY going on...

Over in the Ranmaverse, meanwhile, I suspect Asuka
would be in a continuous rage. Forcibly engaged to a
'inferior' jock, chased by a moron like Kuno while
the object of her affections, Dr. Tofu, was blind her
her attraction, beset with enemies because of Baka
Ranma: About the only good thing would be that, the
way things go with Takahashi stories, SOMEHOW Ranma
would be able to get through her defenses and heal the
pain that Asuka is so determinately refusing to admit
she's in.

That's a bit harsh... And I think Rei would object.

Asuka just needs to heal a bit. If she's not
carrying around all that hurt, I think she'd be
a nicer person.

Do zombies ever get Kuru? It'd be ironic if this series was the first

excerpts follow:

Mad cow disease, kuru, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease are all diseases
that make the brain degenerate into a spongy mess; they can be
transmitted by contact with infected animal or human tissue.
...
Imagine an astronomer willing to consider that the Earth has two
moons. It was about as heretical for a biologist to consider that
there may be a life form with no genes. But that was what the evidence
indicated, and so, in the best traditions of science, researchers
slogged away for a further 15 years and finally identified the
infectious agent -- a protein, nothing more or less. Scientists
subjected this protein to several more years of the third degree using
enzymes, heat, and all the other techniques that protein detectives
use to interrogate their suspects.

Today, nearly a hundred years after the initial reports, we know what
this protein, called a prion, looks like. We also know that it may
replicate like a virus by borrowing the equipment it needs from the
host. We do not know if this can be called a new life form or not --
that may end up being a debate between scientists and philosophers.

Basically, kuru is a disease first found in cannibals. The active
agent, a protein (specifically called a prion as stated above) is
inactive in the host for whatever reason, but activates in the person
who consumes it. Mad Cow disease shows that cannibalism is no longer
necessary.

And one of the symptoms of kuru (and why it was brought up in
the first place) is that as their brains turn into mush, the
victims are plagued by an involuntary, persistant laugh - the
kind of laugh produced when you've been tickled to the point
of exhaustion, but the tickling continues - that can't be
suppressed or stopped.

And there's a fear that you can get it from medical
"non-cannibalism" such as injecting brain dura matter, or growth
hormone (previously made by indiscriminately grinding up
pituitary glands). Possibly even from blood transfusion; the
donation form asks about any family history of Creutzfeldt-Jakob,
use of beef insulin, and visits to the British Isles.

Touched By An Evangelion:

Rei wanders the city searching for depressed, uncommunicative women with
poetical inner dialogs. Sadly, these women never leave their apartments so
Rei is unable to find anyone more depressed than she is. Cancelled after one
episode.

Changing Ayanamis:

Families return to their homes to discover that Rei Ayanami has been there
and has redecorated with steel panels and a cot . Although "Better Homes and
Rubble" praises her use of the "Tokyo 3 minimalist style", few people seem
to appreciate her accessorizing their homes with clean panties and bloody
bandages.

Cancelled in the first season due to excessive lawsuits

Everybody Loves Rei, Mon:

Actually, no one does, mon.

Law & Ayanami:

Each week a Rei clone is arrested by a pair of Rei clones investigating a
crime. Assistant DA Rei clone presents the case in front of judge Rei clone
and the outcome is decided by a jury of her peer Rei clones. Most cases end
in acquittal because of mistaken identity. Series is in its 15th season.

Suvivor: Ayanami Island:

10 Rei clones are stranded on a deserted island and forced to participate in
meaningless activities to eliminate the contestants one by one. Last
season's climax came when the food ran out and the clones ate each other.

MTV's Rei Rules:

Imagine, an RV filled with Ayanami clones traveling cross country performing
elimination stunts. Since the clones have no personalities or any
intelligence, this is a big winner with the MTV demographic. Watch out for
the Rei clone, she is a bitch.

Queer Eye for the Ayanamai Guy:

A team of Rei clones finds well adjusted, well dressed people and makes-them
over into withdrawn depressives.

CSA:Crime Scene Ayanami:
Each week Rei uses subtle forensic techniques to find the killer of the Rei
clones in the tank. Series seems rather pointless since Dr.Akagai already
confessed.

MTV's Rei World: Tokyo 3:

A group of Rei clones sit around a decrepit but trendy apartment. Sometimes
it almost looks like someone is going to say something. From the produces of
Rei Rules.
