I have to say that the ending was overwhelming and sad but satisfying in a
way.. I nearly cried when Asuka met her end (near death) in the final
battle (I thought she was gone for good the first time watching it,
considering Shinji's anticipation and hope for her in the beginning of End
of Eva.)

I understand that very end has been analyzed to death and most
interpretations are either a repeat or too far fetched. However, I believe
in a more simplistic explaination for the scene of Shinji choking Asuka, who
is bandaged and badly beaten. Through the series, the subtle romance
between those two is often suppressed by their immaturity and unwillingness
to compromise when conflict arises. Shinji didn't realize how much he loved
Asuka until she was comatose as the final battle was approaching; Asuka
didn't realize how much Shinji loved her until the ending where they are
reunited, though Shinji's feeling's were so strong causing him to want to
choke her (but if you look closely, his hands aren't applying any pressure.)
Asuka says "I feel sick" as an honest message to Shinji of how she feels
(who wouldn't feel sick after nearly dying and almost the rest of humanity
around you perishing.) What follows the ending is purely the audience's
imagination but I firmly believe 1) Shinji and Asuka are the "Adam" and
"Eve" and they've finally accepted each other. 2) A very difficult road
lies ahead for both of them. 3) Humanity descended from Shinji and Asuka
will continue to be blanketed by darkness and despair, just like before.

On an unrelated side note, when watching the TV series, I was a little
disappointed after Kaji was shot b/c I kept anticipating Asuka's reaction to
it, considering he was her closest friend but it never showed Asuka's grief
and mourning. In episode 22 or 23, Misato almost gave it away when she said
"Never Again" to Asuka questioning if Kaji was calling her and Asuka seemed
puzzled.

I always thought the "I feel sick" line was a follow up to what Auska said
when she had her period and complained that she didn't need it since she
never intended to have children anyway... If (and I admit it is a big IF)
that is what Anno is having her refer to, I am unsure if it was meant as a
joke - can anyone imagine Auska as the new mother of the new human race?!?

I agree about Kaji's death. One of the consistent elements about the story
was the way the three generations are pictured. The oldest people are
represented by Seele, which in the end is a death cult. The adults in
2014/15 (the second impact generation) are all caught up in lies and
conspiracies (even Misato reveals she is working with Nerv security to spy
on Shinji, Auska, etc.) Leaving the kids' generation out, it is clear that
none of the Second Impact generation know how to tell the truth to each
other, all of them are caught up in lies and deceptions - especially
Misato - no wonder she doesn't tell Auska about Kaji. Also, both Seele and
the second impact generation are pretty ruthless in their treatment of the
children. Is there a single adult in the series who lets morality affect the
way the kids are treated? Misato comes closest, but still keeps pushing
Shinji into the damn entry plug!

I was also disappointed how the Toji story line was never followed up.
Although both Toji and Kinske appear in the TV version of Third Impact, it
is unsatisfying. Like Kaji' death and Auska needed resolution, I think a
scene between Toji and Shinji was also called for.

In Ep 10, Asuka says she already graduated from college yet she still
attends high school with normal people her age.. I don't see why they made
it that way except if Asuka didn't go to school, she'd be staying home
almost the whole time since she's not old enough to have a job (beside
piloting Eva); this would make her character too boring..

Just took another look at the scenes from the "directors cut" (scenes that
Ano added after the original release)...

Auska said, "I feel sick" before E.O.E. This happened first after her
experience with the angel invading her mind, between the first and second
synch tests when her scores fell, She is standing naked in front of the
bath and says, "I dont want to bathe in the same water as Misato and stupid
Shinji. I dont want my clothes to be washed in the same machine as Misato
and stupid Shinji. I dont want to breathe the same air as Misato and stupid
Shinji. I hate them all..." etc.

The next time she says "I feel sick" is on the beach with Shinji after third
impact. Other have noted that in the final scene Auska is wearing Rei's
signature bandages and no longer has blue eyes - the speculation has been
that while she is mostly Auska, she shows some merger with Misato and Rei
which is a result of Human Instrumentality. Whether you accept this or not,
Auska in the new world is still going to be Auska. The "I feel sick line"
was a prelude to her rant against "stupid Shinji" The new world is not going
to be a paradise for Shinji.

I actually think it's just an effect of the coloring of the sky and
everything. The whole bandages thing isn't because of Rei--it's what was
injured in her fight with the production model Eva's.

Shinji wanted to pretend that she was Rei?

I often wonder why we see Shinji was lying on the beach next to Asuka
at the end. He obviously had not just woken up following 3I as he had
taken the time to erect a monument to Misato. I don't imagine that
Shinji would be one to sleep out in the open either...

Umm... the old Adam and Eve Scenario. There is simply no reason to
think that Shinji and Asuka are the only ones to come back.
Everything that is said, shown, or hinted at or implied, without
exception, indicates that everyone can (and, in my view, will) come
back. I've never understood why, after hearing Rei, Kaworu, and Yui
make at least a half dozen direct, unambiguous references to the idea
of people coming back, that, when someone sees two individuals (Shinji
and Asuka) lying alone on a beach, suddenly everything that Rei and
Yui just said about people returning to their human forms, and all
living things having the heart to go on living, suddenly doesn't count
for anything, i.e. everyone else is dead.
Two points: 1) We only see what is going on one beach; I don't think
there is any reason to suppose that there is anything special or
privileged about that particular beach; people might be coming at
other places all over the world. 2) It is a subtle point that a lot
of people miss, but it looks like Shinji is alone on that beach for an
indefinite, but substantial length of time, before Asuka comes back.
The key clue is the grave markers, i.e. the posts that we see sticking
out of the ground, one of which has Misato's cross nailed to it.
Someone put up those posts, and that someone was, of course, Shinji.
A reasonable scenario to explain their presence, would be that Shinji
came back to the real world thinking that he would meet the the others
("Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at
that time were real."). Enough time elapsed without anyone else
coming back, that he eventually gave in to despair, and put up the
grave markers. Note also, that there is a streak of rust on Misato's
cross; another indication that substantial time has gone by. (Here is
a link that describes the alternate, i.e. first draft, endings, in
which it was made clear that the posts were grave markers with the
names of the various characters, including Asuka; it showed her come
up to her maker and kick it over!
http://www.angelfire.com/anime4/mdwigs/livesequence.html
(Scroll down to get to the part about the alternate endings)
From this we can conclude two things: one, what Rei said about people
returning to human form, 'by imagining themselves in their own heart',
is for real; Asuka showing up proves that, and two, coming back isn't
easy, it seems to take a long time. I think that it is entirely
likely, that Misato and the others will come back in due course,
whether that means the the next week, the next month, or the next
five minutes; the point is that they CAN come back...

I've heard it said that the bandages were simply applied by some Nerv medics
or the like after Asuka lost her big battle. As there is no real way to
grasp the movement of time (at least in the 'dream' (for lack of a better
word) scenes), there may have been planty of time for Nerv to rescue, and
bandage Asuka.
Although now that I think about it, I don't think that saving Asuka would
have been everyones top priority considering the whole situation at the
time.

I think that may answer your question....me.

I have the maniscript for the scene talked about on this site (with Asuka
waking up next to Touji, misato in the next apartment, etc).
The title of the manuscript is

'Episode 26' "Sincerely Yours"
New script draft (6th revision, for in-house consideration)'

As I cannot currently remember the site I found it on ^^; , I will post the
url as soon as I can.

You saw her hand and arm being split in half *down the middle*. I
don't think that bandages can fix that.

You are forgetting that the MP Evas had resonated their S2 engines and
a gigantic explosion had engulfed the entire area by that point,
vaporising everything to a depth of several kilometres and exposing
the complete geofront. The remains of Unit-02 and Asuka's entry plug
wouldn't have a chance in Hell of surviving without an AT-Field.

Considering that the MP Eva's lances had the ability to physically
harm the pilot, it's fair to assume that Asuka was dead after Unit-02
was impaled by all nine of them.
